Count Off Challenge
Deanna wrote: "Quick Question - I know it says if using ebooks, use the printed copy page number for count - what if its a book that hasn't been released in print yet? Since this book doesn't have a paper version, feel free to use a book of similar length.
one last question!! will a pre-order reset my number? I have the Mary Balogh pre-ordered and totally forgot about it and it showed up this morning...I hope not (I ordered it back in december...)
Thanks Kate! I did the math - because I leave my kindle in the same font size and took the locations of a book with known page numbers and some simple math later...(ok, so i'm slightly dorky...haha)Kenjii ~*~Black Kat~**~ wrote: "Deanna wrote: "Quick Question - I know it says if using ebooks, use the printed copy page number for count - what if its a book that hasn't been released in print yet? Deanna, preorders won't mess up and reset your count. Same with paperback swap as you don't always have alot of control over when those come through. The idea is not to order or buy new books during the challenge. Delivery isn't a problem. :) (And a few of us have been known to make a quick purchase between challenges, after one ends before a new one starts. lol)
yay! ok, i think i'm done on questions now! Briansgirl "Master Book Sale Huntress" wrote: "Deanna, preorders won't mess up and reset your count. Same with paperback swap as you don't always have alot of control over when those come through. The idea is not to order or buy new books durin..."
Also, buying rewards from winning a previous challenge doesn't break the rules as you earned those. :) Incentive to win. hehe Oh, and library books aren't a problem either as you aren't buying them.
Deanna: Great "newbie" questions though. Its a challenge but sometimes confusing challenge. So I am glad your getting clarity =D.
I am glad for it too. I hadn't know the answer to all of those questions. Thanks for asking them and getting clarification for all of us.

Fortunately for me, I liked this book a lot more than the last one I posted! It reminded me somewhat of Jane Austen's Emma, altho I liked Flora Poste a lot more than I did the character of Emma.

ahhh!!! must hurry up and finish this challenge!! ebay has the two outlander books i don't have on audio for auction and I wanna get them before they go, but I refuse to cave!! haha!

i refuse to! i'm too dang competitive! but they have buy it now, so I can get them as my reward when i'm done if i win! (and they are used...lol!)Debbie wrote: "lol, oh go ahead and cave, I was in the lead for about 2 seconds. I have never done that in this challenge. lol"
Should I or shouldn't I? lol Some of us that do this challenge regularly do occassionally cave if we find an offer too good to refuse. Then again, winning feels soooo good. (Since I only won once in all of last year. lol I've doubled my record this year already. hehe)

A day off and home alone allowed me to read another of Colin Dexter's Morse mysteries !
yep - audible has 1-4 and 7 in unabridged format, but there is something going on with the rights for 5 and 6, so they only have them in abridged (and i refuse to listen to an 800 page book in 10 hours because they've cut the good stuff out!)Debbie wrote: "lol sounds like a plan to me. lol Are those the Diana Gabaldon you are referring to?"
know what you mean. I have a couple of them in my teetering TBR. Let me know when you get around to reading them, if I don't have too much going already maybe we can read them together (at least the first one).
oh i've read them (multiple times) and loved them - but since I drive an hour each way to work every day, i listen to them in the car - i mean for 50hrs each, that is a whole month of driving (almost)Debbie wrote: "know what you mean. Deanna wrote: "yep - audible has 1-4 and 7 in unabridged format, but there is something going on with the rights for 5 and 6, so they only have them in abridged..."Gabaldon talked about this on her website or in a Q&A - she didn't have enough clout as a writer when she signed the original audio rights contract, and that still has a year or two to go on books 5 & 6. So the unabridged versions of those two cost an arm and a leg! Now she can write her own ticket, so book 7 came out in reasonably-priced unabridged immediately. I agree with you completely about abridged versions!
yep - i ts going to cost me quite a bit (about $175 for the two) - but i'm willing to pay it...since I'll listen to them multiple times!BJ Rose wrote: "Deanna wrote: "yep - audible has 1-4 and 7 in unabridged format, but there is something going on with the rights for 5 and 6, so they only have them in abridged..."

yep, but can't find them any cheaper and they aren't even available new anymore (at least that i've been able to find) - people on amazon are selling them for over $200 each - I did the break down on one that is going to cost me $80 - and its about 48 hours long - that still works out to less than a cost of a book that I could read in an hour...so its expensive, but well worth it for my sanity of driving in DC traffic every morning ;)Briansgirl "Master Book Sale Huntress" wrote: "wow. That's expensive."
I can understand that. Last year I found a great deal at a thrift shop... the first four Harry Potter books as audio books on cassette tapes. First was opened, but all were there. Other 3 books were still sealed in plastic. Cost: $1.00 each. I got lucky.

I'm out. Or Reset to Zero. I bought some books today. Let me explain. I'm overweight and trying to lose weight. My doctor said I should walk 30 mins a day. My parents are giving me their treadmill they aren't using anymore (they got gym memberships), but before we can move it, I'm trying to exercise. I decided to walk to the thrift shop a mile away. It's 20ºF out with packed snow and ice. To motivate myself, after bundling up in hiking boots, ear muffs, etc to walk the two miles, I let myself buy a few books if I could find anything. (Although, I had to carry it home! lol).I got:
(For $1 each)
Sundays at Tiffany's by James Patterson
Rewriting Monday by Jodi Thomas
(In a bag that cost $1 - works out to 10 cents a book.)
The Sergeant's Secret Son by Bonnie Gardner
Having Her Boss's Baby by Susan Mallery
Practice Makes Pregnant by Lois Faye Dyer
Home to Family: Heart of the Rockies by Ann Evans
Mad About the Major: In Uniform by Roz Denny Fox
Quinn's Woman by Susan Mallery
Wedding Bell Blues by Heather Graham
Carrera's Bride by Diana Palmer
Glory, Glory by Linda Lael Miller
A Game Of Chance by Linda Howard
(In a bag that cost $4 - works out to 40 cents a book. I bought the bag because I collect Carla Neggars books and didn't have this one and it's OOP. Have to see if any of the others are decent or not. lol Had to buy the whole sealed bag to get the one book I wanted.)Family Matters by Carla Neggers
Jared's Love - Child by Sandra Field
Heart of Honor by Caroline Courtney (Regency Romance) (1980)
Corsican Gambit by Sandra Marton
The Reluctant Hero by Lenora Worth
His Runaway Son by Dee Holmes
To Have & to Hold by Lori Herter (1983)
Sea Nurse by Diana Douglas (1970)
The Looking Glass War by John le Carré (1965)
Mister God, This Is Anna by Fynn (1974)
Those last two are a bit different. The rest are romances. Not a bad haul for $7 plus tax.
Wow, I say that was worth it - congrats on walking there and back. I use to do that all the time. Good for you on both books and walking.
Go for it Kate!! Have you considered Audiobooks - I love them for working out or driving? and I know on PBS if you are a member you can get them (i think they cost 2 credits)
I have just a handful of audiobooks. A few are abridged however. I'm looking forward to my Louis L'Amour westerns read by Willie Nelson on my next car trip.
