post-apocalyptic is a good one, I didn't see it mentioned. I love dystopian and zombie too. Some zombie books are pretty darn funny and others just darn good (Mira Grant's trilogy Newsflesh comes to mind (another pseudonym for seanan mcguire)

But still adding it again here! :D
I like the way erotica shows on the list as needing to have an alternative choice. Maybe the alternative could be a personal shelf choice for "Inter-racial romance (human/supernatural)"? Should still get some raunchy choices in there. Hmmm..."raunchy"...might be another good alternative shelf, as in a personal shelf for PNR/UF with raunchy characters or plotlines. Might actually get some incubi/succubi things into that one (not enough of those for a distinctive shelf but would surely count as either erotica or raunchy for most of the succubus books).(I thought about I married a _____ category like Heinlein's "I married a Martian" quote but realized would be slim pickings with so few UF/PNR featuring marriages or even weddings.)
Erotica/Raunchy looks like a good stamp name.
Maybe 'sexy' (8,211 books) or 'hot' (10,239 books) shelf as alternative for erotica shelf? This way there is a mix of pnr and erotica books to choose from...
Dragana wrote: "Maybe 'sexy' (8,211 books) or 'hot' (10,239 books) shelf as alternative for erotica shelf? This way there is a mix of pnr and erotica books to choose from..."I like that shelf idea for use as erotica plus alternative!
Some people don't like any sex at all in their books and so anything: erotica/raunchy/hot/sexy will turn some players away. I know you can't please everyone but that would probably be a deal breaker to more potential players than othe shelves. I don't like zombie books but since this is a paranormal game, I expect to possibly have to read a zombie book.
But some people get really upset over sex of any kind in their books. Although I don't really get how people who would read zombie, vampire etc.., would be offended by sex but that's just me.
I don't personally like straight erotica with no story; I'm not sure there's a whole lot of pnr/uf group read things (possible exception a very few of the YA ones or the characters that-would-if-they-could-but-love-life-sucks ones) that are completely clean of sex. So I am fine with having erotica provided there's an alternative shelf offered as well. The name, even with an alternative shelf, could be offensive though.
Maybe shelf stamp on card should say the less objective alternate shelf name and shelf announcement state "alternate shelf" and "erotica" shelf choices.
(Puh-Lease, not, no way no how, please not a shelf labeled "mommy porn")

Mira Grant's Newsflesh Trilogy, despite having zombies, also doesn't really have a lot of zombie appearances or feeding or horror scenes in it.

Are you suggesting two separate GR shelves on the same square?
Maybe a personal shelf called "Anything Goes" (as long as it's 200 pages) or "Pick Your Heat Level" would be broad enough for those who want to read steamier books that aren't usually found on the GR shelves, and not scare off those who prefer the door closed.
In the end, they are just other ways of saying "Reader's Choice". And we have that already.
Just that the original suggestion list back towards the beginning of this thread wording said "erotica" plus an alternate shelf. I was just suggesting that if it offended anyone or prevented someone from playing to put alternate shelf on the bingo card instead of "erotica"—not that big a deal since no one sees Bingo cards until round starts (and hopefully if something objectionable players would just back put before their teams counted on them)....not that the alternate shelf would repeat reader's choice; just that card have the less objectionable term shown.
Okay. I think I unfogged myself. I went back in the thread to when Kat first mentioned the shelf. And the way Judithe added it to the list.I checked Dragana's suggestion of "sexy" and it brought up the usual suspects: the Black Dagger Brotherhood, Night Huntress, Pys-Changeling, Sookie, Anita Blake....heck, even Magic Bites was on the list and NOTHING happens it that book! So, obviously, different users defined "sexy" differently.
"Hot" --- turned up many of the same series as above on the first page alone. Again, "hot" meant different things to different people.
One person's warm is another person's 3-alarm fire, I guess.
I think they would work as alternates to "erotic" or "erotica"
What about alpha hero? It has over 4,000 and has all of the different series we love and hold dear. But with a little more contemporary romance and historical romance thrown in.
That's one we have used in the past or maybe it was alpha male. But, definitely one that's ready for a do-over b/c I don't think it ever got called.
Just to be a devil's advocate, maybe a banned book shelf or a never going to read shelf? I'd be curious to see what turns up on those.
banned = 5,000+ books http://www.goodreads.com/shelf/show/b...will-never-read = 7,000+ books http://www.goodreads.com/shelf/show/w...
Judithe wrote: "Hmmm...that's almost wicked!"It is, isn't it? There are probably some surprising books on those shelves and they would most likely cater to all tastes.
Hmmm...have already read over half of page 1 of banned (and currently have one checked out...why was The Golden Compass banned???) Personally doable shelf...will-never-read looks a bit harder, but Dark Lover is on there (huh. Like BDB, maybe the slang, or wife-beaters did those 3 readers in) Certainly looks like a challenge!
I think the Golden Compass was banned for being anti-Christian. Books can be banned for odd reasons. I thikn even the Cat and the Hat has been banned and other childrens books for having talking animals.

I never understood the Golden Compass, despite the fictional church-state, being banned as un-Christian where others with wicked/false priests/ministers were not even if belonging to an explicit Christian denomination. Guess someone read "daemons" as meaning demons possessing people or as visible souls that were being taken from people. As a kid I just thought daemons were neat either in a Dr. Doolittle or in a bonded-to like Timmy and Lassie way.
I do see only slightly about Cat In The Hat because has kids letting stranger into house and things go on completely against adult rules...some of the themes and satires Seuss threw into his rhyming childrens books really just would not be noticed by most kids.
I'm not even sure book banners read whole books. No patience with the groups that see sexual meanings like any rounded illustration is representing a female body part and anything tallish without straight edges a male body part. Dirty minds see what they want I guess. And, dating myself, backwards playing albums with devil messages...I never saw how, unless you were playing backwards, that would even register in your brain.

Funny you should mention the "negative" shelves. I had toyed with the idea of listing abandoned or unfinished or never-finished
The default shelf is pretty broad. ;-)
Judithe wrote: "will-never-read looks a bit harder, b..."That's one of the tags for books written by author's who...well...did not react well to negative opinions of their work. (Trying for the diplomatic approach).
It could be a difficult shelf for people --- though I'd say some of the books on the list are also there because readers have no interest in the books (Harry Potter, Twilight, Dan Brown, etc).
Updated to add: I just came across Sookie Stackhouse books and the BDB...)
Christina (AKA Babbling) wrote: "Funny you should mention the "negative" shelves. I had toyed with the idea of listing abandoned or unfinished or never-finished"The shelf name I use for unfinished books is gave-up-on (41 739 books).
I thought to complain how books from these type of shelves will be tough to read, but there are a lot of series that I read and enjoyed on this shelves. Like: A Song of Ice and Fire, His Dark Materials, The Hunger Games, The Infernal Devices, Harry Potter, Graceling Realm, ...
That's what's so cool about those shelves. The things one person hates, another person could love. There's something for everyone on those lists.
Ladies, thank you all for your comments and suggestions! Many, many ideas of intriguing ways to tweak future shelves to keep SOS BSB lively, fresh and fun. We'll be considering (and are already lightly debating) future possibilities based on our Bingo parameters and previous member feedback. We will be tailoring ideas in hopes of creating a fun, positive game for all! Now, all ya need to do is hope Mr. R favors your team, and stockpile books to cover anything you need!
We'll be closing the thread for now...(go read! I'm pretty sure all of you haven't finished BOTH your free space and Week 1 books~as of last check this a.m.!)... and thank you again!
BTW, will be doing some more editing of Post #1 to reflect the later comments in a bit!
Also, if there is a shelf you desperately want to add, mention it in the current bingo discussion thread~Thanks!
