Cat | 160 comments We used to have a picture book that had and evil Rabbit, or Hare, in it. It was scary to me as a 10 year old and I want to know if it dtill is. Would have been published in the '80's.
The rabbit had big scary, sharp teeth.

Catherine, are you still looking for this? Any idea if the book was American, British, Australian, other?

message 7: by Railyn (new)

Railyn (funky-rat) | 243 comments Bunnicula had a whole series.

These were two that DIDN'T have Bunnicula in the name:

The Celery Stalks at Midnight
Nighty-Nightmare

Bunnicula is not a picture book. That on top of the OP saying it was not Bunnicula.

message 9: by Railyn (new)

Railyn (funky-rat) | 243 comments I missed the "picture book" aspect of it, but I was simply under the impression that the OP was talking only about the original Bunnicula book and not any of the follow-up ones.

Sophie (notemily) | 477 comments Sorry, I missed the "not Bunnicula" part, ha!

message 11: by Tab (new)

Tab (tabbrown) | 5084 comments The Magic Hare? I don't know if this really fits.

Do you remember if the illustrations were realistic, cartoony, bright, etc?

What else happened in the book? Was the bunny haunting a house? Was he a pet? Was it more a humorous tale of a scary rabbit?

message 12: by Cat (new)

Cat | 160 comments Hello,
Thanks for trying everyone. I greatly appreciate it. The pictures, I think, we're kind of cartoony but really scary. It was a very scary story and not very humorous.

message 13: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl (cherylllr) You'll have better luck jogging someone's memory if you come back and 'bump' this thread every month or two. Consider this your free bump for January, and come back sometime in Feb. with anything else you remember, or just type 'bump' as a comment.

Amanda (misterfive) | 215 comments The animated film of Watership Down had some pretty scary rabbits in it--stills from the movie did get made into a picture book. Maybe it was that? Here's one version of it with the scary rabbit on the front: The Watership Down Film Picture Book The Watership Down Film Picture Book by Richard Adams

Splitting hairs, I know, but technically Bunnicula has been a picture book. Specifically a series of like 3 with the header "Bunnicula's Pals... Harold & Chester In...!" illustrated by Leslie Morrill.

The Fright Before Christmas (Bunnicula and Friends, #5) by James Howe is the one I owned. Sorry OP since I know you've said it's not Bunnicula, but in case another searcher finds this info helpful I wanted to post it.

The evil rabbit or hare - was it in a house? In the wild? Was it killing humans, working magic, or possessed? Do you think it was part of a series, or a standalone?

Sorry for taking so long to reply.
This isn't the book. The rabbit/hare was in the wild. There is definitely a picture of him leaning against a tree but I'm not sure if it is the cover or not. Pretty sure it was a standalone.

Mr. Rabbit and the Lovely Present has a rabbit I found very creepy, but he's not meant to be in the story. Illustrations by Maurice Sendak.

Was the rabbit humanized in any way, with clothing, speech, etc.? Were there any humans in the story? Other rabbits in the story? What were the other characters?

message 23: by Cat (new)

Cat | 160 comments I believe the rabbit had clothes.
No human I can remember. I think all the characters were anthropomorphic animals.

Not this story, but that cover made me go "ohhh". I think the colour scheme looks right, but I looked at other pictures from this book and its not the right one. Thank you for trying though.

Could it possibly be some picture book made based on the movie Watership Down, which is also, of course, derived from the book Watership Down? There are evil rabbits in the book. I'm visualizing a Disney version of the movie with the scary parts moderated for young readers.

I will check out some. Thank you for the suggestion.

S | 1 comments Here’s another bump as I’m looking for maybe the same book. My husband can remember a book like this that had a rabbit that ate people or something like that. He thinks it was human-sized. He was like 6-7 and it was a book on tape so he can only vaguely remember cover art, says it was a rabbit standing over a person.

That 'standing over a person' bit is really ringing a bell with me. Very glad to know that I avent totally /made up the book!

Carly Gartner | 2 comments I remember this book! It was a picture book at my primary school in the early 90s. The rabbit had sharp pointy fangs - I remember the illustrations were stark, the colours muted, it was a strange book. Been trying to find out the name of this book for years.
