Suggestions for Future Categories/Challenges
Thanks Yz. :O) The threads are up, in a general kinda way. (If you could "gooey" the first 3 posts I made at the top of the thread?) Btw, am I the only one having trouble with the add book/author and preview features?
Melody,I changed the folder's title and put the three threads as sticky.
Let me know if that is what you want to happen.
Looking good. :)
Thanks Yz! I did some further clean up today, and I see Flib has added some great info! We're off and rollin'! !!! :O)
I thought of a fun one today: pair up with buddy who is doing the same challenge and choose a book to read with them.
Yz the Whyz wrote: "Melody,I don't get the suggestion. Can you explain further?"
Like read the month or season, read 14 (or 9) titles/authors that spell out the year. :O)
St Patrick's Day is in March, maybe you could incorporate Irish themes into one of the categories, ie. author, character, setting in Ireland, green, shamrocks, Celtic themes, etc, either on cover or incorporated in book's title.
For February:
title with the "love", "heart" or "Valentine" in it.
Black history month - book with an African-American main character or written by an African-American author.
Charles Dickens Day 2/7 - read a book written during or set in his lifetime (1812-1870)

Valorie wrote: "How about an Author Recommended Challenge? Pick an author and read a book from each author they recommend. Example...Gena Showalter recommends
1. Jenna Black
2. Candace Havens
3. Jennifer Armintro..."
Valorie: That is a great idea. I know you are part of PRJ, and maybe we could use that challenge there? Let me know!
Also Yz: I love the Pick-It-For-Me idea would you mind me tweaking it a little and using it on my site?
Thanks everyone. These are great ideas.
Jan wrote: "For February: Charles Dickens Day 2/7 - read a book written during or set in his lifetime (1812-1870)..."
Or anything written by or about Charles Dickens should count as well.
(Anyone else remember the Bonanza episode where Charles Dickens dropped by? The episode's subject involved what was then, non-existant international copyrights.)
Briansgirl - oh yeah, I should have included that. LOL
The winter olympics start next month, maybe we could read a book where the main character is an athlete or the story is sports related. For President's Day, read a book that includes a politician or a character involved in some sort of politics.
Ash Wednesday, read a book that has ash, smoke, fire, etc. in the title.
Instead of just having an "F" title for February, we could go the whole hog."F"avourite author
"F"avourite genre
"F"avourite book or "f"avourite re-read
"F"riends shelf - choose a book from any friend on your list
"F"riend recommends
"F"ree pick from your TBR pile
....
you get my drift
Nikki wrote: "The winter olympics start next month, maybe we could read a book where the main character is an athlete or the story is sports related...."The Winter Olympics take place in Canada. Perhaps for Geography category we could read a book set in Canada or written by a canadian author.

I like that idea too :)
Ferbruary:February is the shortest month so one book could be a novella.
The lover's theme behind Valentine's day is supposed to have flourished in the Middle Ages. So we could have a book set during the medieval time period.
March:
March is named after Mars the God of war, so one book could have a war as the backdrop.
A soothsayer told Julius Caesar to beware the Ides of March, maybe a book featuring a Psychic.
I love the idea myself and it means everybody would get a chance to read whatever they wanted really. =)I am so pedantic (read anal) that I often am reading books for challenges that I don't really want to read but I do just to finish a challenge and then I've got tonnes of other books I want to read, but I put them off cos they don't fit the challenge categories. OMG I frustrate myself!!!!!
I'm the same LibraryLass. That's why my Create your own challenge for 2010 was to read 5 books for my various categories/genre shelves that I like but didn't find time for last year as they didn't always fit challenges.
Ok, I've had way too much fun with the silly holidays. :O)For February (although many of these could be fun anytime):

Get a Different Name Day - Read a novel featuring a character who changes their name (amnesia, hiding out, playing a role).
International Dog Biscuit Day, Walking the Dog Day, & Love Your Pet Day - Read a novel featuring a dog as a major character or plot device.
More silly holidays for March (or whenever). :O)National Craft Month - Read a novel featuring a "crafty" hero/heroine (any definition of the term).

Jewel Day - Read a book with a jewel in the title or as a character name.
Namesake Day & Incredible Kid Day - Read a novel featuring a character with the same name as a special child in your life.
Your years best questions reminded me Yz, howabout we revisit the Men We Love Challenge. Or perhaps try a Women We Love version?
Some other suggestions for Feb:Feb 3 - The Day the Music Died - read a book related in some way to music or featuring plane crash or which title is also name of the song
Feb 4 - Facebook founding - internet theme in a book(?)
Feb 7 - Mud March - woman is dominant and/or a boss
Feb 11 - Julia Child's show premieres - cooking, food theme in a book
Feb 15 - YouTube is launched - book that has a trailer or review on YouTube
Feb 19 - last day of Aquarius - New Age theme in a book
Annvelwis wrote: "Feb 19 - last day of Aquarius - New Age theme in a book"Or perhaps more importantly for those born at the end of the month, Feb 20 - first day of Pisces - A book about or having to do with fish or fishermen.
Hmm how about read about yourselfFor exapmle:
Read your name, a book or author that has your initial, either first, last or both find it.
Read your birthday, a book that is either by an author that shares your month or one that is set in the season that yours falls in. Mines January so it could be a winter book. Or one that has your birthstone, flower on it or in the title.
Read your favorite color, in the title or book cover
Read your location, a book set where you live or written by an author from where you are.
Read a book that has your favorite animal in the title or on the cover.
That`s all I can think of for now.
Melody wrote: "Your years best questions reminded me Yz, howabout we revisit the Men We Love Challenge. Or perhaps try a Women We Love version?"I love this idea, but I'm suffering from a slight drought of challenge creativity. :)
Anybody willing to put together the categories for the Women We Love version? Just pm it to me, and I'll schedule it for the next quarterly challenge (that will be after our A Royal Line Challenge is over).
I think I have enough categories to put together the Women We Love Challenge.Special kudos to Briansgirl and Nikki for helping me put together the list.
This will definitely be our next quarterly challenge.
I don't know if it's already been said, (7 pages of discussion) but I liked the authors birthday we did in January, I would like to see that as a standing book every month.
A group members birthday is used every month. We have a list posted of everyone in the group whose birthday is in any given month with a link to their shelves on GRs.I hope not too many presidental categories are used as they'll be harder to fill. With the Winter Olympics running in Feb as well as it being the shortest month, I won't have as much reading time.
Melody and I were discussing what the 4 BHB books should be for February. Here are four I was thinking about. Does anyone have opinions?

Here's a list of books to choose from:
http://www.goodreads.com/review/list/2505272-flibbityfloob?shelf=2010-bhb-booklist
Might convince me to start Pride & Prejudice again. Been so long I need to start over. I didn't understand it the first time so rented the movie from the library to watch then the book started to make more sense. Have since (for a quarter) found the Cliff Notes for P&P.
FlibBityFLooB wrote: "Melody and I were discussing what the 4 BHB books should be for February. Here are four I was thinking about. Does anyone have opinions? They sound great Flib, but I'm thinking we might swap out Bet Me for Blue Smoke, just for the sake of making them fit the categories better.
And then we can add a featured author. Who's up for Jayne Ann Krentz / Amanda Quick / Jayne Castle / et al? :O)
Just a thought, Melody.Since we have a featured author challenge in the group, would it be overlapping a bit, if we also have a featured author in the BHB reads?
Can we just stick to book selections for the BHB section? I'll leave the decision to you and Flib about that.
A future suggestion for a book selection would be to read a book whose author's name is a city, country, or state.
Yz the Whyz wrote: "Just a thought, Melody.Since we have a featured author challenge in the group, would it be overlapping a bit, if we also have a featured author in the BHB reads? ..."
I didn't think of it if like that Yz. I was thinking it might be a way for folks to combine with your monthly 10 book challenge and read some of the authors BHB mentions but doesn't list specific titles for. But we can delete the category if you think it's best. :O)
