Hello!I've just published a novella (adult historical fiction) titled THE WINDS OF MORNING. Though it's the prequel to my Donovan Family Saga, it stands alone as the history of one family in Ireland during the Great Potato Famine and explores their lives and the reasons they immigrate to America.
Here's a bit of a teaser:
1848: the third year the potato crop failed in Ireland. The Protestant landlords have absconded back to Britain, leaving the Catholic peasants to fend for themselves, while the government allowed the export of tens of thousands of tons of Irish food daily.
With two younger brothers to feed, Molly O'Brien took her father's place on the road gang, building a road that runs from her tiny village to the river and no farther. Yet sixteen hours of labor a day would not garner enough wages to even buy bread for her family.
She was beyond despair. Beyond prayer. And so far beyond the tenets of her childhood that she'd decided to offer her body to the first man with the price of a loaf of bread. At that moment, a voice behind her spoke...

The shadow doesn’t have a separate existence from those circumstances, but it’s real. There are stories about ghosts all over the world, different cultures and time periods. Humans are driven to survive, so they create stories about how survival is possible after death. Particularly strong motivations make a more powerful ghost the way a strong light source can cast a long and deep shadow. Ghosts can be nurturing or vengeful, but their cross-culture power flows from the strength of the communal human need to seek survival. Since survival is such a strong and ultimately denied need, it can be preyed upon easily. People want to believe so badly that psychics, con artists, religions and politicians can take advantage - they can tell you they can communicate with ghosts or predict where their afterlife condo is going to be and how to qualify for one or provide an upgrade. Your ancestors need papaya sacrifices to rest easy? Papaya Warehouse Priests can do that in bulk!”
She tilted her head, considering. “How do you sacrifice a papaya?”
“Don’t ask, that’s how they get you.”
