Melina Marchetta was one of the English teachers at my high school. I remember her giving our whole Year 12 cohort a lesson in creative writing for our English HSC exams. I still have the notes I took that day haha!

Wow! That's pretty awesome Elias! Did you think she'd end up the way she has - famous for what she writes?

Well, that's the thing! Most of our teachers knew she was famous for what she wrote, but she never made a show of it and you wouldn't have known! To us, she was one of our English teachers and I think she liked it that way! I think by that point she'd already completed Finnikin of the Rock and was using several passages from that book to give us examples on how to effectively create tension. I still have and remember a note she gave us on using hard sounding consonants like d's, b's, hard c's, k's etc. to enhance action scenes. I remember her reciting a particular fight scene to illustrate this. I still use it in my own writing!
