@Linda, if more than half of the book is in 1960, than you can claim the HF bonus.....you don't have to count pages or anything.

CassieV Jolene, will The Book Thief work for Opportunity 5? I know the first part starts in 1939, but I'm not sure how quickly the book moves on in time to the 40s. If not that one, I pretty sureWater for Elephants would work...?

Thanks!

Cassie

@Cassie - I'll let you count The Book Thief --- it's an awesome book BTW, I just read it in January.

message 105: by CassieV (new)

CassieV :) Thanks JoLene! I'm very interested in it as I've seen a lot of people give it good reviews.

The Book Thief is one of the best books I've read in a long time, I hope you enjoy it, Cassie!

CassieV Waiting on it to arrive from the library. :) Y'all are making that wait harder!

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) | 3120 comments I read it too and it was very good.

yes, I will.
Also, Orient Express will show up the next time -- it was an error in my spreadsheet :-D

message 110: by Heather (new)

Heather (jjgrl55) I'm confused. I keep seeing posts where people land on Opportunity/Luxury Tax/Jail and they choose to complete a task. In the same turn, they are depositing books which fulfill the task. Are people reading the books ahead of time and "saving" them in case of landing on a task? Cause if so, that is brilliant and I need to start doing it.

message 111: by JoLene, Mistress of the Challenge (new)

JoLene (trvl2mtns) | 1251 comments Mod
Yes, I think that's what they are doing....

message 112: by CassieV (new)

CassieV I'm already working on one task (O.5) and I landed on Luxury tax today. Do I have to pay my taxes in this case or can I do another task at the same time? I'm assuming if I do another task I still have to hold all other books until they're both done...?

message 113: by JoLene, Mistress of the Challenge (new)

JoLene (trvl2mtns) | 1251 comments Mod
Yes, you are correct. You can be working on 2 bonus at the same time, but won't be able to deposit until both are done.

message 114: by CassieV (new)

CassieV Ok, sounds good :). And will you take Persuasion for T.2- someone going from rich to poor?

message 115: by Lori (new)

Lori (glitzyrebel) Hi, JoLene,
I wanted to find out if Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood counted as historical fiction. It is set in Louisiana 1956 and was first published in 1996.

Thanks!
Lori

message 116: by JoLene, Mistress of the Challenge (new)

JoLene (trvl2mtns) | 1251 comments Mod
@CassieV --- I don't think that Persuasion counts because the act of getting richer or poorer does not take place as part of the story but as a background to the story (if I recall well).

@Lori -- yes, YaYa Sisterhood can count -- it's a fun book if I recall.

message 117: by CassieV (new)

CassieV JoLene, I'll keep looking :). I'm going to be reading it soon, so I thought I'd check.

CassieV Jolene, my board is wrong on the score thread. It looks to me like it's a duplicate of Cheryl's which is right below mine.

Through post 446 I own:
14) Mulberry St (post 29)
20) Sunset Blvd (post 63)
27) Blossom St (post 85)
32) Tara Rd. (post 100)
19) Peachtree Rd (post 179)
26) Polar Express Railroad (post 195)
6) The Old Patagonian Express RR (post 258)
16) Howarts Express RR (post 277)
30) Windsor Gardens (post 304)
9) Bluestone Rd. (post 332)
25) Baker St. (post 360)
28) Water for Elephant Works (post 437)

And my BB Balance was 1763

Sorry to add more work to you!

@Cassie -- I missed your post 437, where you bought Water for Elephant works. It should be included when I copy things next weekend. Everything else was correct.

message 120: by CassieV (new)

CassieV Maybe I'm seeing something different...I apologize if I"m wrong, but I'm looking at my participant game board (post 11 on that thread) and it's still has some wrong. Specifically, it says I own Cannery Rd, Main St, Privet Dr, none of which are mine. It's missing Bluestone Rd, Mulberry St, Sunset Blvd, Baker St, Tara Rd, Blossom St, all three of the RRs, Windsor, and Water Works. If you have the information stored elsewhere, then that's great, but I didn't want you to be totally thrown off the next time you check that board. Sorry to be a pest with this!

JoLene (trvl2mtns) | 1251 comments Mod
OK --- there was some errors in the spreadsheet formulas that I use to build the gameboard posts. Can you check again --- I had validated your properties but not the HTML script that generates the post.

Not a pain --- so no worries :-D

Diane, I'm away from my computer so only looking at this on a phone screen. It doesn't look like 50% of the cover is lt blue. The most popular is only for page counts

message 131: by Christy (new)

Christy For Opportunity Bonus Task O.2... can I use the word "street" or does it need to be a synonym? I want to use 44 Scotland Street if it is permitted.

Thanks for all the work you are doing JoLene. And I hope you enjoyed your knitting conference, sounds like so much fun!

ceeeeg | 82 comments O.6) Read a book whose cover features one of the colors of the properties (more than 50% of the cover); the colors are brown, blue, green, red, orange, yellow, purple or light blue. NOTE: please link to cover on this one.

does this title qualify?

The Name of the Rose by Umberto Eco

message 135: by JoLene, Mistress of the Challenge (new)

JoLene (trvl2mtns) | 1251 comments Mod

CassieV Finished The Book Thief, I can really see why you all liked it so much :). Now one more taks to do and then I can (finally!) deposit my books.

JoLene, will you take The Count of Monte Cristo for task T.2?

message 138: by JoLene, Mistress of the Challenge (new)

JoLene (trvl2mtns) | 1251 comments Mod
Yes --- but that's a big book :-D You must be a much faster reader than me!

message 139: by CassieV (last edited Nov 07, 2012 08:57AM) (new)

CassieV Yeah, it's a little daunting, but I've been wanting to read it for a while, plus it fits here and for a slot in another challenge I'm doing. I read the abridged version in high school, but that kinda feels like cheating to this perfectionist ;). I don't know how fast of a reader I am (faster than my husband at least!) but I'm a stay-at-home mom, so I find lots of time to read, even if sometimes the dishes don't get done, haha!

Go for you!! It's one that I've wanted to read as well. I just "retired" on Oct 31 --- but so far, I seem to have less reading time rather than more. Probably because I have to start looking for a job in Jan --- so I have a bazillion "house projects" and holiday presents to make before that!! Not to mention getting caught up on scoring Readopoly!!

message 141: by CassieV (new)

CassieV JoLene, my updated properties score is different than what I had. I have the property value at 2545. Let me know if I've got that wrong! Thanks so much for all the work you're doing!

message 142: by JoLene, Mistress of the Challenge (new)

JoLene (trvl2mtns) | 1251 comments Mod
Hello Cassie,
I checked your property value and I have it at 1545. I think that the issue is with the RR and utilities. You only get to count $50 for each one that you own.

You own 5 RR or utilities so you get $250 for the property value (not 250*5 --- the difference is $1000).

message 143: by CassieV (last edited Nov 13, 2012 07:28AM) (new)

CassieV Okay, so value is 50 for each, I'll change that on my list. So is the rent 50 on those as well, because I thought from what I read it increased by 50 for each you owned? If it's just 50, I need to return some BBs :).

Edit: do the utilities work like the regular blocks when you own them both? For example since I own filbert and cannery I get 60BB instead of 30BB, do the utilities do the same since I own them both?

Thanks for your help with this!

You were counting the utility and RR rents correctly -- they do stack on each other. Since you own 5, you get $250 (5x50) anytime you land on one. I have lumped utilities and RR together so there is no additional bonus for owning both utilities or all 4 RR.

Ellen | 77 comments I think my post #691 was missed in scoring. Please check and adding a new post today. Thanks.

JoLene (trvl2mtns) | 1251 comments Mod
Ellen, I sent you a private message on Nov 17th regarding your post 691. You rolled an 8 and therefore did not land on Eccles, which means that you are not able to collect the rent. You actually landed on space 37 which is Opportunity so you either need to roll the dice OR do a bonus task.

This also means that you for the turn that you just took, you should be on space 4 (not space 2). Please read my message and respond. I can't take any deposits until you decide if you're doing the bonus task.
