Suggestions for Future Group Reads
Adelaide wrote: "Ahhh, you don't have to do that. I'm sure I can get a used copy. I can certainly afford it, but I'm ideologically opposed to paying $19 for a 30 year old book. That seems crazy to me."The publisher probably turned vulture after David Bowie's death. They figure his fans would pay anything to read it, since he had been in the film version of that book.
How about Colossus by D.F. Jones, it was turned into the film Colossus: The Forbin Project starring Eric Braeden: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0064177/?...

I'm in Seattle which has a great city library system. I know that interlibrary loans have costs associated with them, but $5 seems pretty steep. I can buy a used book for that amount. I have a pretty large book budget, but I donate most of it to the library, so I can share. I'll add The Hunger book to the list. It will be perfect for October.

I live in Kennewick and the Mid-Columbia Library System only charges $2. If it was much higher I would end up buying more used.
So I don't think we've done a romance yet and, don't laugh, I've actually never read one before. I saw this one on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Sweet-Savage-L... It was a New York Times Best Seller so it can't be bad, right? HAR HAR HAR.

The upcoming reading schedule looks good, Adelaide. The Spy Who Came In From the Cold is a book I've wanted to read, but was intimidated by it. I'm so glad I'll get to read it in a group setting. That way, if I'm confused by something in the book you guys can help explain it to me. (Spy novels can get very convoluted - for me, anyway.)
How about a Sherlock Holmes book? Hounds of Baskerville would be cool read or a Moriarti book. I've never even read one!
Sarah wrote: "How about a Sherlock Holmes book? Hounds of Baskerville would be cool read or a Moriarti book. I've never even read one!"I've already read The Hound of the Baskerville (it's good), but that is the only Sherlock Holmes book I have read. I think most of the Holmes stuff is short stories, but there's alot of it on Project Gutenberg for free. I'd be willing to read anything else featuring Sherlock Holmes.
Here's a gritty crime nomination from the 1940s: Nightmare Alley. I saw the movie starring Tyrone Power and I liked it alot.
How about the Man in the High Castle? The Netflix series looks cool. And I actually like Phillip Dick. Even though he is weird and a little hard to read sometimes.
Sarah - I found Man in the High Castle his most easy to read book. Nothing like Ubik at all. Haven't watched the series though.

Adelaide,I just looked at the upcoming list of groups reads. They are awesome! Great job moderating the group. I've found so many great books here.

What a coincidence! I was going to suggest Get Shorty as a future nomination, but just saw it on the future reads list for July. I had seen (and liked) the film, and wanted to read the book. Funny how it worked out like that.
Are we still discussing Planet of the Apes this month(April), or did you decide not to? I ask because the group's home page does not show it any more.
After the month end, goodreads puts the upcoming book in some kind of weird limbo. I usually update on the last day of the month, but I totally forgot while I was in Portland. Sorry!
Adelaide wrote: "I was at a board game convention and forgot to update the page!"I hope you had fun. I'm starting to hear more and more about board game groups. Sounds interesting!
I'd like to nominate What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? by Henry Farrell. I've seen the film, but never read the book.

Are you watching Feud on FX? It's really good.

Adelaide wrote: " Are you watching Feud on FX? It's really good."Bette and Joan? No, I haven't seen it. I'll look for it on my cable provider's On Demand.

It is wonderful. The best thing I have seen on tv in years. (As an old movie buff, I am partial to the subject matter though.)

Adelaide wrote: " Are you watching Feud on FX? It's really good."I binge watched Feud on my cable's On Demand (up to ep. 6). You are right - it is so good! The writing, the acting - everything is top notch.
I see on the group's bookshelf that The Elementals by Michael McDowell is scheduled for October. It looks interesting. Had you read this one before, Adelaide? It's not yet available at my library system, but I see it's been recently rereleased so it might yet be purchased by the library. If not, I see both Amazon and Barnes & Noble have it.
I have not read it or anything by that author. I was looking for something a little different for October. Let me know if your library doesn't get it and I can change it though. Do they have a form where you can request they buy it?
Adelaide wrote: "I have not read it or anything by that author. I was looking for something a little different for October. Let me know if your library doesn't get it and I can change it though. Do they have a form..."Oh, I will see if I can request the library buy it. To buy online (various places) it costs $14 -$15 (only the large size paperback exists) and it's less than $10 in ebook format. I will soon be travelling until the beginning of July. When I get back, I'll see if my local used book store can get it. I'll let you know if I can get it then.
Well, it looks like the only way for me to get a copy of The Elementals is to buy it. No library copy (nor will they buy it) and no inexpensive used copy. Maybe I will wait and see what the group thinks of it in October before I buy it. I've been having bad luck with buying books and I end up not liking them.
I can't figure out how to do this from my phone, so I will change it when I get back home next week.
Adelaide wrote: "I can't figure out how to do this from my phone, so I will change it when I get back home next week."Ok, Adelaide. The only books by Michael McDowell I can get are the first three books of his Blackwater series. They are described on Goodreads as Southern Gothic, so not really horror and won't work for October.
Adelaide,I see you picked Anno Dracula for October, instead. This definitely works for me, as my local library branch has it. Victorian alternate-history horror - I love it!
Sarah wrote: "How about Gone with the Wind?"Great nomination, Sarah! I live in the Atlanta area (but I'm a yankee transplant) and I've never read this book. (It's almost blaspemous that I haven't.) Of course there are plenty of copies at my library, so I will be joining in.
I have never read a book by Sidney Sheldon. This one seems to be pretty popular, and thus has a better chance of being found in a library:The Other Side of Midnight
It got decent reviews on Goodreads, too, so it might be worthy of a nomination.
