Your Last Read.
I agree with you, Beth. liked the Lewis trilogy because the things I look for were there. The characters were believable, the plot moved along, maintaining suspense, and it had the atmosphere to give the books a sense of place.I've tried some of the others didn't have all of those characteristics.I also would like to give some books s 3 1/2.that would say others might enjoy the read and a 2 1/2 (ho, hum...).
Recently finished a very entertaining golden age detective story,
Seven Dead by J. Jefferson Farjeon and republished by Poisoned Pen Press. My review can be read at https://sandysbookaday.wordpress.com/... or https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

The Pact by S.E. Lynes blew my socks off! My spoiler free review can be found at https://www.goodreads.com/review/show... and on my blog sandysbookaday.wordpress.com https://sandysbookaday.wordpress.com/...
Friday was publishing day for my first 5-star read of the year,
Dead Ernest by Frances Garrood. This is a poignant, moving and, at times, very funny look at love, marriage and family life. You can read an excerpt and my review at https://www.goodreads.com/review/show... or https://sandysbookaday.wordpress.com/...
Returned to another author I haven't looked at for a long while -
It was alright - but I always get the feeling PD James was a bit of a snob - is that just me? It puts me off. I must try some new authors for a change!
Just finished reading a gripping debut crime thriller
The Murder List by Chris Merritt My spoiler free review can be found at https://www.goodreads.com/review/show... orhttps://sandysbookaday.wordpress.com/...

About to start
After Nightfall by A.J. Banner after finishing
Sins of the Fathers: A Family Mystery Set in Scotland and England by Anthea Fraser My spoiler free review can be found at https://www.goodreads.com/review/show... and on my blog sandysbookaday.wordpress.com https://sandysbookaday.wordpress.com/...
Just finished Snap , and the only disappointment is that it's over. The main character, 14-year-old Jack Bright, is utterly compelling, and it's a rather different turn on the thriller-mystery genre for a book to focus on the family of the victim rather than on the detectives and killer.
I just finished Raven Black by Ann Cleeves. My first book by this author. I enjoyed it. https://novelmeals.wordpress.com/2018...
I'm just getting started on the Shetland series so I have many books to look forward to. I will probably try another of her series, something with Vera in the title. Lovely setting.
Coffin RoadThis was a great read, especially because I am a beekeeper, as was the main character. The book involved the plight of three scientists working to prove the negative impact of neonicotinoids on bees (a real issue for today's beekeepers). One scientist ends up dead and one with amnesia. Part of the book around the main character is written in first person and the rest of the story is in third person. I loved the description of the Scottish islands and the ferocity of the weather!
I am currently reading Hide and Seek. Hide and Seek This is 2nd in the Rebus series. I just recently started these and I don't know why I didn't read them before. Enjoying the book. After this I plan on reading this month's main group read.
Just finished
, for my real-life book club. It's not marketed as a mystery, but there's a bit of one in it. I was so immersed in it Monday morning, I not only got on the wrong train, I went an extra stop before I realised that the train wasn't going where I was going.

Looking forward to it. I'm glad to hear it's so good that you were to immersed to know train stop had come up! That's total concentration!
Just finished '
by Stephen Booth. I really like his books, especially as I live in the area he writes about, and he has an accurate and detailed knowledge of it. I do think his main characters get a bit tired as the series goes on, though. Perhaps a new series in the same area?
I finsihed Lethal White by Galbraith/Rowling. Love this series. Planning on getting to the October book Perfect Remains. Late but I had issues here :-(https://novelmeals.wordpress.com/2018...

So glad you enjoyed this Sandy. It’s on my kindle too. Very excited to read it, but must read others with closer publishing dates first........😉
Classic murder mystery for fans of Agatha Christie or Anthony Horowitz' "Magpie Murders".

Beth wrote: "Sandy. I just looked at that one! Came up on amazon recommendations"Great read, Beth. Really atmospheric & a good mystery to chew on.
David wrote: "Beth wrote: "Sandy. I just looked at that one! Came up on amazon recommendations"And it's my nomination for Value Read for April!"
Excellent choice, David. I'll be following that thread.
A Murder of CrowsThis was a dreadful book, although the author is an excellent writer. The storm scenes and landscape descriptions are excellent but the story itself is disjointed over 71 or so sections! Far too many stop and starts to make a fluid story and the tale itself is very dark.
The book is full of descriptions of failed interpersonal relationships; within the detective team, between Jack Russel and his wife, the son and father, the pedophile and his victim, … on and on. Its quite a depressing read and its difficult to like any of them (except for poor Alice, suffering from Alzheimers). Oh and by the way there was a murder, but it is certainly overshadowed by the dysfunction of every character in the story
there is a hint at the end of the next book .... I won't be reading it, though.
Several good ones lately: The Bottle of Tears , A Patient Fury , Quieter Than Killing and totally off-topic, Sing, Unburied, Sing .The first is a family mystery rather than a police procedural - not usually my choice, but with characterisation this good, it was hard not to get wrapped up in it. There aren't any odd eccentrics here - this is the sort of family you might meet in real life.
Characterisation also drew me in to the second, probably because I've had bosses like Sadler. This one kept me guessing right up to the end.
I'm still reading Quieter than Killing, but hoping for a long wait for the train, as I'm nearing the end. Another one with a lot of possibilities (and some very interesting criminals).
Sing Unburied Sing was a read for my real-life book club. There are some ghosts haunting this African-American family in the Mississippi Delta, but the horror is in the real experiences, both of Pop in the 1950s and the family today. There are no words for what happened at Parchman prison - we think of the lynchings and other terrors of the segregated South, but but this is something I did not know. It makes me wonder what else has been filed away as historical trivia.

Should be half stars available. This one would have been 2 1/2. I like Mr. May's work, but this series, for me, is not as good as the Lewis trilogy.
The motive for multiple murders is unbelievable, female characters are all described by their breasts alone and like the first book, the young man disliked by Enzo (because he is sleeping with one of those women) saves the day.
