R3: Team 3~Round 3 Reading Robots

It was cute and funny, but not really 'laugh out loud' funny; I had a smile on my face while reading. I needed a nice fluffy, light book after an especially (emotionally) exhausting book, and Flirting with a Naked Werewolf was absolutely perfect for that. I would recommend it to anyone (that already likes PNR or UF) needing a light uncomplicated book to cleanse the pallet after reading a 'heavy' book. It quirky and fun, but may fall flat unless you are really needing a simple fun story.

This is a very difficult book for me to review as I have very mixed feelings about it. The writing is good and the story line is very interesting. It kept my attention for most of it and I was engaged with the characters. But the feeling that the author had an agenda kept it from being more than a 3 star read. Katsa, is a young woman who is graced with an ability to kill people, or so she believes. She is an assassin and ahs been since she was a young girl. This has stunted her development. This fantasy tale is set in a land of 7 kingdoms, each with rulers of differing goodness. She is controlled by a King who is a bully and uses her as his personal weapon. She has a group of people she travels with but she does not really have feelings for anyone or understand what it is to care for anyone. One of her travels she meets up with the Prince of another of the Seven Kingdoms, who also is graced. Together they go on a mission to investigate another King who is suspected of great evil.
While this is a fantasy story, it is truly a coming of age story and feminist allegory. And that's where it loses me. I feel like I'm reading a book written by a sexual abuse survivor that I used to counsel many years ago. Katsa falls in love, but doesn't wish to to marry. No problem. Po is the most understanding male ever created in literature. She can whip his ass, that's no problem either. He completely understands her and accepts her. It's awesome. I want one. To give the author credit, Katsa does grow in her ability to give back, but you never get complete satisfaction. The resolution with the bad guy comes quickly at the end, which is rather unsatisfying and there is a side story with Po that just seems strange.
Overall, this is an enjoyable YA fantasy, but I would never recommend it to my daughters. It does nothing to teach them that love involves commitment and sacrifice. It's just a nice fantasy at the end.

plenty of time Alana...take it easy!

A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith
Read 9/12/12 - 4 stars
This book follows a young girl in the early 20th century. It was a very interesting book because the descriptions of life in that time period are illuminating. It does not try to gloss over unappealing aspects and makes the characters well-rounded. I am a little surprised it has taken me until now to read this book. It is one I would have enjoyed as a younger girl as well and I am a voracious reader.
Items claimed:

People: child
"an eleven yr old girl" pg 9
Famous landmark: Brooklyn Bridge

How are we doing Team? Ready for another item!!

Kirsten - I am doing the same thing! Now that Bingo has started it's going to get really complicated!! I'm trying to hold off on some books and figure it all out. Crazy.

Also I need a date finished in the post.

Week 3 - Famous landmark
Zeitoun by Dave Eggers

This book follows a family in New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina. I really liked getting a personal glimpse of what was happening and not just what the news reported. It was also interesting to get the perspective of someone from a different culture than mine.
Items claimed:
Place: Famous landmark - Garden District of New Orleans
"...wonderful old mansion in the Garden District..." pg 23
People: Couple
Main characters - the Zeitouns
Thing: Wheel
"...the bike blew a tire." pg 37
Color: Orange
"Looking around the orange room..." pg 50

Yes I will take it."
Awesome! I'll be reading Kill You Twice by Chelsea Cain. Page 32 "...beyond it all, was Mount St. Helens..."
Posting it now so I don't have to go back and look for it later.

Good job Danie!!!!

Great job on getting your reading done so early!! Go Reading Robots!!
And go Danie!! I have to search out my items today in my book.

I love this series, and have read all the previous ones in about a day and a half. I have nothing planned for today, and it seems like my illness from the other day is making another appearance, so I'll be vegging on the couch all day. Most likely I'll have the book finished by early tomorrow if not tonight.

Read 9/15....3 Stars!
The book is advertised as "If you liked Fifty Shades you'll like...." Yeah, well, I didn't...all that much. It was an okay read. I loved the heroine...a musician who was haunted by Vivaldi s Four Seasons and played in the London tube quite often. Dominik stops to watch her and is transfixed. He finds out who she is and contacts her offering a brand new violin (her's was damaged) if she agrees to an "arrangement." She is on the rebound from a break-up and goes along with it. She also is getting involved in the underground Kink community...you can see where this is going. I just did not feel the emotion...I like a little bit of romance....I just didn't connect. An okay read for me...just nothing spectacular.
Places-Famous Landmark: Washington Square Park (Manhattan NYC) hope this counts.
(Pg.215) "He had made a booking at a hotel on Washington Square."
(per wiki-pedia: "Washington Square Park is one of the best-known of New York City's 1,900 public parks. At 9.75 acres (39,500 m2), it is a landmark in the Manhattan neighborhood of Greenwich Village, as well as a meeting place and center for cultural activity.
People-Single Male:Dominik (Pg.27) "Dominik was immediately taken by the exquisite pallor of her neck and the fragile angle of her wrist as she moved the bow in white heat and gripped the neck of the violin."
Things-Wing: (Pg.28) "Not once did she open her eyes, lost in a trance, her mind engulfed in a world of music, flying on the wings of a song.">
Color-Yellow: Yellow (on cover)Title of the novel: Eighty Days Yellow

Oh he is...they struggle with the fact that they are not a couple and actually get it on with others in front of each other. (I know...this was not a great book)
I see a couple as two people committed to one another in a relationship that contains both physical and emotional or romantic elements. This was purely a non-monogamous sexual relationship.
They break off their sexual relationship and she moves to NYC....he misses her but in examining his feelings realizes he is not sure what he feels for her. They end the book realizing it is more than sex but not sure what it is and agreeing to see if something else is going to come of it.
A couple? not really....Single? Yeah they both talk inside their heads on how they are not committed and it is just sex. I imagine that in the coming books that might happen.
Is that okay? 'cause I can do something else??? Because at the beginning she is a couple with another dude.....

Week Three: Famous Landmark
Space In His Heart 9/15/12 **** stars
Kennedy Space Center (p.1)
Celebrity - Jay Leno (location 238)
Wing (location 711)
Blue (cover)
This is a really well written romance that is completely believable. Jessica Marlowe is a PR consultant who's been assigned to NASA to upgrade their public image and improve funding. She is a focused career woman and hopes to get a promotion at the end of this project. She chooses Deke Stockard as her astronaut of choice to become the sexy new look of NASA. To say the least he is not happy. He is busy trying to find problems with the shuttle and planning his next mission. What makes this such a good story is that it's real. Jessica and Deke have conflict and distrust in the beginning of their relationship, but it is not overdone or exaggerated in order to create false conflict. Jessica is overly committed to her career, but not in a false way. Her problems at work seem realistic and so is the way she handles them. Dialogue is natural and unforced. Deke is a solid, sexy man - not overly arrogant or obnoxious in his original dislike for Jessica. The story unfolds easily and while at times in the beginning it bogs down slightly - by the middle of the story it has a very brisk pace. There is a slight mystery written in to the story and the resolution is slightly forced but does not take away from the overall quality of the story. This is what contemporary romance should be.

Ok,I'll take it, just making sure.

Kill You Twice
Finished 9/15/2012 - 5 stars
My review might be biased, because I think Chelsea Cain has created one of the most twisted villains ever, but I really loved this book. Gretchen Lowell was again imprisoned for most of it, but this time was a bit different - the medication they gave her had made her go from a drop-dead gorgeous woman, to a woman who was barely recognizable. Archie Sheridan, to his credit, it trying to stop visiting Gretchen. He put a good effort into ignoring the calls from her psychiatrist, but eventually breaks down and goes to see her, which I knew was going to happen. The time he brought Henry with him though, I was cracking up. Go Henry! He deserved that moment of seeing for himself that Gretchen had lost all her power.
Of course, it wouldn't be much of a mystery/thriller novel if there wasn't some sort of crime aspect to it. I had figured out who the killer really was about halfway through the book, but I definitely did not see Pearl's real identity coming. My jaw hit the floor. Whaaaat!?!?!?!?
I'll be continuing with this series. As usual, Chelsea Cain ended everything with a bang (quite literally with this book) and I can't wait to find out what happens next.
Single Male - Archie Sheridan is divorced, has no relationship.
Famous Landmark - Mount St. Helens - "...beyond it all, was Mount St. Helens..." page 32
Bag - "Henry held out an evidence bag..." - page 14
White - cover is white.
I know the US version is the blue one with the face on it, but I have the UK one, which is white with a rope on it.

Thanks! If you're into mysteries and don't mind a little gore, I'd definitely recommend the series. The first is Heartsick.

Read from September 14 to 16, 2012
Well, overall I give The Might Storm a solid 4 stars.
The first half of the book, I was not overjoyed with the situation or Tru's handling of it. Generally, she is not on any 'favorite character' list of mine. She needed to put on her big girl panties MUCH sooner than she did.
Jake... oh, Jake. He was so swoony I was able to look past Tru's shortcomings. He has issues, he's somewhat bossy, and he is an overconfident ass. I didn't feel his demanding, rock star personality to be unrealistic or unbelievable. And his moments of romance- although not a 'romantic' guy by his own estimation he really does have unbelievable panty vanquishing powers they just melt my heart.
The book is almost like two books in one. There's 'before' triangle and 'after' triangle. The 'before' was akin to the train wreck of a relationship in Beautiful Disaster. It make me cringe, but I couldn't stop reading. I found myself up WAY too late reading. On the other hand, it also frustrated me and drove me up the wall.
'After' was totally different. Still the same characters, essentially the same story but different obstacles were rearing their ugly head. Again, I felt frustrated with Tru's choices and how she handled everything. But, I had less problem with this section compared to the first. I also wish we got a little more details, or seen more of Jake's 'inner demons'. I was ultimately satisfied with the ending (although one part I say coming a mile away).
I would recommend this for anyone that likes 'sex, drugs, and rock 'n roll'; rich, handsome, alpha, damaged males; somewhat spicier romance; and a 'messy' love story. It's not all hearts and flowers, and easy love. It's downright volatile.
Couple: (location 4965) "...it almost feels like we're a couple tonight, the way he's being so attentive to me," (they are a couple in the book during part of it)
Famous Landmark: (location 9716) "...the whole touristy thing, Eiffel tower and that,"
Smoke: (location 1275) "Do you smoke?"
Orange: (location 4890) "... with white and orange bars going across the toe area."

I was hoping I could read it fast. I have been at my sister's for the past 2.5 days and wanted to get it done before I left. It read a lot like a novel for me which was nice since sometimes I get really bogged down trying to read a nonfiction book.

Thanks! If you're into mysteries and don't mind a little gore, I'd definitely recommend th..."
I just checked out Heartsick from my library. A coworker recommended it highly since I love to read mysteries. It had been on my TBR for awhile and I recently had a couple more people say I really needed to read it.
