I read 13 (Women of the Otherworld, #13) by Kelley Armstrong by Kelley Armstrong
Finished: 10/15/12
Rating: ★★★★★

My Review:
Impossible to review without spoiling it. I'm sad the series is over but it ended on a good note and the final showdown was good. In this one all of our favorite characters from the series have a role. A lot of the things in previous books I can now see where always leading up to this book.

Iron Kissed (Mercedes Thompson, #3) by Patricia Briggs

Finished: 10/15/12
Rating: ★★★★★

Patricia Briggs is my absolute favourite writer when it comes to werewolves. The way she disects animal behaviour (survival instinct, fight/flight response, dominant and submissive behaviour, etc.) is something I admire in both the Mercy Thompson and the Alpha & Omega book series. I love the characters and the way she portrays relationships. With a lot of werewolf books you get the "fated-to-be-mated" angle which is entertaining enough but these books seem to me to have a lot more substance to them.
I'm not going to go into detail about "Iron Kissed", the third installment, but needless to say, coyotes, werewolves, vampires and fae make for one hell of a ride.
One scene, and those who have read the book probably know which one I mean, always brings me to tears. I like the way Patricia Briggs managed to make Mercy, who is really one of the more tougher women of the UF/PRN world (not as tough as Kate Daniels but then who is), deal with her insecurities.
I'm sort of saving these books to last me until the seventh one comes out next year. :-)

Is the entire series worth reading? I've read "Bitten" and loved it. Clay and Elena are one of my favourite couples. Are the others similar (aka do the women run and the men chase :-)?)

message 355: by Jenne (new)

Jenne (jennetheinstigator) | 1179 comments Yes Jennifer it is definitely worth the read. Bitten was the weakest in the series IMO. All of the female leads are very dominate. Eve and Jamie are my favorites.

Debbie's Spurts (D.A.) | 2179 comments I loathe steampunk and generally don't care for mysteries; but, Soulless keeps getting so recommended to me guess I'll finally bite and checkout the downloaded sample. Maybe it won't be steampunk.

message 357: by Jenne (new)

Jenne (jennetheinstigator) | 1179 comments Its very steam punk Deb.

message 358: by Sandra, Kindle Operator Licence Required (new)

Sandra | 25910 comments Deborah, as the series goes on it gets more steampunk. Soulless is probably the least steampunk of the five books.

Debbie's Spurts (D.A.) | 2179 comments I read the sample and does seem more spoof/parody. I don't think I'll pursue until in a mood for what seems like could be relentless humor. $1.99 for kindle right now so going ahead and downloading.

The Renfield Syndrome (Rhiannon's Law, #2) by J.A. Saare

Completed: 16/10/12
Rating: ★★★★★

"The Renfield Syndrome" picks up right after the massive cliffhanger from the previous book and throws us into a dark and gritty world. As I don't want to spoil the story for anyone, I won't go into too much detail, and just say that I loved it even more than the first instalment.
Rhiannon is still a great narrator and I enjoy her sassy voice guiding us through the story. I loved the main guy in this one, and am hoping to see much more of him in future instalments. Dark, brooding, tortured and sexy. What could you want more?
This time round I was hooked from page 1 and didn't want to put the book down at all.

message 363: by Jenne (new)

Jenne (jennetheinstigator) | 1179 comments Keratin I loved the renfield syndrome! The next one is even better Rhiannon goes all the way crazy in it.

Debbie's Spurts (D.A.) | 2179 comments Looking at your read shelf, maybe a Black Dagger Brotherhood book? (Doesn't sound like you'll be wanting the next one after Soulless in that series)

message 368: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie (Reading is Better With Cupcakes) (imjustcupcake) | 255 comments The last black dagger makes me want to take a break. Maybe book 3 in Strange Angels though. (i think thats the series name anyways)

Which was your last one? I still can't get around to reading "Lover Reborn". I'm just really waiting for Qhuinn and Blay.

Amber (crazyaboutbooks) | 499 comments I've just finished Lover Revealed (Black Dagger Brotherhood, #4) by J.R. Ward and it dragged. Didn't care to much for it, loved all the side characters though. Jealousy (Strange Angels, #3) by Lili St. Crow is the 3rd in that series and I loved all her books till the last one. Happy reading Stephanie with whatever u choose.

Jenne (jennetheinstigator) | 1179 comments I took a peek at your shelf Stephanie if you want something super good you ought to continue on with the Fever series

message 373: by Debbie's Spurts (D.A.) (last edited Oct 18, 2012 09:42AM) (new)

Debbie's Spurts (D.A.) | 2179 comments Fever's really intense, in a good way, so don't know if that translate to a quick read or a fun one. But will definitely suck you in.

I'm ready for new shelf and am in a slump.

I just had Lover Revealed download from library and just returned without reading. I wasn't even in skimming mood 'cause Bruce and Marisa just so woe-is-me. Read Driving Mr. Dead which is too short for BINGO but had some truly silly moments making for a fun quick read right before attempting so that could be part of the problem.

Also trying to get thru some anthologies I got for favorite author contributions (I know better as usually don't care for short stories but thought I could take one at a time). I need a break.

I don't blog so don't get authors asking me to read stuff usually, but, a friend has a new YA Fantasy/paranormal and begged a beta read over my "I loathe most YA objections" — let's just say they captured teenage angst perfectly and at just forced self past halfway point the fantasy/PNR elements not there and desperately want out of the chick's head (actually might sell tho 'cause has teen not in popular circle, loses single parent so goes to live with stranger parent to attend new school with two hot guys [*sniff* smells the love triangle coming], and there is possibly something odd or mysterious...). I'm hoping to get by with some copyediting remarks and just saying "definitely YA; maybe you need to think about what will become the sample readers will download to checkout unfamiliar author." (Translation: this is boring without any PNR/fantasy and nowhere resembles what you promised me had fairytale elements.)

Have some regular SF and lengthy epic fantasy things been wanting to read but have been putting off because will either really suck (particularly if bunch of ethnically mixed characters questing about imaginary author map and not much else to plot or characters just going from one battle to another) or be so good will not want to read Saturday's shelf or anything until not only read but next in series bought and read ...

What to do, what to do...

message 374: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (guinivere87) | 174 comments get out of my head Deborah ;-)

I'm in a slump too. I've started stuff, but can't seem to go on.
Now I've actually started reading slashfiction for TV shows I've never even seen (or heard of). I need help! And a new shelf.

Debbie's Spurts (D.A.) | 2179 comments LOL, me, too. And don't think I'll get the help I need by reading the freebies I need to to complete a challenge.

Debbie's Spurts (D.A.) | 2179 comments Okay, now I know what to do. My meeting-next-Saturday-at-library craft group was asked to donate books for their autumn sale so I'm going thru hardcopies. And skimming thru the ton of cheap or free Halloween and Christmas holiday craft and recipe books I downloaded to ereaders, partly for discussion in another group, Idle Hands - Crafters and Readers at http://www.goodreads.com/group/show/6...

Neither of which really reading exactly; but, should get me out of my slump and at least do something good.

Debbie's Spurts (D.A.) | 2179 comments *sigh* I knew better but I had to go and read something off my freebie pile that was truly awful.

Amber (crazyaboutbooks) | 499 comments Oh NO sorry to hear that Deborah. What was it?

message 379: by Debbie's Spurts (D.A.) (last edited Oct 18, 2012 10:34PM) (new)

Debbie's Spurts (D.A.) | 2179 comments The sucked so bad did not finish was a chicklit one Dating Games - sounded like would be a light, funny read (or at worst too formula) but read like author randomly threw in some vulgar moments (as in perfectly ordinary office girls (chick lit cariety so daydream a lot and fashion obsessed) suddenly go out to a bar, do lines of coke for which they owe stranger sex) -- and I do not mean that to sound like it's erotica. Writing overall was meh , and seemed like jumped back and forth between three different thngs: trope chicklit drooling over designer labels, waxing on and on about what great bff's she had in her little clique (possibly author's homage to real girlsfriends the way that read), and oddly sandwiched in bits of vulgar things. Actually vulgar bits (I am warped, I know) more interesting except they just really jarringly showed up in the ordinary parts. Maybe beta readers told author those sections were boring and needed to be spiced up or something. Way too many characters followed about too. Had really great reviews....

Jennifer (guinivere87) | 174 comments I just caught my Gran reading "Fifty Shades of Grey". She did try to hide it behind an edition of Good Houskeeping but I snuck up on her.

Haha. She only wanted to know "what all the fuss was about" :-D

Debbie's Spurts (D.A.) | 2179 comments Jennifer wrote: "...Haha. She only wanted to know "what all the fuss was about..."

Likely those of us over 40 don't get the fuss/hype as we've read better and worse both in terms of the writing and in the amount of BDSM. Definitely a love it or hate it reaction to series for most readers.

To be fair, well, here we are talking about it again. And it truly is a rabid example about the power of social sites/media (including goodreads).

I was confused into thinking it was a paranormal/UF book as I initially missed all the hype when I tried to read (even initially missed all the fanfiction tie in stuff as I don't normally pay attention to that either). Then when I tried to read it immediately reminded me of every heroine and style of writing I loathed in the 1970s. It was just unoriginal and uninteresting to me so I've never finished. I did not care for the writing style at all.

And now the book ads that are springing up touting themselves as the next to read after Fifty Shades...think that's sticking around for a while like all the "if you are a fan of Tolkien" fantasy genre ads.

message 383: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (guinivere87) | 174 comments I know. It's completely crazy. Those books are everywhere. The local Tescos (supermarket) has an entire wall stacked with Fifty Shades books. At least a hundred of them.
It's like E.L.James invented BDSM. :-D Erotica has been around for a lot longer than that.
I've only read the first one so far. I really don't mind stalkerish behaviour in a hero but come on. I don't know, maybe I will read on maybe I won't.

LMAO! I read all 3 but Christian didn't sweep me off my feet like he did everyone else. I like an alpha male and the arrogant quality but he was too much of a control freak IMO.

Soulless (Parasol Protectorate, #1) by Gail Carriger

Finished 10/18/12
★★★

It was ok. Some parts were a tad bit boring. Other bits I found myself a little lost. Lord Akeldama was by far my favorite character. The science talk kept my interest the best. Will I read the rest, maybe at some point, but they arent on the top of my list.

Kerstin | 862 comments @Jennifer, I loved the Aisling Grey series. Those books were a lot of fun. Hope you enjoy it!

@Deborah, I read Under Wraps a while ago, and remember it was a quick read with one of the most clueless heroines I've come across!

@Jenne, Magic Strikes is still my favourite book of the series.

But finally to my own shelf choice. I'll read The Ripple Effect (Rhiannon's Law, #3) by J.A. Saare , as this series seems to be my current addiction. I was hoping it would fit for this weeks shelf.
