Book: The Last Olympian - Rick Riordan
Rating: ★★★★
Completed: 9/16
Review:
I really like this series. It was a little cheesy at times, but still very entertaining. Very much like Harry Potter, but it didn't get as dark. I look forward to reading more from Riordan.
People: Child: pg. 176 "You know why," Hades said. "This idiot son of Poseidon cannot be allowed to be the child of the prophecy."
Place: Famous Landmark: pg. 202 It was late afternoon when the taxi dropped me at the Empire State Building .
Thing: Wheel : pg. 417 It wasn't a sound you hear much in New York, but I recognized it immediately: chariot wheels .
Color: Orange : pg. 48 It was bright orange with a fanged mouth big enough to swallow a gymnasium.
note - page numbers are off as it is an ebook.

Review:I've read many books about witches in the paranormal universe but none that has taken quite by surprise as A Discovery of Witches. Witches, vampires, and daemons live along side humans who don't know of their existence outside of myths, legends, fairytales, and superstitions. Diana Bishop comes from a long line of witches on her mother's and her father's as well. Diana denies using her gifts as a witch much to the dismay of other witches and her aunts. When she discovers a long lost book on alchemy her world is turned upside. Matthew Clairmont, a vampire, has been watching Diana from afar and close up and can't figure out what is different about her. Matthew grows fond of Diana and the feeling is mutual much to the dismay of the magical community. Together they will discover long lost secrets of the magical community that no one really wants found. Discover the secrets for yourself in A Discovery of Witches.
Items ClaimedPlace-Famous Landmark:To an ordinary historian, it would have looked no different from hundreds of other manuscripts in Oxford's Bodleian Library, ancient and worn. Page 1
People-Non Human:No, it was a vampire who watched me now. Page 17
Thing-Smoke:Cigar smoke from good cigars, like they used to have at the Marlborough Club when the Prince of Wales stopped in. Page 174

Review: I am never going to get the time I wasted on this book back. Stilted writing, cardboard characters, wooden dialogue and a plot that didn't seem to know where the hell it was going. Not my cup of tea and not keen to try this author again in a hurry.
Person: NON-HUMAN - Pg 104. "Well, who wouldn’t fancy an alien with a penchant for bondage?”
Place: FAMOUS LANDMARK - Pg 22-23. "She enjoyed her relaxed view of all the famous landmarks she customarily raced past, with eyes to the pavement, on the way to some urgent appointment or other.” and "They drove on through the West End, past the theatres with the queues just starting to form, around Piccadilly Circus with its transient population of foreign-language students and teenage runaways, along Piccadilly to the south side of Hyde Park, where the traffic freed up and they were able to bowl along, Anna’s hair streaming in the pleasant breeze as she admired the gracious buildings of Knightsbridge."
Item: BLOOD - Pg 33. "Her heart folded in on itself and her blood thinned.”
Colour: YELLOW - Pg 95. "She lay down in the flower bed and rolled around in rapture, pollinating herself, covering her skin in the bright yellow effusion.”

Ok. Well I am 60% into my book and will finish it tonight. Next week, i will be on top of my game!!!

Review: This book was good, but I think what I really liked is the potential that I see. At the heart of this book was a group called the Dark Protectors fighting the Kurjans, the bad vampires. Both groups were seeking to find mates and reproduce as they can only reproduce with humans who have enhanced abilities.
Talen meets Cara, and he knows she is the mate he has waited 300 years for. However convincing Cara, is a whole other subject. As Talen tries to get Cara to see his heart, he also has to protect her from the Kurjan leader who decided that Cara should be his mate. So the battle of Cara and her family takes center stage.
The writing was okay, but the plot/storyline has a lot of potential. I feel it. There are other couples whose journey will be more interesting—Dage & Emma, Jordan and Katie, even Janie’s story. So I will continue on with this series…a little later.
I read this book in kindle, so in parenthesis is the kindle location.

Pat you already claimed stairs in post 111, do you want to change to something else?

Well done team!!!!

don't forget beach or coast is acceptable also

I just finished Obsidian a couple days ago - there's a lake, so there should be a shoreline of some kind. Oh and a beach is mentioned. Forgot about the beach. It's a good book - very quick to read.
I will be reading To Tame A Highland Warrior by Karen Marie Moning.

thanks Alley -- i want Discovery of Witches off my TBR pile. but I'll probably go with Obsidian, i think it'll be a quicker read.

Review: This book was about two Scottish clans that hated each other, but were fiercely loyal to the King. In order to make sure they stop killing each other, and remain available to defend his crown, the King devised a peace treaty of sorts. He forced a marriage between the two clans. The Montgomerys and the Armstrongs.
Obviously both clans are going to treat each other like crap, but in the end, love won everyone over.
I enjoyed it.

We had my son's birthday party yesterday, so was cleaning and cooking for that on Friday and then it turned out to be an 8 hour thing (I thought everyone would go home after about 3 hours) so by the time everyone left, we all just crashed. Have spent most of this morning doing a clean-up and I'm about to go have another nap. I'm knackered!
Anyway, haven't been able to find shoreline but I have found a couple of references to beach in

Book: Creed
Finished: 24-09-12

Review: This was a 3.5 stars read for me, from an author who is usually a solid 4 star read. It's not that I didn't like the book. I did. Let's face it, Kristen Ashley even on a bad day knows how to weave a good yarn with some ass kicking of bad guys and some steamy sex scenes to boot :-) But it was less than I was hoping for.
I loved Sylvie's character. She. kicked. ass. And it's so novel to see a female lead in a Kristen Ashley book (apart from Jules in Rock Chick Renegade), who can lead. Who can be tough, who smokes, who can separate her heart from her body and who swears. Because she is meant to be a badass, through her job and through her own perceptions of herself, so for me, it worked. I found it refreshing to see a heroine who wasn't a cookie-cutter version of every other and whose history completely explained why she had become the way she was.
What disappointed me was that the plot (except for the backstory) and the hero seemed so much like others in the K.A. lineup... Don't get me wrong, there's an element of "if it aint broke don't fix it" going on here, because I have to say K.A.'s heroes are smokin' hot! But I felt that in trying to get these two characters together, they changed from the tough bad-ass H/h we meet at the beginning of the book into something too mushy. I loved the angst, loved the backstory, loved the characters at the beginning of the book. But when I finished, I was left flat and wondering if K.A. has started writing from a formula. I hope not.
Person: SINGLE MALE (DAD) - Pg 152. "Still, even remembering that, it must be said I didn’t know what I expected of single Dad Creed but this definitely wasn’t it.”
Place: SHORELINE (BEACH) - Pg 22. "The sun felt better at the beach but that was because there was a breeze. ”
Item: SMOKE - Pg 101. "I put the cigarette to my lips, took a deep drag and blew out the smoke, my eyes trained out the window of my back room to the dark night.”
Colour: PURPLE - Pg 278. "I settled in, cheek to his chest and saw the still ugly, livid, blue and purple bruise edged with yellow that marred him where the bullet hit his chest.”

Items Claimed:
Person: They returned with an army of Oneida warriors. Pg 209
Place: With no shorelines to orient you, there's nothing to steer by but your instincts. Pg 79
Thing: Even though his shirt was transparent, it somehow retained the smell of stale cigarette smoke and the chocolate caramels that he kept in his pocket.
Color: She appeared with a huge black medical bag. Pg 407
Review: In the world of Diana Bishop (witch) and Matthew Clairmont (vampire) most of the character contact is between any combination of demons, vampires and witches with a sprinkle of humans as they exist in the human realm. These factions (each for their own reason) vie to obtain more information about the coveted and legendary manuscript that Diana mysteriously and unwittingly opens while researching facts for a speech. Is Diana really the key? Why would a witch conspire with a vampire? What does this mean for demon-kind? What secrets does the manuscript actually hold? These questions and more are the basis for the origin story of this unique series.
Overall it wasn’t a bad read it just wasn’t necessarily the read for me. While the story flowed well, I believe it would have flowed just as well just as well with fewer words and with a more self aware & less petulant female lead. The idiosyncrasies and traits for the characters were well drawn and allowed to you clearly see them and their motives. The conceit that the obscure manuscript holds all the answers that everyone is seeking serves as a great bone of contention among the races. When things finally began to move they came at breakneck speed and revelations overflowed in an effort to make up for the very slow start perhaps.

Review:
I love this series. What's not to like about a book with Sirens, Druids, Goblins, Mages, Jinn, and even a Dragon? In this installment, Charlie (main character) travels to the off-world dimension of Elysia to find her missing Siren partner (view spoiler) . Very action-packed!
People: Single Female: on cover
Place: Shoreline: pg. 15 Liz and her crew were already on the shoreline near the dock.
*Thing: Glitter: pg. 175 Some of the calmer pools were crystal clear and the bottoms glittered .
Color: Blue: pg. 8 Will Garrity's gorgeous gray- blue eyes that has always put me in mind of stormy skies were now changed...
