Kick-Ass-Heroine Shelf
Magic Bites by Ilona Andrews
Finished: September 16, 2012
Rating: ★★★★✩ 3½ stars.
Number of pages: 280
Review: A book that definitely fit the shelf "kick-ass heroine." Original world building that could have had the origins fleshed out more. Characters that are clearly going to be able to carry on the series I am planning to read more of. I would have starred higher but really could have used either more story and less kick-ass heroine in endless showdowns to show how kick-ass she was or less story because figured out things quicker with fewer injuries—it was rather long getting to the point although a fast-paced, action-packed type of read. Overall, I did like it. I did avoid reading reviews beforehand but had heard so much about this book in various groups' discussions and goodreads' updates and how is such a favorite series for most posters that I think I was prejudiced into expecting more.

(I've had my fill, particularly if also involves a lot of teenage angst or feels it has to be the trope YA trilogy where book 1=one + possible guy, book 2 = the second guy, and book 3 = get rid of one guy and keep the other...particularly tired of book 3 either twisting the guy author wants to get rid of into some completely unrecognizable character, usually villainous, or kills off in some tearjerking and/or self-sacrificing for heroine scene).
I know, the formula makes money (and often blockbuster movies) but I am just on a bit of a rant and certainly not wanting to read more.

Got it -- but what an icky cover!

For a FREE/self published novel, I really enjoyed Prince of Wolves. Though it had it's grammar and dialog flaws,The story concept easily swept me away. Will continue to read on to see whats to come next.
WARNING: I rate higher than most because any story is better than none at all. just saying :)
Soul mates, intended, betrothed, destined--call it what you may; I prefer shotgun romance. Throw all elements of the real world out the window. Jacque falls in love, discovers she is part werewolf, and gets involved in a battle-to-the-death ritual all in one week. Geez, I wish my weeks could be that exciting. Disregarding the fact that the book takes place over the course of one week, I fell in love with the characters' personalities. Jacque's girlfriends are hysterical sassy ladies who, despite needing some lessons in class, keep everyone light on their toes and add necessary touches of humor. I LOVED the possessive traits that Fane can't help but exhibit when it comes to his mate. He doesn't want another man to be the center of Jacque's attention and he isn't afraid to let her know it. He is all alpha-male and all the good things about a man wrapped up in one amazing package.

It's pretty good so far. It mentions all of these little no name towns in East Texas near me. I thought it was kind of funny/weird you don't usually hear about them in the books I read. I'm hoping to have it done tonight.

Will try my hardest to check in and hope that what I have on my nook will cover what gets called. Oh not leaving till friday LOL. Very happy to be getting out!!!

Free Space (selected from SOS group bookshelf)
Kitty and the Dead Man's Hand by Carrie Vaughn
Finished: September 17, 2012
Rating: ★★★★✩
Number of pages: 282
Review: This is becoming my go-to series for challenges like BINGO because always a quick, enjoyable read with very likable character. I really enjoyed this book start to finish.
If you have not read previous books, there are some spoilers ahead. In this 5th entry in the Kitty Norville series, the action picks up after the marriage proposal ending of Kitty and the Silver Bullet.
Kitty's cancer-recovering Mom wanting the big wedding with plenty of sick/recovering-mom guilt pressure. Of course, Ben and Kitty are thinking City Hall--particularly after pricing all the big wedding items like photographer (somehow Kitty did not care for Ben's suggestion that a friend do--said friend being the police department's crime scene photographer). The package deals at Las Vegas sounded easier to still give Mom some sort of bigger wedding, then Kitty's station boss thought of a live TV show from Vegas (working during your wedding weekend ... hmmm), the Master Vampire of her city has an errand to his friend the Master Vampire of Las Vegas ... and they are off joined by Kitty's parents.
Of course the station has her booked into same hotel as a gun convention with a lot of Cormac's werewolf hunting friends ... and just all kinds of craziness throughout the rest of the book like you'd expect from a Kitty book. No Cormac although mentioned; a couple of new female characters in the usual testosterone ooze about Kitty.
I had a few "red flag"/doubt moments before completely into swing of book. First few pages were a bit too sweet to read as a Kitty book (all the rose colored glasses approach to the wedding stuff and how uber wonderful Ben was), a creep scene where someone thought Kitty might actually miss being an abused submissive (did not turn into that 50-over-hyped-thing but worried me very briefly), ... all passed with further reading so the book rated a solid 4 stars for me. It ended on a note I may or may not like depending on next book. (view spoiler) ["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>

The Kitty books tend to be fun, quick reads for me. And Saturday morning's usually my only tightly scheduled time (this time of year a big part of my workload is just monitoring servers and other equipment and so long as nothing goes wrong, I can read or stitch or whatever). I keep a couple of series that I read the next one to get the "taste" of a bad book out of my head; Kitty is one.

I enjoyed the book. I found it to be a bit slow in the beginning, making it a little hard to get into. It did pick up eventually. There were a lot of plot twists and turns throughout. At some points there were so many it was hard to keep track of things and characters. The relationship between Four and Tris makes me want to yell at Roth. I feel she needs to work on their chemistry a bit more. I will not believe in the chemistry of characters if you have to tell me every time Tris thinks of Four how beautiful he is and how amazing and wonderful and how she couldn't live with out him. It gets really annoyin really fast.
I do plan on reading the next one whenever that one comes around =)

I did not see it on the bookshelf; did not manually look in all the new release threads but plugging into "search discussion" it did not show up. (smart phoning it; when back at real keyboard and easier screen tomorrow can look at threads if no one else helps in the meantime).

Shelf: Kick Ass Heroine
Completed: 19/9/12
Rating: ★★★★
Rhiannon is a snarky young woman, who can see the dead. She hasn't delved deep into her ability, but when Disco, a local vampire, comes to her for help in order to solve the gruesome murder of a bunch of fellow vampires, Rhiannon has to learn fast.
This was a fast and exciting read and a good start to a series. The story took a little while to really take off for me, and I thought the first quarter of the book was very slow, but once I got into it, I couldn't put the book down.
I really liked Rhiannon. She was sassy, always had a comeback and could look after herself. That said, she was also very vulnerable due to an abusive past. The rest of the characters made for an interesting read too, especially her two main partners in crime(-fighting) Disco and Ethan, a fellow necromancer.
Be aware that the book ends in a massive cliffhanger, but one that is actually really, really good and makes me look forward to start book #2 very soon.

Shelf: Kick-ass heroine
Read: 19/9/2012
Rating: ★★★☆☆
Avry of Kazan our heroine, is the last surviving healer in a realm ruled by various rivaling fractions. As a healer she has to hide her powers because her kind are blamed for a plague which killed a big percentage of the population.
Now Avery has been on the run for three years and is finally caught by Kerrick who wants her to heal Prince Ryne the ruler he swore allegiance to from the plague.
I liked it, but I didn't love it. For me "Touch of Power" lacked world building and without the map I'd have been seriously lost because Avery and her band of brothers seemed to be hopping all over the place in the four months the book takes place.
I liked her as a heroine but compared to Yelena from the Poison Study series I couldn't really connect with her. What I did like about Avry (apart from her name, which is great) is that she is very good at what she does and she can use her healing power in self-defense. The love interest was slow developed and works very well for the two protagonists as they have to overcome mistrust and misunderstandings. Kerrick isn't just your usual hardened warrior, he is a forest mage and for me this power gives him a softer edge which he seriously need because for about 70% of the book he's a bit of a jerk.
One minor thing. When I read fantasy which takes place in a sort of medieval realm I don't really like reading words and phrases like: mojo, hey you guys and see you later sister.

Here's my review:
4.25 A strong start for this trilogy. This is not the pretty vampire books that are so common. I highly enjoyed it and will read the rest of the trilogy for sure! This book takes place in my home state so it instantly claimed a soft spot in my heart ☺.
Amiliya wakes up in a grave in the forest with no memory of how she got there. She was turned by a professor she had coffee with. He is called the Summoner and is feared and elusive throughout the vampire community because he is also a necromancer. When he changed Amiliya some of his powers over the dead transferred to her. Amiliya has had a rough relationship with her family and has never really fit in anywhere. Turns out she fits in perfectly in her new vampire life. She travels to Austin to try and find another of her kind to show her the ropes. In Austin she meets Cian the master of the city. He is engaged to a human and trying to be more human than vamp. But Amiliya brings out the vamp in him. There's no doubt the two are very attracted to one another but can Cian ditch Samantha for Amiliya? Cian was also turned by the Summoner and informs Amiliya that he likes to play with his fledgelings then kill them. Cian has worked hard to avoid him but now with Amiliya in his life he'll go after the two of them. Can Cian and Amiliya stop the Summoner and work out things between them?

Great Job Team 3!

Last round, my team was first to get stamped also. Then took forever to get any shelves lined up (other teams had four in a row before we had two in a row even with free space completed and being caught up well before each shelf call), then zip had lots of 4 in a rows and still lost...maybe the luckiest thing is to just be assigned to Judithe's team, LOL.

No, no, no--we need Mr. Randomizer to call Urban Fantasy, YA Paranormal and Favorite Series for the diagonal with free-space and kick-ass heroine!

I actually had a Murphy's Law popup book that got wore out three times at the office that had lots of hilarious cartoons and rules. Almost as fun as the Stress-ercises book I had with goodies like sitting in a wheeled computer chair with the paper you are bending to pickup stuck under the wheels...

@Jennifer -- I really liked Touch of Power (read for YA paranormal last time but it honestly is not YA); only problem I had is that the next book in series is not being published soon enough :)
