I am not a writer, for just the use of the words "I am" implies that "it is my very essence to be a writer," and clearly that is not true. Labeling just limits us. With that said, the most important benefit I've had from working as a writer (both as an author and technical writer/editor) is that the self-employment gives me a lot of freedom, and that is more important to me than anything else in the world.
