Copper Beach (Dark Legacy, #1) by Jayne Ann Krentz
2/6/12 ★★★★

This is the first of the Dark Legacy books and whilst is draws heavily on the world created in the Arcane Society novels, it is not part of that world. There are people with talent that is, paranormal or psychic talent, in this case to do with stones & gems and books.

Our h, Abby Radcliffe, is a specialist in the hot book trade (not stolen but radiating hot psy energy) and everyone wants to hire her or blackmail her or kidnap her to locate and unlock a particular 40yr old scientific logbook. A very dangerous logbook.

Enter our H, Sam Coppersmith, a hot rock specialist, who is part of Coppersmith Inc and who also works for the Govt solving paranormal crimes.

Really enjoyed this new spin off and the excerpt for Crystal Gardens, Amanda Quick, looks equally as good.

Glad to hear it is good (not that I didn't expect that), now I have something to look forward to next year when it comes out in PB...

Cathy Galloway | 140 comments I finished reading Storm Front (The Dresden Files, #1) by Jim Butcher and am giving it 5 stars. I loved the mix of mystery, magic and humor (usually at his own expense). I already have the next book from the library, so I can continue the series right away.

message 59: by Sandra, Kindle Operator Licence Required (new)

Sandra | 25912 comments Glad you enjoyed it Cathy, that was one series I just couldn't get into.

message 60: by Sandra, Kindle Operator Licence Required (new)

Sandra | 25912 comments I'm about half way through Touch of Frost (Mythos Academy, #1) by Jennifer Estep and I'm really enjoying it, which is good cause I've already got the next one. No angsty teens here.

message 61: by Miss (new)

Miss | 259 comments Yesterday, 02/6 I finished Angelfire and gave it 2 stars. It was a typical YA read, with the averagely attractive girl and mysterious boy who is in love with her. The writing was very very simplistic and unpolished, the heroine was annoying and a spoiled rich girl snob. She's also The Chosen One but in spite of that terribly inept and her Guardian/love interest is nothing but a zombiefied caricature who exists only to serve, worship and protect her. He's also not worthy of loving her of course. The action scenes were really bad, she's no sword-vielding

message 62: by Miss (new)

Miss | 259 comments (continued) Kate Daniels, but a child with overinflated ego. There is a scene where they are fighting a powerful bad guy and at one point he impaled in some metal bars and temporarily immobilized and instead of finishing him off with her powerful angelfire swords they just run away.(major exercise in frustration)
Positives: it's a fast read and the mythology is interesting though poorly constructed. As another reviewer said, the author needs a good editor and working on her dialogue among other things. I don't think I'll read the next in the series.

Sandra | 25912 comments Thanks Miss, comprehensive review, I'll be giving it a miss, thanks for being our guinea pig :D

And with that we have completed 4 of the 5 Supernatural reads and 1 Free Space.

Its me to finish my Supernatural read - 65% done so it will be tomorrow for sure, unless I stay up all night like usual. LOL

So get to reading those Free Space books before we have another shelf posted on Sat/Sun depending on where you are :D

You're in for a treat as that series only gets better. I personally didn't really like the first 2 books that much but starting at book 4 I was hooked!

Some people do like it though and I've read worse YA, but I guess I lost patience with these books. YA seems to be the most clichéd, unoriginal genre right now.
There are some exceptional YA books though so I haven't given up entirely on them.

Miss | 259 comments I'm reading The Body Finder for the Supernatural shelf now and it's good so far. :)

I'm not a YA fan at all. So it was surprising to me that I really enjoyed Touch of Frost.

Sandra | 25912 comments Supernatural Shelf
Touch of Frost (Mythos Academy, #1) by Jennifer Estep
2/8/12 ★★★★★

So a YA book and I've given it 5 stars, that's just plain unheard of.

Gwen Frost, a 17 yr old Gypsy is sent to the Mythos Academy following the death of her mother. The Mythos Academy is a little different. Every pupil is either a Spartan, Valkyrie, Amazon or other amazing warrior type, except for Gwen. Weapons training is mandatory and of course, Gwen sucks at that.

The reason for the Mythos Academy is to train up the new young warriors that must defeat the Reapers, servants of the God Loki, the God of Chaos. All the other Gods & Goddesses banded together and led by Nike, defeated Loki in times past. But he has been working on escaping from his prison and uses the Reapers to that end.

Don't want to say too much or it'll give it all away, but I seriously really, really enjoyed this book. Maybe because I always enjoyed Clash of the Titans which JE said inspired her to write this series.

There isn't a lot I can say in this review that won't spoil, so I'll say I'm happy the triangle is gone, it was interesting to learn about Incubi and you might need a tissue near the end of the book.

message 92: by Miss (new)

Miss | 259 comments I'll be reading Hunt the Moon (Cassandra Palmer, #5) by Karen Chance for the Ghosts shelf.

Also, i've finished reading The Body Finder (The Body Finder, #1) by Kimberly Derting and gave it 3.5 stars.

This was a fast and enjoyable read and it would have been a higher rating if by the end of the book the main character's thoughts would not have sunk to judgemental and mean observations of her fellow students, of her school etc.
For the first part of the book, Violet obsesses over Jay, her childhood best friend turned hunk extraordinaire over the summer and is being jealous of other girls. Once she gets her man, she starts seeing those same girls as artificial bimbos or lapdogs, her school homecoming dance decorations are tacky and so on. Very annoying. There is a serial killer out there and a murder investigation but its way in the background.
I liked Jay's character and the fact that they were best friends since childhood. Plus the premise of the book was interesting.

Well, I would but I'm 9 hrs ahead of you and I plan to read it tomorrow my time :)

How about we read it and chat about it :D

I'll try grabbing some quotes as I go. I'm usually really bad at that but it does make it more interesting.

Diane ~Firefly~ | 913 comments I decided to start Pleasure of a Dark Prince (Immortals After Dark, #9) by Kresley Cole for the ghosts shelf. Be interesting to find out if there are actually ghosts in the book.

message 99: by Cathy (new)

Cathy Galloway | 140 comments I finished my free space book Darkness Unbound (Dark Angels, #1) by Keri Arthur . I give it 4 stars. I have read the Riley Jensen series where the character is first introduced and really liked them. It is now 25 years later, but the basic world building is the same. She doesn't spend a lot of time on it, so it could be confusing for readers who didn't read the earlier series. I didn't like some of the fight scenes or the way the book ended. Those things kept me from giving the book 5 stars.

message 100: by Emily (new)

Emily | 109 comments I just finished Legacy of Lies & Don't Tell (Dark Secrets, #1) by Elizabeth Chandler . I really didnt enjoy the first story at all and it was very hard for me to force myself to finish reading it. It was very typical for the storyline. I enjoyed the second story. It had a bit of mystery and it kept you thinking. I wish it would have been a book by itself and possible expanded on. I will give it a 3. I will not be adding the second in this series to read.
