Suggestions for Future Group Reads
I just saw The Daughter of Time is on the discussion schedule for January. So many of my Goodreads friends gave it 4 or 5 stars. I can't wait to read it!
Sarah wrote: "How about the Stepford Wives?"My library has it, and I'd be willing to read it. (In fact, I think I did read it many, many years ago.)
I love Ira Levin, so Stepford Wives is in.
I also love Westerns, just not the Man Who Loved Liberty Valance. My husband and I both hated that movie. (Which is really funny because the same director did Stagecoach which I LOVE.)

OK, I'll keep thinking about the Westerns. So many of those films were based on short stories, not novels. Anyone else have any suggestions for a Western novel?
Here's an interesting Western I found:Down the Long Hills by Louis L'Amour

It won the 1968 Spur Award (Western Writers of America) for best novel.
I wasn't sure where to post this. I saw on Turner Classic Movies that Psycho (our group read for October) will be shown on the big screen at select movie theaters Sept. 20 and 23. Here's a link to Fathom Events, where you can type in your zip code to find a participating theater near you:http://www.fathomevents.com/
I've never watched that movie at a theater. There are 2 places near me that will be showing it. Maybe I'll go see it.
Adelaide wrote: "Hmmm. I think I'm going to go!"Here's a link to a TCM blog article on the film version of Psycho, specifically examinining the directing of the "parlor scene". I thought it was interesting to read, especially if you are going to see the film.

I read on a friend's blog about a SF book from 1970 called Downward to the Earth by Robert Silverberg. Here's a link to the blog post:http://tinyurl.com/qhfgqd8
My library has it, so I will be reading it at some point. Maybe it could work as a nomination for this group?
Here's a spy novel that might be campy fun:Modesty Blaise by Peter O'Donnell

Lots of 4 star reviews there (if that means anything). I can get it from my library's interlibrary loan program.
Ooo- can we read Adam's Fall by Sean Desmond? I saw the movie, Abandon, with Katie Holmes and it was totally dope.
Sarah wrote: "Ooo- can we read Adam's Fall by Sean Desmond? I saw the movie, Abandon, with Katie Holmes and it was totally dope."That was published in 2000. Is that too recent for the group?
Technically it is a little young, but since we are the only ones who regularly participate, we can bend the rules every now and then. (I try to use 20+ years old to = "classic" but almost 16 is pretty close if you guys are down for it.)

I nominate Dragonwyck by Anya Seton. It's a gothic novel that was made into a pretty good film in the 1940s. (Starring Gene Tierney and Vincent Price.)Here's the Goodreads link:

Will do! If you nominate a sensation novel you have not read yet, I'll also add it to the list!

Adelaide wrote: "Will do! If you nominate a sensation novel you have not read yet, I'll also add it to the list"How about Armadale by Wilkie Collins? It's a more famous one, so libraries should have it. I know Project Gutenberg has it in a variety of ebook formats. It is a long book, like 700 pages. Maybe we could extend it for more than a month, if that would be better? If it's too long, I could pick something else.
Adelaide wrote: "Naw, it's perfect. I've been wanting to read it for awhile."Great! I've heard alot of great things about the book.
Yay! Six Days of the Condor is scheduled for May. I saw it at my library today and was itching to read it. Soon ...
Here's a nomination:Bedelia by Vera Caspary
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2...
I haven't read it, but the author also wrote Laura, from which the film was made. Bedelia is a femme fatale type of book, and looks like a good fit for Classic Trash - if everyone can find a copy at their library.
It was $1.99 as an ebook at Amazon, so I just bought it. I was thinking of adding Laura soon but we can do this one instead.

Let me know if you want me to hold off on the nominations for awhile.)
Nominate away! I just add things from the list whenever. I just try to vary the genres so we aren't reading too many of the same things at once.
Have we already read the Maltese Falcon? I could use me some good old hard boiled fiction right now...
Both Sarah and I added The Big Time to our Want To Read lists, and Cheryl has expressed and interest in it as well, so I'm going to add it to our list as our September read.

How about The Hunger by Whitley Striber? Cheryl likes it too, it has vampires, and David Bowie stars in the movie so how can we go wrong?
Sarah wrote: "How about The Hunger by Whitley Striber? Cheryl likes it too, it has vampires, and David Bowie stars in the movie so how can we go wrong?"I second this nomination. I wanted to read something by this author, and I liked the movie.
I am not sure if I can get it. My library doesn't have it and the kindle edition is $19??!!!! WTF. If I can find a reasonable priced edition, I will add it to the list.
Ahhh, you don't have to do that. I'm sure I can get a used copy. I can certainly afford it, but I'm ideologically opposed to paying $19 for a 30 year old book. That seems crazy to me.

Just wondering - do you want to stay away from nominating Westerns in the future? I don't mind. I just want to get a better idea of what the group wants to read.
