Cheryl | 1171 comments How about Burning Chrome by William Gibson? I haven't read it yet. It's a short story collection, so I don't know if it qualifies. I saw it marked as To Be Read on Sarah's feed and wondered if it would be a good nomination for the group.

message 202: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (sarahmott) | 467 comments Here here! Supposed to be a classic

Adelaide Blair | 1321 comments Mod
Sure!

message 204: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl | 1171 comments Are we skipping Gorky Park for November?

message 205: by Adelaide (new)

Adelaide Blair | 1321 comments Mod
No. I just forgot.

For some reason, if I don't update the day before a new month, the new book goes into this weird limbo where it doesn't show up anymore and I have to find it.

Yeah, that's why I posted. It only showed the October and December books on the group's homepage. Thanks for fixing it!

message 208: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (sarahmott) | 467 comments How about Devil with a Blue Dress? Also, is Gone with the Wind on the scoreboard?

message 209: by Adelaide (new)

Adelaide Blair | 1321 comments Mod
Gone with the Wind is January's read. I will add Devil to the list!

message 210: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl | 1171 comments I haven't read anything by Robert A. Heinlein. I see that Adelaide and Sarah have read some books by this author. I'm willing to read anything you'd put on the list by him, if you want to pick a title. (I'll check my library's catalog, but it seems like they have most of his books.)

message 211: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (sarahmott) | 467 comments Man - there's so much of his stuff I'd still like to read. Time Enough for Love is up there. So is The Moon is a Harsh Mistress and Have Spaceship- will travel.

message 212: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl | 1171 comments Is it Have Spacesuit - Will Travel ? If yes, then my library has all 3. I am open to reading any of them.

message 213: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (sarahmott) | 467 comments I vote for Have Spaceship

message 214: by Adelaide (new)

Adelaide Blair | 1321 comments Mod
I added it for April!

message 215: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl | 1171 comments I'd like to nominate Marjorie Morningstar by Herman Wouk

Three of my Goodreads friends gave this book a 3 star or higher rating, so I thought it might be worth reading. From the description, it sounds like it's in the same category as The Group.

I wish I could come up with some books by female writers to nominate. I want something fun, but the only one that comes to mind is Jackie Collins. I've never read her books, but she had a reputation for Trash with a capital T. I'm afraid to nominate anything she wrote, in case it's unreadably bad trash.

message 216: by Adelaide (new)

Adelaide Blair | 1321 comments Mod
I have no problem with bad trash as long as it is fun.

Cheryl | 1171 comments Adelaide wrote: "I have no problem with bad trash as long as it is fun."

Let me do some more research on Jackie Collins before I nominate something by her. I don't want to read another dud.

message 218: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl | 1171 comments Ok, this one looks like a fun read:

Hollywood Wives by Jackie Collins

It was written in 1983, so it fits the group requirements. It looks a bit similar to Valley of the Dolls, which was fun to read.

message 219: by Adelaide (new)

Adelaide Blair | 1321 comments Mod
I'm down for it.

message 220: by Cheryl (last edited Jan 28, 2018 05:42PM) (new)

Cheryl | 1171 comments I just saw The Blue Sword is the group read scheduled for May. It looks like a good one! I really like books with a desert setting, too. I need to expand my Fantasy reading, and this one looks intriguing.

It’s a fun one!

message 222: by Cheryl (last edited Feb 15, 2018 11:47AM) (new)

Cheryl | 1171 comments This is a question for Sarah, really.

Do you think anything by Mary Renault would be good to nominate?

https://www.goodreads.com/author/show...

I ask, because you seem to know alot about ancient Greek and Roman times and have read a few books set during that time. These were written years ago (I remember my mother reading them when I was young) and would fit the publishing date requirements for a nomination.

message 223: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (sarahmott) | 467 comments Oooh - I haven’t read any of the Alexander books or the Theseus books. Both look good!

Cheryl | 1171 comments Sarah wrote: "Oooh - I haven’t read any of the Alexander books or the Theseus books. Both look good!"

Sarah,

It's up to you if you want to pick one to nominate. If Adelaide says it goes on the list, I will read any one.

I can get it from my library. It's up to Adelaide now.

Adelaide Blair | 1321 comments Mod
SURE! On the list!

message 228: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (sarahmott) | 467 comments Have we done Treasure Island yet? I haven't read it and everyone says it is rad...

message 229: by Adelaide (new)

Adelaide Blair | 1321 comments Mod
On the list! Classic adventure trash!

message 230: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl | 1171 comments I just looked at the updated list of upcoming reads for the group. Ring is the pick for October! I have seen and liked the American version of the movie, and have wanted to read it. My library has it, so I will definitely be reading this.

Sarah wrote: "How about Madame Bovary? Moooooooooooo"

That's a literary classic, so it doesn't really qualify. But I have a copy I've been meaning to read, so I'll read it with you outside the club if you want. Pick a month!

Sarah (sarahmott) | 467 comments Okey Dokey

Cheryl | 1171 comments I'd like to nominate Audrey Rose by Frank De Felitta
I remember this being popular in the late 1970s, but I never read it.

message 236: by Kathy (new)

Kathy | 1 comments Good choice. I remember reading it but can't remember a thing about it. Time for a re-read!

message 237: by Adelaide (new)

Adelaide Blair | 1321 comments Mod
Will do. I think I read it a million years ago, but I don’t remember it at all.

Sarah (sarahmott) | 467 comments It’s time for cheesy sci fi! How about The Puppetmasters? Any alien invasion story that takes place in Iowa is probably true.

We have already done The Puppet Masters in Nov of 2012! It was our 3rd book and I gave it 2 stars.

Ha! Nice try, Donald.

I just picked up a paperback of Rogue Moon by Algis Budrys at the Goodwill store. Would this fit your cheesy sci fi category? And can everyone find a copy from their libraries?

I cannot get this one from the library, but I can get Who? by the same author. What about you all?

Sarah (sarahmott) | 467 comments Sounds great!

Wow, I had to really look through my library's catalog to find this one, but they do have Who? as part of a five novel omnibus. Ok, I can join in this read!

message 247: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl | 1171 comments I see Blood Meridian is coming up for the November read. I keep hearing how good it is, but I'll need you guys to help me get through all the violence.

Well, good thing we decided not to read Rogue Moon. It was terrible! My review is here: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

Now I don't know if you want to add Who? to the schedule. It did get better reviews, but I won't be offended if you decide to scrap it.

message 250: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl | 1171 comments Here's one that might be good:

Goat Song by Frank Yerby

Just take a look at the book description:
"ARISTON THE SPARTAN: LOVER, WARRIOR, PASSIONATE ADVENTURER
Conceived in brutal lust, Ariston was both blessed and cursed with a beauty that brought suffering and death to everyone he loved. Proud women fought with harlots for his embraces. Men followed him blindly where he led. But Ariston was himself slave to an imperious destiny, driven relentlessly toward a gate few men would dare to face...

This is the story of a man who rises from a boyhood in the perfumed brothels of Greece to become one of the greatest warrior heroes of the ancient world."
