Vi Week 1: ♬ Battlescars by Guy Sebastian feat. Lupe Fiasco (2012)

Captain's Fury (Codex Alera, #4) by Jim Butcher

Book Title:Captain's Fury by Jim Butcher
Date Finished:6 Jan 2013
Rating: ★★★★
Review: This is a good addition to the Codex Alera series. Tavi's growth has been credible to an extent though I wished he'd remain the same as the first few books. The developments in the book were expected. The secondary characters are getting fleshed out and I wish Kitai would get more screen time. I so want to learn more about her. I'm definitely going to finish the series.

Lina | 5563 comments Skin Deep (I-Team, #5.5) by Pamela Clare
Book: Skin Deep by Pamela Clare
Rating: ★★★
Finished: 06-01-13
Review: I really enjoy this author's writing style usually, but didn't enjoy this as much as I was hoping for. This is a wonderful premise for a book, but the relationship between Megan and Nate felt so forced, so rushed and so predictable, that it lost it's charm. I was captivated by Nate's backstory, the effect his scars had on his life and his confidence. I was equally intrigued Megan's past and her constant struggle to be who she is today, and her love for her little girl. I didn't really feel like a lot of their issues were resolved satisfactorily, but I enjoyed the way the tale was told.

Individual points for this week: 12
Shelf: Page 5 on the Military Romance shelf (1 point)
Cover: Dogtags (2 points)
Plot: Scarring of hero is significant to plot. (3 points)
Setting: Published in 2012 (6 points)

Book:Sand Dollar: A Story of Undying Love by Sebastian Cole
Rating:★★★1/2
Finished:January 6, 2013

Review: This is not normally my kind of book. But surprisingly enjoyed it. It was a tear jerker and I found myself grabbing for the tissues. I've seen other compare it to the Notebook meets the paranormal and it is pretty accurate description. I will definitely check out more books by Mr. Cole.

Carrie (icanhasbooks) Week 1: ♬ Battlescars by Guy Sebastian feat. Lupe Fiasco (2012)

Book: Her Forbidden Hero (The Hero, #1) by Laura Kaye by Laura Kaye
Finished Jan 7th
Rating:★★★★
Review:Alyssa has known Marco all of her life, looked up to him, respected him, loved him. Marco always looked at Alyssa like she was a little girl, she's the kid sister of his best friend, he's known her all his life. Never once had he thought of her other then that of a kid, it's only now that she's working with him that he (and all males around) can see that this little girl is definitely all grown up. When Alyssa looks at him she still sees the Marco she knew, not thinking that things/people change, Marco has changed. After coming back early from the War in Afghanistan he isn't truly 100% the same. He has nightmares, he is more closed off. He is scared both emotionally and physically. But with Alyssa around he starts to feel like the man he use to be.

Individual points

Shelf= 1 point (Pg 4 Military Romance)
Plot= 3 points (Marco is scared both emotionally and physically)
Setting= 6 points (Pub 2012)
Total= 10 points

message 76: by Lina (new)

Lina | 5563 comments We do Carrie. Try refreshing the page. I had to redo them, sorry :-(

message 77: by Vi (new)

Vi OK Team - I just took a look at the spreadsheet and we have one of the normal team totals. I didn't actually realize individual scores counted towards the team total. I apologize.

As the other teams were discussing, finishing early doesn't always matter if we can squeeze the most number of points for each person i.e it depends on our choice of book. The theoretical maximum right now is 21 but I'm not sure if we can hit that consistently. What do you think?

message 78: by Vi (new)

Vi Yay! Thanks, CaroB!

Lina | 5563 comments Vi wrote: "OK Team - I just took a look at the spreadsheet and we have one of the normal team totals. I didn't actually realize individual scores counted towards the team total. I apologize.

As the other tea..."

I think you're right, book choice trumps speed in this comp.

message 80: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 337 comments I think that 21 is a tall order that may be nearly impossible. We definitely should try aiming for as high as we possibly can. The problem comes in with accessibility to books etc

message 81: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 337 comments Should we aim for a minimum goal of points per person. I agree that the speed bonus is not going to make a huge difference it comes down to book choice.

message 82: by Carrie (new)

Carrie (icanhasbooks) It would be nice if we could do both, a larger number of points + speedy reading. Be nice to suggest the songs :)

message 83: by Lina (new)

Lina | 5563 comments Let's aim for nothing lower than 10 points. 12 should be quite doable, but again, it all depends if I have the book on hand... I wont be able to buy the book I need every week.

message 84: by Vi (new)

Vi Melissa, i agree. It'll be interesting to see how many get 21 points at the end of the party.

CaroB, 12 seems to be a good target. Lets test it in the next round. We could aim to get at least 60 the next round. It'll help us catching up to the other teams.

message 85: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 337 comments 12 sounds good to me. It seems like year published is a big one so that one is a good start.

message 86: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 337 comments I hope we get to suggest the songs at least once.

Carrie (icanhasbooks) Just wanted to give you a heads up, we are having a pretty bad storm so if you don't hear from me for right away when the song is called it's mostly likely because of the power being gone. Will post as soon as it comes back if that happens.

Susan (susayq ~) (susayq) | 6062 comments Stay safe, Carrie! I spoke to my mom today and she says it's flooding at her house right now. They've had 8-12 inches of rain in the last couple of days. Schools have been closed and everything.

OTOH, I'm going for a dinner and a movie with my friend. I will be back home well after Mr.Elf announcing our next song.
