It was tough to find a book I already had that fit the bonus.
Question: Am I able to count whatever pages I read, even if I decided I couldn't read anymore of the book because I didn't like it enough?
What we usually do for partial credits is this. If you start a new book during the challenge, you can take partical credit for the pages you've read so far. If we've moved into another challenge, then you can take partial credit for whatever pages are left after you've finished the book. So yes, you can count up to whatever point you decided to stop reading the book.
If it falls within the "bonus" boundaries, do I still get double points for it? Or does the entire book have to be read before you can get the bonus?

I feel with so many new people joining this challenge that the rules should be reposted to make sure that everyone is aware of how it works.
CHALLENGE GUIDELINES**PLEASE READ**The challenge is to count the pages you read (books, e-books count from BOM and challenges can count. Using the printed edition page count to count the # of pages in e-books and audiobooks is OK too!). Any books started in a PREVIOUS challenge and FINISHED in the current challenge can only be counted in the current challenge once the book is done. All other books can be counted as you read them. Whoever has the most pages read by challenge end gets a reward for themselves. The catch? NO BOOK BUYING DURING THE CHALLENGE. If you decide to join this little mini challenge you cannot purchase any books during the time of the challenge. If you purchase a book during a challenge, you can: A) Re-set your count to zero and continue in the challenge OR B) Sit out until the next challenge.. Although the point is to EARN your books =). Sometimes books are already on the way to you through: Wishlist swaps or pre-orders. These books are OK! Count the front and back pages, and add date to keep track of the title of the book read. This # should go next to the title [see examples on the currents posts:]. The winner picks the next Count Off Challenge. The pages counted will tally back to zero for new challenge. New comers, later comers you can join anytime but you start at zero. You are more than welcome to continue keeping track of original pages counted for personal reference.
This is more about sticking with reading down that TBR pile. Trying to keep those book buying impulses to a min. and counting pages really is a simple task that requires very little skill =P Any questions on how the guidelines work or what to do to join a challenge, please post a comment or PM me [Kenjii:].
Mini/Bonus-Challenge
Here is a way to get small rewards. As a host you are responsible for giving the rewards. Post on the thread a theme to be read during the current challenge. If someone can fulfill that challenge, they win! Then they can choose to host the next mini challenge.
An additional note to bonus challenges:
Occassionally a count off challenge may include a bonus (or two). This is where you can get double (or triple) the page count for a single book, provided it meets the bonus criteria. The criteria may be certain word(s) in the title, on the cover (or both), or in subject matter. You may specificially look for books that fit the bonus, to get the extra page counts, as this encourages you to read the theme of that particular challenge.
Jane wrote: "I feel with so many new people joining this challenge that the rules should be reposted to make sure that everyone is aware of how it works."Thanks Jane. A refresher is always good.
I just thought it would be good to remind ourselves of the rules and as it was posted as post one I thought alot of us would have forgotten to suggest it to the new people. Also it was good for me to be able to reacquaint myself with the rules lol

BJ - I have some veggie plants that I started on my windowsill a few weeks ago. Can I count planting them outside for the bonus? At the moment they're in tiny peat pots but they really need to be outside now as they're getting pretty big! :)
Jane wrote: "I just thought it would be good to remind ourselves of the rules and as it was posted as post one I thought alot of us would have forgotten to suggest it to the new people. Also it was good for me..."Yes. And as a reminder....
Please put the date you finish reading a book (so we know it falls within the dates of the current challenge) and if you have a partial page count, the page number you stopped at. This last bit is to help you when you go to finish counting the book after you're done reading it and know where to continue counting from.

Good idea, Jane!! I'll admit I haven't read the rules in a long time, so this is good for everyoneKenjii, this sentence jumped out at me: New comers, later comers you can join anytime but you start at zero.
Could that perhaps say: New comers, later comers you can join anytime but you can only count the pages you read during the time frame of the current challenge.
The reason I mention that is, when I first joined the challenge last June, I asked this very question, and your answer allowed me to do that.

BJ: Good point. I had started to rules to structure the challenge. As people joined I saw that it is OK to adjust according to how the challenges were running. If there is a way to prove your reading the book during the challenge [like status updates on GR:] then I'll allow you to use those pages.
So I'll update it to read:New comers, later comers you can join anytime but you can only count the pages you read during the time frame of the current challenge.
All finished books must be dated and partial reads must have the last pages read . So you can have that page to refer back to.
When we have new people join the challenge, or like every couple months I'll re-post the rules in the thread. No prob. If there's anything I need to update [things that have changed because of challenge structure, or things I have said but have not added or taken any from the guidelines:] Let me know.
If the 2 new guidelines read OK let me know and I'll post them.
Shouldn't the goal be 3,980 instead of 3,971? Because you're adding 2010 and 1970, right? That equals 3,980.
Christine wrote: "Shouldn't the goal be 3,980 instead of 3,971? Because you're adding 2010 and 1970, right? That equals 3,980."Christine, you are so right, and I'll change the original post. I just looked at my notes, and they are evidence that I should NOT post something at the end of a 19-hour day (I did mention insomnia, didn't I?!) Here's what I wrote down:

quick possibly a dumb and completly off-topic question ;) but does anyone have Gena Showalters the Darkest Night in paperback format that they could pm me the page numbers for the chapters? I have it in ebook format, but it was in a bundle with three other books, plus a short prequel that she wrote and while I have the total page number - I wanted to do a mid-read update...any help would be great thanks!
Okay, I feel stupid. I don't think any of these are right, but just in case... are any of the following correct 're' prefixes?Return

So, I found verification that Redeem, Return and Reliable are 're' prefix words: http://www.firstschoolyears.com/liter...Unless told otherwise, or if people protest, I'm going to assume those are okay to use.
Christine wrote: "Okay, I feel stupid. I don't think any of these are right, but just in case... are any of the following correct 're' prefixes?Return

Altho not a totally accurate rule of thumb, I'll go with this 'rule':
if you remove the 're' and still have a word (re+move), you can count it. That will lead to some errors, but I'm OK with that.
So from the list above, you can use return, redeem, reliable, and even revenge (to get vengeance against)
Do you have books with all those words, Christine?!
I have several that could work, but I've already read them:
The Rake and the Reformer Reforming a Rake The Return Of The Prodigal The Return of Sherlock Holmes
