Shiny! I was channel surfing last year, and came upon a few minutes of the Serenity movie. I thought they were interesting characters, had a great plot, and had great visuals. Fortunately, Hulu had all the episodes up at the time and I caught up on the series. I get a kick out of Nathan Fillion's hidden Firefly references on Castle.
There are quite a few of them, Elizabeth. We've listed some of them in this thread:
Nathan Fillion in Castle New Show on ABC.

Every single week I was right there in front of my TV to watch it... right up until the night they showed episode 10 instead of 9, then started mixing the episodes up, changing the times it was on TV, changing the nights it was on, and then even screwing with my Tivo by saying it was going to be on at the usual time and I went to watch the episode and it was frickin' Prison Break.
I think my heart broke a little that day and I've never forgiven FOX. They ruined Firefly, Dark Angel, Dollhouse, and The Sarah Connor Chronicles.
Still, I think I felt really proud when I signed the Save Firefly petition, and even though it didn't come back on the air... we got the Serenity movie. It was like a victory for all sci-fi nerd kind.
Welcome to the group, Harper! Wow, I wish I would have watched Firefly from the beginning. Not sure where I was or what I was doing then. But at least I did find it later and fall immediately in love!
I'm not sure I never got to see it on tv cause it never came to australia but I am with you Harper FOX is evil!!!!! I just wish they could have kept making it but they choose to keep all the really bad shows instead!
I started watching when it was first aired and fell in love with the show on the very first episode even with the whole timeline mess up. I remember getting addicted to the opening song and singing it all weekend long. ( it is now my ringtone) I was so confused when the bad people cancelled it. I couldn't believe that a show this great could be cancelled like that and kept looking through the tv guides trying to find the new timeslot that I was sure it had to have been moved to. It took me weeks before I came to the painfull realization that the greatest show ever made had been cancelled. I was so angry that I didn't watch that station for years. And to this day I still don't watch it very often. When I saw it on dvd I snatched up in less than a second. I was so angry when I saw that there were entire episode that were never aired. I still watch the entire seris every couple of months. My husband told me that he fell in love with me the moment I introduced him to Firefly and he wants to name our daughter River and our son Mal.
Hey everybody. The science channel is doing a firefly marathon on July 4th 2011 starting at 8 am and ending at. 1 am july 5th eastern time. All of the. Shows in order and then repeats of "the Train Job", "Bushwhacked", and "Shindig". Just thought you would like to know. Happy fourth everybody.
Awsome group! I was living in China and Brendan an Aussie friend of mine introduced me to the dvd. I was hooked.
I saw watched it from the beginning - or rather the next-to-the-beginning since "Train Job" aired first. I was already a Whedon fan so, although a Western in space seemed like a strange series idea, I was willing to give it a try. I fell in love with it when the characters started swearing in Chinese. I also knew it was too quirky and good to last, so I started taping the episodes. Never though it would get to DVD and I'm so glad I was wrong on that point! I've got two sets of DVDs now: one for me and two to lend. Just hooked another friend on the series this month. I love watching Castle to catch the nods to Firefly.
I thought a "western in space" seemed like a strange idea, too, Dorothy. :) I really should have trusted Joss!
I was fortunate enough to find the box set of "Firefly" for sale and took a chance on it(being familiar with Joss Whedon's work). So very pleased that I did. Character dirven stories with action and humour, pathos and panche. I understand why network suits wouldn't understand or appreciate. I also own the movie "Serenity" which fulfills some of my desire for more.
I discovered Firefly from Netflix and fell in love and then just hated the fact when I found out it was only one season. So then I watched the movie Serenity and then well that wasn't enough either. So then I heard and found out about the books. I can't wait to read them. Just have had a hard time finding them. One day they will be in my hand and I will read them. I'm now very excited to have found this group.
I didn't know that there were graphic novels out there. I'll be keeping my eyes open for them, Thanks.
I finally posted my review of The Shepherd's Tale. As with the other Firefly graphic novels, my overwhelming thought is that it isn't as good as watching it on TV, but better than nothing.
I watched from the start, had all the episodes on our Tivo until an unfortunate lightning strike (fried the hard drive, but our house didn't burn down). Now I have them on dvd but still fall into watching them when SciFi has a marathon.
i was a fan of buffy and angel but missed watching firefly when it aired...when serenity came out, i remembered that it had to do with the cancelled series and decided to watch it...immediately after watching the movie, i got the dvds and have been a fan ever since - so much so that i've given away about a dozen sets of firefly dvds and about 4 or 5 copies of serenity to friends to introduce them to this great show
I'm another one who never saw the show on TV. A friend and co-worker recommended it to me and I found the DVDs on sale so bought it. I loved the series and especially the characters. I also enjoyed the comradirie among the actors. Of course I was there on opening night when Serenity the movie came out. I still try to keep track of the actors and follow their new series. I especially enjoy Castle.

Me too, John. It's not the same as Firefly but still a great show to watch.

I found a copy of Serenity on the shelves, probably at wal-Mart. It looked cool so I bought it, and watched it and thought it was great. But I didn't have time to watch the extras so I didn't even know it came from a series. Months later, my son saw it on the shelf and asked about it. I told him to watch it as it was very cool and he'd like it. He did - watch it and like it. But he also watched the extras and learned that it came from a series called Firefly. After much begging on his part, I broke down and bought the series. We've been browncoats ever since. Best Damn series ever.
Interesting, Arok! Not the typical way most people find Firefly, but in the end it only matters that you did.
I didn't know about Firefly until it was off the air. I had a friend who had a "which character are you?" on their Myspace page and I watched Serenity because the cover looked cool.
Here's a YouTube link to Firefly references in Castle: (first few seasons though) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uQsnLN...
Hi I'm Rick and it might take some explaining to tell the tale of how I discovered Firefly. You see, it began in December of 2003 when my friend James didn't get the newly released Firefly
on DVD. His father had asked him "What should I get you for Christmas?" and James replied the DVD set of that show Firefly. Seems simple enough, right? Well it wasn't. Come Christmas what does James get from his father? A Star Trek necktie. Now how anyone could mistake a i>Star Trek necktie for a box set of Firefly I have no idea. But what does all this half to do with me?
Well, you see, I knew that I was going to hear no end to this when James didn't get Firefly on DVD. So I went right out, bought him a set and gave it to him. That should have been the end of it - nope. James insisted that I had to watch the damn thing with him since I bought it for him. So come January 2004 we started watching it. I was hooked by the end of the second episode. After the third I went out and bought my own set of the box set. By the time James and I finished watching his set, I starting getting other friends to watch it and I gave away my set to another friend. So I had to go out and buy another set for myself, which I them gave away to ANOTHER friend and I went out and bought a fourth set.
So far everyone I've show the series has fallen in love it. I did have one friend who said she didn't like it, but I found out about a year later that she went back and watched her boyfriend's set (no I didn't buy him his copy) and ended up loving it.
Firefly: BEST SHOW EVER!

My family has always watched TV series together on DVD - my dad got Firefly for us to watch a few years ago and I haven't stopped watching it since. :) (Not literally of course).
I first wastched Firefly when it came out on DVD. My friend was really excited by her new purchase and decided to share it with me. Am so glad she did as instantly fell in love with the whole world and characters. Have recently lent a friend my own copy of the series to watch for the first time and it's great to see it still gaining fans so long after its premature end.
Sorry I've been gone so long! Loved all the new stories of how people first discovered Firefly! And welcome to all the new members.
well, a long time ago we watched Serenity, and me and my brothers really liked it, but nobody else did. Then finally just recently we started watching them.
I was never a big television viewer. I went to a friend's house one day, and he said he had this show he wanted me to see. This was after Firefly had been cancelled. He popped in a VHS tape, (the DVDs hadn't been released yet) and played the pilot episode, Serenity. I don't remember much about it other than the scene where Mal shot Dobson at the end. We were talking and kind of sketching in out sketchbooks while the episode was playing. It was mostly just background noise.Cut to a year or so later. I go to that same friend's house. He pops in a DVD and says, "I think you'll like this". This time, he showed me Out of Gas. It grabbed my attention. After that, we watched Shindig and I fell in love with Kaylee. Then, War Stories. That was all we watched, but I was hooked. After I left his house, I went straight to the store and bought the DVDs. I watched the entire set that week.
I've loved the show since.
I didn't see this show on TV either and I actually found out about this show after I started watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel and the Avengers. After I heard so many good reviews about this show, I just had to buy it on DVD and I really enjoyed this show!! To be honest though, I actually bought Serenity first before I bought Firefly, but it's been years since I've last seen Serenity and at the time, I didn't have any interest in the movie. Now, I'm thinking about watching Serenity again!
I got to see "Serenity" in a local theatre last night. It was the first movie picked for the chain's Most Requested Movies which they'll be showing once a month. Since I was too busy organising our local Can't Stop The Serenity event in the spring to see it then, it was lovely to see it on a large screen with a theatre full of fans.

The CSTS is going to be in Pittsburgh! September 29th at the comicon in monroeville! OMG I can't wait!!!
I found out through my son-in-law a couple years ago.Never cared much for Buffy (though loved the movie of the same name."You threw a knife at my head").Tried to watch Angel but couldn't. When my son-in-law mentioned Firefly,I had asked ,Isn't with the spaceship flying over the cows?(I had seen promos for it on the Sci-fi channel)watched a few ep. then bought the season set on disc.
i found out from my sister's ex. He was a really great guy and got me into magic too. Without him I would have thought the 2 hr. long pilot was the movie!
I watched it on tv when originally broadcast. It was not what I expected but I enjoyed it tremendously. The dialog is the best part for me. I really related to the characters right away. It was shame it didn't make it. The movie was also good.
I found it on the Science Channel, although I did know about it when it was originally airing. I was working nights back then, and would have had to tape it. Now I kind of wish I had.

I watched this on TV when it came out. My daughter and I use to watch it in her room, as my husband was opposed to allowing me to watch anything done by Joss Whedon in the family room. My daughter and I were so bummed when it went off the air. Boo!
When Firefly came out on DVD, I pounced on it! The kids and I were watching it together one day and my husband walks into the room and starts watching. We were on the second episode and he says, 'Um, am I walking into the middle of this show? What is it?' Our jaws dropped. I said, 'We just started watching. Would you like to watch it from the beginning?' He said, yes. When he asked what it was, I told him how he'd turned down the opportunity to watch it when it first came out and he said he thought it'd be like Buffy, which it is not!
We have family Firefly marathons about 2-3 times a year, always with the Serenity movie afterwards. My husband still can't believe that the show was canceled!
There have been comic books based on the show, and I think they've done a wonderful job with the characters. Right now, "Leaves on the Wind" series is out, which is a continuation of the characters after Serenity.
