Set in the Bahamas, DP tries her hand at a “gangster hero” who is really working with the Feds.

Heroine is a poor little seamstress from Jacobsville who is vacationing with her wealthy older (by 16 years) sister and brother-in-law. Why the heroine is poor when her doting sister is rich, makes no sense, but no need to look too closely. The heroine never bothered to figure out

Hero sees the heroine being assaulted by her date from his casino’s cameras and rescues her. It is quickly established that he is a gangster going straight and he has won many quilting contests.

The H/h have a whirlwind courtship that they keep secret for the heroine’s protection. The heroine falls pregnant, but loses the baby when she tries to stop an assassination attempt on the hero. Hero ends up with amnesia and this how DP manages to throw in some hero cruelty. He tells the heroine she’s not his type and too plain, etc . . .

Meanwhile heroine finds out her true parentage and goes home to Jacobsville to lick her wounds.

By Christmas, she has forgiven her parents and the hero has created an apology baby quilt. There’s a big proposal dinner and then a rollcall list of previous characters attending their wedding.

I’m leaving out all the drug dealers and money launderers, etc . . . There was also a nice tour of Paradise Island and other Bahaman delights. This is an average DP with kind hero and a put-upoin heroine.

Diana Palmer checklist:
Hairy chest yes
Breast Description “bosom-challenged”
Cigarettes Hero quit cigars and started quilting, his security chief quit cigarettes and started knitting
AlcoholWhite wine with fish, red with beef, champagne with dessert
Town Descriptions "There were Christmas trees in almost every window, including one right next to the statue of Big John Jacobs." Heroine works as a seamstress at the dry cleaners
Gardenia Scent OW has cloying perfume
LOL detail Hero is a gangster but is also featured on quilting TV programs. Either he’s notorious and everyone is afraid of him, or he’s not.
Cutesy detail Quilter hero exclaiming over batik prints and fat quarters/Cowboys planning weddings.
DP hobbyhorse Addictions are a chemical imbalance.
DP is trolling us Every character in the Jacobsville universe shows up for the wedding and all the cowboys, including the Hart brothers, plan the wedding.

“(...)he was wondering why he’d had such an extensive conversation with a woman who didn’t appeal to his senses at all. She seemed like a kind woman, but she didn’t stimulate him or make him wish for a closer acquaintance. There couldn’t have been anything between them, he decided.”
(...)
“I still don’t understand why the Mason woman risked her life and her child’s life to save mine. She isn’t my type. I don’t even find her interesting. Surely I didn’t encourage her?”

So he lost his memory but after I’ve read his thoughts about h, I asked myself how could I believe his love?

“I know. You’re remembering what I said to you, that you weren’t my type, that I didn’t believe I could ever have been interested in you. But the doctors explained it to me. Even when I had amnesia, I was still trying to protect you. Deluca was after me and you were in danger if you were near me.” He smiled gently. “You see, it wasn’t that I didn’t care. I cared so much that even amnesia didn’t affect it.”

Sorry Ms. Palmer, I didn’t buy your explanation. Besides, He was not cruel enough for me. ;)

This is where the hero is a mob boss that loves quilting and gardening.
Yes, you understood very well.
He's a reformed mob boss and loves knitting quilts.
I can only imagine this cruel and mean man, used to beating his rivals with his own hands, going home and, after showering away his enemies' blood, qiuetly sit and knit with his glasses perched on his nose and watch a soap opera.
Really???
He meets and save the h from a man who attacked her in a lift, and they basically fall in love.
That is, red riding hood and the big bad wolf.
But he's involved with another mob boss and he decides to protect the heroine from any danger by rejecting her publicly.
The heroine, who is also pregnant, saves the hero's wife when a sniper tries to kill him and doing it she loses her baby (while the H loses his memory)
The second part of the book is the hero trying to understand why the heroine save him and who she is, since she's not his type and she's plain and uninteresting.
Eventually he remembers her and the excuses he makes for his awful behaviour to her is that he was stil trying to protect her subconsiously.
Hah! I can se Doctor Freud laughing and turning in his grave!
Whatever.
It's DP and we have to accetp even the most stupid and unbelievable things.
The enemy is won and they can be happy again.

After seeing St Margaret's review of this there is NO WAY I wasn't tracking down a copy of this and reading it because who can resist a quilting gangster and a knitting major domo/bodyguard type?

I don't need to say much about this because St Margaret's review does it far better justice than I could but I loved the way the hardened gangster fell for the doormatty h. He then proceeded to lose brownie points for treating her like excrement when he was going through his helping the feds phase and he didn't get any better once he received a head injury and developed amnesia after she saved his life.

I mean what kind of man goes around telling women they aren't his type and he never would tap that? He has clearly been taking tact lessons from my darling husband who I have warned on may occasions to just not speak and look pretty because his mouth constantly gets him into bother!

The h was an extreme doormat and took everything he dishes out without a sound but she showed little glimmers of hope by dropping straight into a relationship with him knowing it was against her morals and her family wouldn't approve.

Thanks again StM for bringing this title into my orbit :)

We get it, Diana Palmer, she's plain. Thanks for making her constantly hear this from the H.

RE-READ SEPTEMBER 2024

The heart that truly loves never forgets...

Those were the words that came to my mind after reading Carrera's Bride. Yes, absolutely. The mind may forget, but the heart will always remember.

I liked Delia's character. She's strong and passionate. She's also stubborn when it comes to people who matter to her. She's willing to fight and do everything to save the man she loves. Marcus Carrera is one of my favorite Diana Palmer heroes. Beyond his notorious stature lies a great man. His character is a bit different from other heroes, but it completely sucked me in.

Although the romance between Delia and Marcus seemed rushed, I still enjoyed it. It was actually perfect. They were completely honest about their feelings toward each other. I also loved what Diana Palmer did with their story. Of course, love is not always a bed of roses. I loved the amnesia twist. I didn't see that coming. I felt sorry for Delia because Marcus doesn't remember anything about her, but I loved that even though he didn't remember her, he felt something for her that he couldn't explain.

If you're looking for an enjoyable read, Carrera's Bride is highly recommended.

Loved most of it but really lost a lot of respect for me for a character standpoint when he kills their baby and has very little compassion for her in the hospital!! Come on like he would not know that she risked her life and her baby for the man she loves?! Seriously, please and he is a smart man?! Not! I also hate how she cuts all her hair. It's her only attribute that the hero loves, her hair. Why must it always go when the heroine is sad. I know it's designed to show her morning the lost of her love but really... Girl can't cry or even cut her wrist or something else!!!! Must the hair always go?!? The way I see it the hero was a selfish jerk and she was a naive fool who fell for his lines. I can't say I hated it because they had some powerful emotions going on at the end with the quilt and I was in tears at that point. That scene redeemed most of the book for me. Just not my favourite.
Typical DP virgin heroine, manwhore hero, and crazy plot bringing them together. Girl suffers as usual and man has his cake and eats it too. Wish she was the one who forgot their love and he had to suffer like he deserved to.

Rating: 4.5 stars.
Reread: August 11, 2015 (Chapter 9 and onwards).
First read: May 02, 2015

This was such a beautiful book. I tend to stray away from DP's books that are centred around suspense, crime and that whole enchilada, because they tend to bore me. When I read romance, I primarily want romance and this book was 85% romance 15% suspense, crime mob-ish centred.

Marcus, our hero, is a bit of an odd sort. For one, he quilts and sews as a hobby and has won many competitions because of his talent. On the other hand, he is a mob godfather ex mob boss, turned 'good guy’, turned rat for the government. Marcus wasn't a straight up arse when we first meet him, but he wasn’t overly impressed with our heroine at the start. Nevertheless, he was overall a decent guy. He even fixes Delia’s dress on their first encounter!

Delia is (I imagine), the bookish sort who like most DP heroine’s is blonde, slender, virginal and sweet. She is however, a strong and passionate character. I loved how she handled the whole amnesia plot, my favourite part of the book.

The book is a wonderful read. Predictable, but VERY enjoyable. There is no one like Diana Palmer. If only I lived in the United State. I would love to go to her book signing!

A 3.5 stars. I absolutely loved the beginning, the pure emotion and the intense passion. I loved the characters and I loved the story. <3 <3 It was only in the middle and the end that I didn't like, especially the amnesia theme.

The one with quilting.

Unworldly quilting seamstress? Check
Former crime boss who also quilts? Check.

Wait. Go back. Former crime boss who quilts?!?!?! Yes. Former crime boss who quilts. I can't make this stuff up. But DP can!

Our two quilters engage in some premarital hanky panky and surprisingly the crime boss quilter actually has a condom! Saints be praised.

But, this being DP, of course it rips. Do any DP heroines who engage in premarital hanky panky emerge not pregnant? I swear they all get pregnant. It's like anyone associated with Jacobsville has super sperm or a magic penis or something. DO NOT ENGAGE IN UNPROTECTED SEX WITH ANYONE FROM JACOBSVILLE! And double up on what protection you've got!

Have I mentioned the amnesia? Or the crazy ass crime syndicate/money launderers? Or the miscarriage? And let's not forget the quilting!

Série Homens do Texas 30
Doce Desejo
Diana Palmer

ADORO!!!!!!!!!

AMEI!!!!!!!!!

I found the story interesting until the end. Carrera was a jerk. I know that he had his reasons for pushing her away but that didn't make it hurt any less for Delia. If he knew what was going to go down I don't see why he didn't keep away from Delia until the deal was done. Was it really impossible for him to wait a couple of months? Also, I don't understand why he said at the beginning that he was going to use Delia because of her family connections when that didn't come into play at all. Delia was such a doormat too. After all the pain & suffering he put her through he just showed up & gave her a baby blanket and she just ran into his arms? Seriously? She should have made him explain everything to her and let him grovel a little at least. No pride or dignity there.

One of my favorite. It's been a while since I read Diana Palmer's book with familiar names in it. Cy Parks, Eb Scott.. Miss them!

I don't really like the way Marcus lost his memories, it's kind of ridiculous. But then again, I liked it. Nailed it, Diana Palmer!

Carrera's Bride by Diana Palmer is a captivating addition to the Long, Tall Texans series. The story follows Marcus Carrera, a notorious and enigmatic figure, who finds his life intertwined with that of Delia Mason. When Delia finds herself in peril, Marcus becomes her unexpected protector, leading to a journey of trust, transformation, and undeniable attraction.

Palmer masterfully delves into themes of vulnerability, healing, and the power of love. The chemistry between Marcus and Delia is palpable, and their evolving relationship is both tender and intense. The setting adds a rich backdrop to their story, enhancing the emotional depth of the narrative.

For readers who appreciate romance novels that explore complex characters and the journey to love, Carrera's Bride offers a compelling and satisfying read.

Reformed mobster and ruthless casino owner who is into quilting and flowers... yeah I know. He also goes to quilting conventions with a Texas ranger and a cop... and his henchman is into knitting...

What the hell is going on is DPlandia?

It was fine, but what I would call 'DP light' because the H was genuinely nice, and they pretty much fall in love and declare their undying devotion to each other within 24 hours. There is a very understandable 'mean moment' and some amnesia (a plot device I loathe) but all in all everybody is very sweet and lovey dovey and nice to each other... it just doesn't feel right you know? I kind of miss my mean, cruel, hairy alpha holes.

Speaking of hairy, I don't remember if our H has a majestic pelt of wiry hair on his chest. Very concerning.

First off, this book's description is off. Way off! Carrera is not an FBI agent. He's an ex-mob boss, so to speak, working with the FBI. He is not Delia's bodyguard, but he does protect her.

Second, this is one of the better Diana Palmer books. It's original and warm-hearted. I love their romance and how tender the couple is together. Unfortunately, there are secrets that could destroy them, but I will say how strong Delia's character really is. Her love for Marcus is put to the test and in the end, it's her love that saves him.

I absolutely loved this book. It's heartwrenching, but tender at the same time. Recommended!

I purchased a copy of the steamy Carrera’s Bride by Diana Palmer, and this review was given freely.
It was ok. Drama-packed with a few twists and turns, this is a rocky instant attraction story of love and loss that contains an odd mix of gangster, innocence, rapid unplanned pregnancy, and quilting, which culminates in a happy ending that includes a reunion of couples from the series.
Multimillionaire, internationally known quilter, and reformed gangster Marcus Carrera, rescues the innocent Texas seamstress and quilting instructor Delia Mason
from a handsy date, inducting her into the dangerous and life-altering life of criminals and a sting operation.

Man oh man, this book made me sad, happy, and most content. Made believe there was still the world of love, real love and most of all good friends that only want the best and happiness for you. I wish that this book could have went on a couple more chapters, lol I read this almost everyday. I read all of Me. Palmer books, but this one have me hooked. I don't know where she can go from this one, I'm hoping I see them again when she write about Mr. Smith, I really hope and pray she do. Dedicated

I really enjoyed this book. Diana Palmer writes wonderful characters, great plotlines, and fun twists.

Delia Mason goes to The Bahamas with her sister and brother-in-law after the death of their mother, to help get over the loss. She meets Marcus Carrera in his hotel/casino, after he rescues her from a creep. He's not sure why, but he's drawn to the shy innocent woman. She sees him for who he really is, and isn't put off by the reputation. But will he risk everything for her?

There were a couple of fun plot twists involved, one that I saw, one that I enjoyed.

Delia Mason went on her first vacation ever at The Bow Tie Resort on Paradise Island. Unfortunately the people she went with convinced to go to dinner with Fred Warner. Fred would not taking no for answer and the owner of the resort came to her rescue. Marcus Carrera and Delia had something in common. They both were quilters. The more Marcus got to know her the more he cared about it. The story of when he want back to her hometown of Texas to talk to her was very funny. Delia also found out a secret from her upbringing. It all worked out in the end.

This one was really good. Loved the sweet, naive heroine and the badass mafia guy turned government agent. I love the way DP draws you into their daily lives that keeps you engaged. You don't want to skip over the "boring" parts, you want to immerse yourself in them. And I love heroines that have more to a life than the romance dictates. I love the honest banter between the MC's. So this one is a keeper! Kept me up half the night to finish it!
