I know I'm not part of this team but your book interested me Karla. What did you think of it?

message 303: by Jane (new)

Jane | 705 comments Unfortunately after reading lots in the beginning of the week I haven't read anything since. I am now going to push myself to finish a book before Dewey's Read-a-Thon starts tomorrow.

What did you think of this one, Evana? It looks good!"

This is a YA read about a southern girl who lives near DC so her area is constantly overrun by Yankees. She meets JEB Stuart and John Mosby several times during their operations and her brothers ride for them. I thought it was well written and the characters believable. One thing that happens at the end I wasn't sure could have happened that way, but perhaps. Overall, I would recommend it for those who like YA and are interested in the Civil War from the perspective of a civilian who was daily impacted by it.

Are you doing Dewey's? I thought about it, but with our group RAT coming so close on its heels I chickened out. I'd be happy to cheer you on!

Steven (gallifreyan1218) | 5272 comments Karla and Zara -- there is a movie series based off of those books. I've seen the first one because my mom loves those movies. :)

Zara's Retreat Steven wrote: "Karla and Zara -- there is a movie series based off of those books. I've seen the first one because my mom loves those movies. :)"

Hi Steven,

I've seen the movie series of these books and they were extremely disappointing. They didn't follow the books at all well and in fact added things that weren't in the original books. I had to go back and re-read the books after I'd seen the series to replace what I'd seen in the series. I wouldn't recommend watching the series at all.

message 308: by Steven (new)

Steven (gallifreyan1218) | 5272 comments AH, I hate when movies deviate too much from the books.

I haven't read the books and have only seen most of the first one while my mom was watching it.

Just further proof that reading trumps movies!

Reading does indeed trump movies.

Barb Evana wrote: "Overall, I would recommend it for those who like YA and are interested in the Civil War from the perspective of a civilian who was daily impacted by it. "

Thanks, Evana. I don't read a lot of YA, but I read some. My whole family is "into" the Civil War era, so I'm going to have to add this book to my TBR list :)

message 313: by Alba (new)

Alba | 9 comments Sorry for being quiet on the board lately, I have been offered some more hours at work now the Twins are at nursery, and it has just been crazy busy. Seriously, I was that busy yesterday, I had a cup of tea with my breakfast, and then didn't have another drink until 4pm. How bad is that :(

Anyhoo, so I'm struggling abit with Outlander (Outlander, #1) by Diana Gabaldon , I keep getting distracted and going off to do other things after afew pages. Not good, So I'm going to leave it on my night stand for now and read Darkfever (Fever, #1) by Karen Marie Moning instead, because I've heard alot of things about this Author, but never actually read any of her books.

How is everyone else getting on? It seems quiet around here. Maybe everyone is busy reading, reading, reading...

message 314: by Barb (new)

Barb We seem to go in spurts with our chatter here, don't know if that's good or bad :) I finished another book this morning, then had to scurry around to make the treats for this afternoon's book group meeting and gather together my notes. Now I'm trying to wade through emails and GR posts before I leave for the discussion.

Another GR group that I'm in has a RaT starting at midnight tonight, so I hope to get in a lot of reading over the weekend :)

That's one of my all-time favorites! Now I'm going to have those songs stuck in my head for the rest of the day :)

JanBreesmom (goodreadscomjanbreesmom) | 55 comments I haven't got in as much reading in the past few weeks as I would have liked...sometimes I find I just need a break...hoping to get back in the swing of things. After reading two books quickly, one after the other, I found myself starting 4 and putting them down after a couple of chapters because I just couldn't get into them. Hopefully things will pick up now.

message 325: by Barb (new)

Barb Been there, done that, Jan! Sometimes it's a matter of finding the genre that's "just right" for the mood I'm in. Yes, I admit it ... I'm a moody reader!

Yeah, Barb. That's exactly it! Had to switch from paranormal romance novels to food--reading 'Gulp' by Mary Roach right now as well as purchasing 'The Science of Cooking' to leisurely peruse as a cookbook/food info book.

message 328: by Barb (new)

Barb Right now, I'm on a cozy mystery kick -- which works well for this team thing, since they're usually short and easy to read :) I have quite a few stacked up, calling out "pick me, pick ME!"

I like mysteries, too. Who are your favorite mystery writers and who are you reading now?

message 330: by Barb (new)

Barb Oh boy, that's a really good question LOL Favorite mystery authors would have to include Laura Childs, Cleo Coyle, Elly Griffiths, P.J. Tracy, Mary Jane Clark and her mother-in-law Mary Higgins Clark, Leslie Meier, Carola Dunn, Catherine Coulter...

I used to really like Sue Grafton, Joanne Fluke and Diane Mott Davidson, but (for different reasons), those series don't appeal to me as much as they used to. Mind you, I still *read them -- especially Grafton, as she's almost done with the alphabet LOL -- but I don't run out to get them the day new books are released.

Right now, for a challenge in another group, I've been reading books that have books, libraries/librarians and/or bookstores/booksellers on the cover, in the title or in the story. So far, I've read The Sign Of The Book, by John Dunning and Classified as Murder, by Miranda James. Next up is Buried in a Book, by Lucy Arlington, and Double-Booked for Death, by Ali Brandon. Both are the first books in new-to-me series, but they've been on my TBR list for what seems like forever.

Not sure what I'll pick up when I finish those two, but I've got quite a stack of library books that are due back in a week, so I need to get reading :)

message 331: by Barb (new)

Barb Who do you recommend, Jan? I shy away from the hard-core and really graphic stuff, but I know a lot of readers who love those books!

I'm also hooked on some thriller authors: Steve Berry, David Baldacci, Joseph Finder and author:John Grisham|721] (although not ALL of his books) are the first to come to mind.

I liked the book. I saw the whole movie series a couple weeks ago and really liked them (the first movie being my fave) and decided to read the books. There were a lot of differences between the the book and the movie, but I liked them both.

I will love a bit of cheering. My updates are on my blog Jane's Book Blog

Sallie(GeorgiaGirl) (shuga) | 775 comments Good morning everyone - didnt mean to leave everyone wondering where I was off too...Our trip to Indinapolis Indiana did not go as planned. We got to the hospital @ 8:00 am on Monday morning & all went well from there until they came out an hour into the procedure to tell me they were not able to do the surgery due to the fact that the one blockage would not allow them to go thru & the other blockage is in a 180 degree turn off the 1st blockage. If they tried to to force through the blockage they would risk closing the artery closing off altogether causing another heart attack or worse a stroke etc. We thought we would go home on Tues but Jimmy had a bad night with chest pain so intense they had to put him a nitro drip IV. So that meant another day in the hospital so we finally got to the leave the hospital @ 4:00pm on Wednesday afternoon & then we had a 2 1/2 hour drive home. We made it fine after we stopped & ate @ our favorite restaurant "The Weber Grill" in downtown Indy we headed home. I had to be back to work @ 7:30am on Thurs. He's doing ok but not able to do alot as the chest pain kicks in & just about doubles him in half. The Drs are hoping that the medicine that they have upped dosages on will do the trick so we live with it this way. Not much of a choice because the risk procedures that the Drs could do are too scary...heart attack, stroke, blood clot etc. The cure pretty well scares the pants off me more so than the actual chest pain. I worry about him but I dont baby him. I could not make thru it all of this without my "book friends" & my "book friends on GR". Thanks for always being there for me.

I did finish a couple of books while I was just waiting around the hospital...

I've read that one, and it's one of my favorite series :) I know I've read the second, and maybe the third as well, I'd have to look at my list to be sure. Thanks, though, Evana!

Sallie(GeorgiaGirl) (shuga) | 775 comments thanks everyone for the well wishes...we are doing fine. Except I have taken over more responsibility at home now like mowing the yard...OMG would it be easier if I just bought a couple of goats one for the back & one for the front? Think my neighbors would mind? I could paint them pink so they looked liked flamingos only with 4 legs?
naw didnt think so but it sure was a good idea I think...lol

LOL LOL Sallie You need to find a young-ish neighborhood kid who will do it for you for a small fee. The trick is getting the young ones, who are just starting, 'cause they don't usually charge as much as the older kids :)

I think I have to wait till June, so I don't violate the terms of another challenge I'm in. We vowed not to read anything for three months except what was already on our library holds list or in our possession at the time the challenge started. I'm two months into it, and I'm not going to blow it now :)

Besides, I still have to finish The King's Deception!

message 349: by Steven (new)

Steven (gallifreyan1218) | 5272 comments Well, at least by then the newest James Rollins comes out (June 18th) so you will have an extra one in the series to read :D
