AH It's doing the same thing for me too. I think I will call Chapters and get them to fix it anyway, warranty or not. They want to sell those ereaders and if they have unhappy campers, they wont be able to.

I will probably contact them in the next week to at least let them know that its happening. Maybe they'll be able to fix it.

message 153: by Susan (new)

Susan lot of my friends have kindle or the Libre (?) - but the new kindle (which I've only had for 2 weeks) is GREAT - especially because we (other buds) can share .pdf documents - I have tons of books to read now !

Regina (reginar) You can also sign on to each other's account and share amazon books.

Literary Ames (amyorames) | 276 comments Recent ebook/ereader news:

Ebook sales of the sci-fi/fantasy and romance genres are overtaking print sales! I'm betting this is due to those embarrassing romance covers and as stated "early adopters" of new technology which I think maybe be a nice way of saying "geeks" and "nerds". LOL!

Agency pricing of ebooks has hit UK shores with Hachette being the first publisher to implement this last week but all ready retailers are reluctant/protesting it. Their books have all ready been removed from major retailer's websites including the Book Depository.

I'm waiting to see what happens as agency pricing has all ready been declared illegal in the UK -it's basically price-fixing and breaks EU law. More info on Agency Pricing in the UK
Ten things about the agency model in the UK.

WH Smiths's has a 50% off sale on the Top 100 eBooks and are competing with Amazon's prices. These two are seen as the cheapest UK-based companies to buy from.

The Kindle Store: number of books - US vs UK
US = Over 700,000 books Vs. UK = Over 400,000 books

Google Editions -An Update. This store was supposed to open by June 2010 but now they're not sure when it will be launched.

Is all piracy bad piracy? states that piracy can increase an author's popularity and increase sales. An interesting notion.

Finally, something dangerously stupid but funny: When not to read a Kindle

message 156: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) Thank you for sharing! I love the first point you make, lol! That is likely true! I also think we all tend to read through UF/PNR/Sci Fi/Fantasy/Romance alot faster! I am guessing erotica sales are way up and beat print sales in the erotica category too!

Very cool links -- and I am so hoping that UK laws help end the stupid agency pricing thing.

message 157: by Literary Ames (new)

Literary Ames (amyorames) | 276 comments Very true, we do read them a lot faster and about erotica -no one wants to be caught reading one of them!

Literary Ames (amyorames) | 276 comments Not sure if this has been posted but I've just been going through my bookmarks and found an eBook price comparison website: http://www.inkmesh.com

Regina (reginar) I have posted it but it is such an awesome site it should be reposted! I check that one daily!

Literary Ames (amyorames) | 276 comments Christmas advertising has begun. They're all ready selling mince pies! Anyway I just spotted a children's ereader called Storio.

The Nook I believe you have a set period of time and you can return for a restocking fee. And now there is also the Kobo from Borders. If you are a big reader, I recommend it. :)"

so, ive been looking into it and im so tempted to buy it now. i think that i will try it and if i dont like it, u said that i can try for 30 days and if not like i can return, i think ill try.

message 162: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) So Amazon just announced that it is now allowing lending in the same manner the Nook does: Lending

Although I prefer the account sharing option through Amazon (you can do it temporarily and I have done it several times with friends/family members). But it is nice that Amazon will be offering this.

message 163: by Annabel (new)

Annabel (boekenwormmom) I'm still reading normal books, we do have a e-reader at home but I don't know I don't think it's my thing

message 164: by AH (new)

AH Annabel, I also have both. But that ereader is so convenient when you travel. I have over 100 books at my fingertips. You can't do that with books.

message 165: by Annabel (new)

Annabel (boekenwormmom) that's so true that is the reason I'm considering getting one, but I don't know I'm not there yet maybe one day I will haha

message 166: by Irene (new)

Irene Hollimon | 50 comments I currently have a Sony eReader which I love. I preordered one of those Cruz tablets. I've been hoping to get it soon so I can write a review. The company said it should ship in late October but it hasn't shipped yet. They've got until this Sunday if they want to ship it in late October. So far, I don't have a real hopeful feeling about this. I don't know when I'm going to get the tablet.

GinBee (jennymbee) | 4468 comments Mod
@ Irene, what is the Cruz tablet?

Is it another ereader or more like the Ipad? The thing I'd most like to know though is what type of screen it has, e-ink or like a computer - makes a big difference to reading.

I've read ebooks on my laptop which I found hard work but now I've got my Sony (PRS-300 model that's just been replaced) with e-ink techonolgy I can read ebooks fine.

message 168: by Irene (new)

Irene Hollimon | 50 comments The Cruz tablet is being put out by Borders. It has a color LCD screen and internet capability. It also is supposed to read PDFs and all the other formats my Sony does. I hope I'll be getting a lot with the Cruz tablet and only sacrificing eInk.

message 169: by Mariya (new)

Mariya (cr6zym0nkeyiz) so after 24 hours wit my kindle, i offcially have converted to the world of ebooks and ereaders.

But isn't eInk the main advantage of an ereader?

message 172: by AH (new)

AH Personally, I like the e-ink. It's easier on the eyes, I can read in the sun, it feels like a book.

Exactly my thinking AH!

What do other ebook owners think? Do you like e-ink or would you be prepared to read on an LCD screen etc?

haha. stupid fed ex hasnt delivered it when i had gotten hom, i think it was about like 6pm i got it that day and too tired to read, buti added books, wifi connection adn all that stuff, and i started reading it, and couldnt stop...much more confortable reading in bed. wit a paperback or hardback i always have to strech my arms and fingers after a certain amount of time...

but 24 hours probally not. probally after i started reading on it...so within 30-45 minutes...haha.

I really like my Sony, but I still read paperbacks too. I've been wondering if it's worth getting a Kindle too as some of the books I want are only available on Amazon in the UK. It's changing every day though it seems. I think we are a little behind! Can buy from quite a few US or international sites too.

message 176: by AH (new)

AH Jen, I'd wait before purchasing a second reader. I think that the industry may undergo some changes in the next little while and we may see some standardization to one type of format. It happened with Betamax and VHS, it will happen in ebooks. But that's my opinion...

message 177: by GinBee, Founder & Mod (new)

GinBee (jennymbee) | 4468 comments Mod
AH, I just hope I don't get stuck with Betamax!!

Maybe there will be a breakthrough device that covers the Kindle, Sony, Kobo, Nook and whatever else formats etc?

message 178: by Regina (last edited Oct 28, 2010 12:13PM) (new)

Regina (reginar) I personally prefer e-ink. I stare at a computer screen all day and I also am always looking at my iPhone (and reading off it). So for me, I prefer reading on e-ink. But I am sure other people feel different.

I actually do not think there will be a resolution very soon as to format. Just b/c the industry is still new and the parties are very invested and powerful (i.e. Amazon, Apple, Sony). And readers/consumers do not seem to be demanding any one format -- in fact, consumers appear to be buying from multiple formats (especially those with iPads, Androids and iPhones and are using Apps to read from) and there are quite a few consumers who have multiple ereaders. So I do not think any ereader vendor at the moment needs to make a switch in format or encompass other formats. I think a change would only come when vendors are responding to consumer demands represented by low purchases, etc -- and that is not happening.

message 179: by AH (new)

AH I think it may be epub, but I'm just a person who reads, not a psychic.

message 180: by Mariya (new)

I would not have taken to my ereader if it did not have e-ink. I start at a computer all day too!

message 182: by Mariya (new)

Mariya (cr6zym0nkeyiz) i think that is so cool. like when i got it, i was like is that plastic or something over my screen. it looks just like paper. absolutely amazing. i was really worried at first that reading on the ereader would be just like reading off my computer, but yea. i was completely wrong. its 10X better.

message 183: by Samantha (new)

Samantha Mullins (hixxup79) I can read books on my phone I just found out, I have a motoral I1 and right now I am reading Midnight Sun on it and it's pretty convenient at times, I might continue to read book on it, but I still love my good old hard copies, but I do like it that I can read no matter where I am at.

Alisha (schalazeal) | 28 comments Jen ~ theMagicFaerie wrote: "What do other ebook owners think? Do you like e-ink or would you be prepared to read on an LCD screen etc?"

For me, the majority of why I love my reader is its e-Ink display (the rest is portability). With as much as I read, I'd be cross-eyed staring at a computer screen all day and night long. That eye strain is no joke! :o)

Take care all. Kim

Yay, I just bought a Kindle! Or rather, my father did since it's my Christmas present, but I had to help him get everything right. I'm super excited and can't wait for it to arrive! Sadly, it won't be until January, but I'll probably have enough pockets to devour until then.

I've never really been sure whether I'd want an e-reader or not, ever since my friend got one for her birthday recently. I used to be completely against it, not wanting to betray my beloved pockets and hated the idea of not being able to hold a real book, but after trying hers out (she has two now, one DX as well) and using the free Kindle for PC application from Amazon, I had to admit I'd changed my mind.

I just wanted to share! As I said before, I'm super excited!

message 187: by Mariya (new)

Mariya (cr6zym0nkeyiz) Yah! I know you'll love it. I was also that way. I didn't think I would like as much as I did, b/c I love the feel of holding a print book, but I love the kindle even more and it is 100X easier on the eyes, I love that part. and lots more extras as well.

message 188: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm sure I will! I already love the ones my friend owns. Not sure how my economy will survive though, I'm sure I'll buy even more books when it only takes one click!

message 189: by Jen (new)

Jen (jenlr) I'm new to the group and new to eReaders! I have the Laputa Reader App on my Droid Incredible; you can get a lot of good free books on there and not just classics!! I highly recommend checking it out if you have Android! My newest 'toy' is my 2 day old NookColor, which I LOVE! I'm definitely going to check out some of the links everyone posted in this thread so thanks in advance for the tips!

Literary Ames (amyorames) | 276 comments Has anyone tried the Google eBookstore? Apparently it launched on the 6th December and is only available to those in the US. It's coming to Europe next year.

I can't even view the books available and their prices because I live in the UK but I was just wondering about anyone's opinion on it so far.

message 191: by Mariya (new)

Mariya (cr6zym0nkeyiz) I'll check it out. I have never heard of it before or didnt knoe google had a ebookstore.

It was originally going to be called "Google Editions" which has been in the works for years. You may have heard of it in connection with all the enormous legal troubles it's had with copyrights and authors objecting.

message 193: by Jen (new)

Jen (jenlr) I just took a random book and checked prices. It's the same price for Barnes and nobles, amazon and Google.

Francesca the Fierce (Under the Covers Book Blog) | 25 comments I just bought a Samsung Galaxy Tablet, does anyone on here use that device for reading their books? Any comments? It runs on the Android platform so I know there's a Kindle app for it.

message 196: by Jen (last edited Dec 15, 2010 11:51AM) (new)

Jen (jenlr) I don't have the g.tab but I have an android phone and if its the same you can also download the nook app and the laputa reader app. And I'm sure you can use the new Google ebook reader.

Francesca the Fierce (Under the Covers Book Blog) | 25 comments I'll have to look into those then, thanks!

message 198: by Tracy T. (new)

Tracy T. Well my Kobo keeps freezing and not even restoring the device does anything. I was thinking about calling and seeing what they can do about it, but the screen is cracked and frankly, I don't know if I would want a new one if it acts like this after only 6 months. I did pay $150 for it, but I read close to 150 books on it, so I got my moneys worth.

Most of my ebooks are in epub, but I'm thinking about buying the Kindle to replace it. I can always convert the files to mobi.

message 199: by AH (new)

AH Tracy -Does the freezing have anything to do with the cracked screen? I got my Kobo in May and the only problems I have with it is that the page forward button is a little depressed.
