message 51: by Judithe, Soap Operas never end.... (new)

Judithe | 6566 comments Just poked around...

Though people didn't actually seem to follow the color distinction much...(and all genres...found at least a few of mine on the 1st pages, too)
Black: 7,073
Red: 5,156
Green: 6,313 (not such a good choice, but great if you want "green" ideas)
Yellow: 3,374
Purple: 2,058
Blue: 5,552

Debbie's Spurts (D.A.) | 2179 comments I've only run across one shelf/challenge thing I definitely would NOT like to see ... reading a book exactly x number of pages. Did not like that one in another group and wound up instead of wasting days trying to find in my books and TBR pile just picking same as another player (then told had to be unique, then ditched the individual challenge).

Sometimes can reach too far trying for something new; so do like staying in vein of uf, pnr, etc.

Judithe | 6566 comments Yuck...agree on "not like" of that!

message 55: by Debbie's Spurts (D.A.) (last edited Sep 09, 2012 07:34AM) (new)

Debbie's Spurts (D.A.) | 2179 comments Maybe a personal shelf choice for "other" as in uncommon/other paranormal power or supernatural being.

As in some being that's a supernatural or has a power/magic/ability not in category of fae/fairy, elf, witch/wizard, vampire, werewolf/shifter, ghost, grim-reaper/angel-of-death, angel, psychic, medium, demon, or god/goddess. Would have to specify what the uniqueness was in the brief review. Okay if common supernaturals in the worldbuilding or as secondary characters. But, main character has to be different.

Could add to list of supes excluded if wanted.

message 56: by Judithe, Soap Operas never end.... (new)

Judithe | 6566 comments That could be a workable idea for the supes that have "small" shelves...will tinker with it! Thanks!

Valerie ~ Val Hall ~ | 9662 comments I wonder if there is a shelf for non 'white' hero/heroine. I just lack the word for it. You know..with Asian, Mexican, African descent. I do not want to seem racist or anything but sometimes hero in those books have beliefs or behaviors that adds something to the book.

Valerie ~ Val Hall ~ | 9662 comments Many of the UF books feature a detective/private eye:
Detective: 31,665 books
Private eye: 1,439 books

Non-caucasian?

message 60: by Sandra, Kindle Operator Licence Required (new)

Sandra | 25914 comments Inter-racial is pretty close, and there are shelves, cause I did a link to them in one of the mini challenges this month.

message 61: by Judithe, Soap Operas never end.... (new)

Judithe | 6566 comments There's also a "people of color" shelf...

message 62: by Debbie's Spurts (D.A.) (last edited Sep 09, 2012 05:20PM) (new)

Debbie's Spurts (D.A.) | 2179 comments Ethnic? (inter-racial might lead more towards romance/relationship type of books) although guess that itself is open to interpretation depending on what ethnicity you are.

Maybe a personal choice vs. shelf. The "ethnic" shelves are not lending themselves a great deal towards fiction much less pnr or uf.

Valerie ~ Val Hall ~ | 9662 comments I guess all of the above...
I know I am narrow minded but one book that really got to me was The Fox Woman by Kij Johnson , a retelling of a Japanese or Chinese myth...really something.

message 64: by Debbie's Spurts (D.A.) (last edited Sep 09, 2012 05:35PM) (new)

Debbie's Spurts (D.A.) | 2179 comments I doublechecked and ethnic background not in the meta data questions I saw. But I'm not sure I'm that knowledgable on metadata stuff (help menus not real helpful on the subject).

I guess if making it a personal choice for this group will need to specify a real race earthling - no counting a werewolf or gargoyle as a non-caucasian because a seperate race.

Possibly a rule of thumb for that stamp choice that it feature non-caucasian lead characters or lead character encountering racial problems by being in racial minority in book's worldbuilding.

Or a myth or fairytale based story that's not a part of western folklore (guess that's the term to mean not the greco-roman, celtic, brothers grimm stuff-none of the European or American tall tale things either)

message 65: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 2484 comments "soul mates" of course. I didn't think to look up that one and it's so obvious.

I meant to say when I commented on the "freebie" one that it would have to include library books for those without ereaders and not just be freebie ebooks.

Debbie's Spurts (D.A.) | 2179 comments I think books where the supernaturals come out to the public or law enforcement and other agencies suddenly have to deal with the reality of the paranormal are interesting reads (well, when done well).

Not sure what shelf name to look for (don't think "coming out" would net the right genres)

Japanese! Had to check out (and TBR!) the book...checked out the author, too. She does a lot with Japanese myth, so looking forward to reading some of her versions! Thanks for that share!

message 87: by Daffodil (new)

Daffodil (daffodil--ripcranberry) | 2098 comments Not sure what it says about me, but I had to create a shelf labeled Assassin. LOL.

I'm not the only one though. There are 1944 books on the assassin shelf and 3138 books on assassins. PNR and UF on both.

message 88: by Vivian (new)

Vivian (_vivian) | 1934 comments Ooh, assassin is a good one! Some great series about assassins :)

I agree, some of my favorites have assassins as main characters. :)

message 90: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 2484 comments I have a paranormal book with Assassin in the title. Assassin's Heart (Order of the Sicari, #2) by Monica Burns

the whole series is well about assassin's.

erotica might be something to consider as well

message 99: by Sandra, Kindle Operator Licence Required (new)

Sandra | 25914 comments Erotica suits me, but that sort of category could be alienating to some members. Gotta think of everyone :)

Valerie ~ Val Hall ~ | 9662 comments True...and most of the erotica has less than 200 pages.
