Yay! I was so worried there wasn't going to be a challenge this month. My husband is at Basic Training so I really need something to help the time pass! I am definitely in!

Sorry... I'm a terrible challenge planning slacker. Thankfully JoLene is awesome and has picked up my slack.
THANK YOU, JOLENE!

Thanks Becky --- don't want to take the credit as this idea is coming from Sue.
I think it's a good end of the year challenge. We got the feedback that people are trying to finish up other yearly challenges.

No need to apologize! It is a free service you all are offering out of your own personal awesomeness, so I am appreciative even if it is a little late.
This one doesn't require a lot of pre-planning for the participants; in fact, you will need some "bucks" in your bank to purchase properties, so it might take a week before you really start "rolling" :-D Of course, some of you are speed readers so I shouldn't assume anything ;-)
I think I'll join as well... though I am not sure how much I'll get in. I'm in the middle of moving so... that will be taking a lot of my time.
You know how there is always that one unlucky person in Monopoly that has the worst luck of landing on everyone's high rent spaces? That's me!!! To everyone's amusement, I'm incredibly talented at rolling the number that will cost me the most--again and again and again.
Knowing all this....I'll still play. :-)

It's very good that you're still willing to play, Lori :) I think the way this Monopoly game is going to turn out is that we'll each be playing on our own "gameboard" and the object will be to accumulate "properties" - but we won't have to compete with other players to be the first to land on those certain choice properties - and, no paying rent to other players. Thank goodness!
Quick question: How much of an advantage will HF be in this challenge? I am heading to the library tomorrow and just want to know if I need to genre-focus or not. Thanks!
@Heather, there will be an additional page bonus for reading historical fiction -- but we haven't decided the exact amount.
Sounds good to me!! I'm in the middle of planning my library's Mystery Social, so it may be light participation for me, but I love the challenges!!
I've been wanting to join in on one of the challenges for a while. This one sounds like a great place to start! :)
Just wanted to say that the board and rules look awesome! I am so excited to start reading and earning bucks! The only question I have: how exactly does rent work in terms of owning more than one of a type of property? I read through twice and didn't see anything on it- though it is a LOT of info, so I might have missed it.Thanks so much JoLene!
Shannon, I can't take any credit for this one... I really had no involvement. But it is a great challenge!
JoLene, I do have a question though... well, actually two:
1) Is there a minimum page count required for eligible books? Or do we just read whatever and claim BB per page based on the GR page count?
2) I'm a little confused as to how rent is collected if we're all playing singles. Can you clarify this for me?

Ooops, I went to move the rent section to another place in the rules and forgot to add back in. I have corrected that and it's in the "Book Bucks" section.
When you land on a property you own, you can collect the rent (presumably from the people that are living there ;-). Rent will be 1/2 of the purchase price. If you own all of the properties of those colors, you can collect the rent for all the properties.
@ Becky --- rent is a bit of a liberty since we all are using our own game boards, but we wanted ways to encourage buying the properties.

I have also added a line about minimum page requirements.
For this challenge, we have removed the minimum page requirements and the page bonuses. However, no children's books please.

Cool. I was thinking more along the lines of graphic novels and novellas. :) Thanks!
RE: Rent - so rent is basically just a 50% bonus then, when you land on a space you already own. Got it. :)

This looks like so much fun!! I was looking forward to some fluff reading instead of participating in the challenge... but I can't pass this up! Well done ladies!!
I'm going to give this a try-I read for review constantly, and I just started a review-for-blog book on Oct. 1-plus I always loved Monopoly when I was younger :).
I couldn't remember the Monopoly rules for the railroads so I did just have you collecting 50 BB when you land on it.
I can make the change to the rules.
Do you know the rule for the utilities?

I will go ahead make the change since it's at the beginning and the change hasn't affected anyone yet.

We will be posting the rules soon, but the basic concept is that each participant will have a game board. Each book you read will earn you "bucks" based on the number of pages. You will roll dice to move around the board and use your "bucks" to purchase property. There will also be chances to earn bonus "bucks".
Unfortunately, the rules did not fit into one post, and I didn't reserve room. Here is a link to the rules post.

I will create the game boards by Wednesday, Oct 3.
