Since the Mod changed my reading account on the spreadsheet since I reached my goal from 60 to 63, do i also need to change my goal on my home page?

You may, if you want, Nancy. It would make it easier on us. Thanks!

Nicole Field (nicolefield) | 1778 comments Hi guys, I'm in Melbourne so I'm not too worried about the fires where we are. We had our big one a couple of years back.

Very worried about Lisa, and Karen too.

message 1657: by Steven (new)

Steven (gallifreyan1218) | 5272 comments Thanks for checking in Nicole!

Lisa - (Aussie Girl) | 6399 comments Yes, I'm fine too. Thanks so much for the concern.

The fires are on the outskirts of Sydney, The Blue Mountains and in the Newcastle area about 140 kms away. I live only 8kms from Sydney city but the smoke haze is incredible. Yesterday was a hot day but luckily everybody got through it without loss of property and life.

We have a property in the country so I have lived through close fires before and my husband has fought them, it is absolutely terrifying but a part of living in Australia. My heart goes out to all affected.

Lisa - (Aussie Girl) | 6399 comments Great to have Kayla back too.

Diane L Tonight I finished The Angel's Game by Carlos Ruiz Zafon, 531 pages. I have to say I didn't like this sequel as well as I liked the first book, The Shadow of the Wind.

I really want to read The Shadow of the Wind! Need to get my hands on a copy!

message 1663: by Jane (new)

Jane | 705 comments I have finished 3 books since we finished Banshee. They are all 3 from the same series Cindy Eller by Elizabeth A Reeves
They are okay. Quick reads, funny and romantic. One of the things that annoys me is that for every book I read they get shorter.

How (Not) to Kiss a Prince 300 pages

How (Not) to Kiss a Beast 208 pages

How (Not) to Kiss a Ghost 184 pages

Jane | 705 comments @ Steven, I have a question.

You mentioned we have quite a few cupcakes ( I think you have all done great to earn us those as we can see they are valuable) but am I right in thinking there are 4 different kinds?

1 = ordinary to redeem as book
2 = chunkster to redeem as two books for books over 450 pages
3 = triple to redeem as three books for books over ? pages
4 = Cutthroat Competitor Cupcakes to redeem for ? books over 1250 pages.

I actually think we have been told this before but I have an adled ( is that even a word?) brain at the moment so can't really think straight.

Is it okay to ask how many of each we have?

message 1665: by Steven (new)

Steven (gallifreyan1218) | 5272 comments Of course!

I just went through these again today, to get a count of how many we have, as I was planning on posting about them this evening :)

We have 32 bouncing cupcakes available to turn in. These are for books over 112,500 words/450 pages, and allow the book to count twice (thus 1 BAP, as the book itself counts once already).

We have 9 Triple Threat cupcakes available to turn in. These are for books over 200,000 words/800 pages and allow the book to count three times (thus 2 BAPs, as the book itself counts once already).

We have 5 Cutthroat Competitor cupcakes available to turn in. These are for books over 350,000 words/1400 pages and allow the book to count five times (thus 4 BAPs, as the book itself counts once already).

You can clarify with Countess Paige in the Page Counts thread if you're not sure what counts due to word count, and you can check AR Bookfinder to find some word counts beforehand... but it doesn't have everything listed.

If you're going to specifically read something to use one of the cupcakes, please let me know once you're finished! I normally have to discover them when going through your posted books to check page counts for the challenge updates anyways, but sometimes I miss some!!!

message 1666: by Steven (new)

Steven (gallifreyan1218) | 5272 comments Oh, the other two kinds, regular cupcakes and blinkie cupcakes, are useful in regards to filling in gaps in the Mod challenges, but not for anything else... so now that there are no more mod challenges, they're pretty much worthless... but they didn't give BAPs or actually add a book to our shelves, so we never used any of them.

Jane | 705 comments Thanks Steven. I am just now reading Percy Jackson and the Sword of Hades and I will also read The Colorado Kid this weekend, unfortunately even though my edition says 184 pages it has been unapproved in pagecount. After that I want to read The Son Of Neptune 500+ pages.

I want to read the Sword of Hades, but it's a Europe only thing, I think! At least, I haven't been able to get my hands on a copy anywhere!

message 1676: by Steven (new)

Steven (gallifreyan1218) | 5272 comments Good work Nancy! Though fifty shades might not have felt like work while reading! Hehehe

I finished my ARC of White Fire by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child tonight. Holy cow. So good!

I am thinking Summer Knight by Jim Butcher is next!

Summer Knight is one of my favorites in the series! I'm so glad you're hooked!

message 1680: by Diane L (new)

Diane L I completed Morality Play by Barry Unsworth, 208 pages.

I have started Miss Julia Speaks Her Mind for our chain game.

message 1681: by Karla (new)

Karla I've finished Victoria and the Rogue by Meg Cabot last night and started Confessions of a Bad Teacher The Shocking Truth from the Front Lines of American Public Education by John Owens this morning.

message 1682: by Barb (new)

Barb I finished The Ghost and Mrs. McClure (Haunted Bookshop Mystery, #1) by Alice Kimberly   The Ghost and Mrs. McClure after work today, and can't figure out why I waited so long to start this series!

Next up is The Final Cut by Catherine Coulter   The Final Cut, the first in a new series by Catherine Coulter and J.T. Ellis. I've not yet read any of Ellis's books, but I love Coulter's FBI series -- and two of my favorite characters from that series make an appearance in this book -- so I'm expecting great things!

message 1683: by Nicole (new)

Nicole Field (nicolefield) | 1778 comments I'm going to be reading The Ship of Destiny next month, which I believe is 800+ pages, so one of those cupcakes can be for me ;) It would be nice to have it count three times.

message 1684: by Jane (new)

Jane | 705 comments I have finished Percy Jackson and the Sword of Hades. I have only given it 3 stars.

The Percy short story was good and deserved a 4 but unfortunately it was together with Horrible Histories Groovy Greeks wich I didn't like.

According to goodreads this book is 196 pages but I don' quite believe it as they are 79 + 71 pages so I am going to ask for approval in pagenumbers

okay! that's a shame you didn't like it as much. I need to get my hands on that somehow, but i think it was Europe-released only. :(

I liked the Percy Jackson story and if as I expect the book is not approved I might change editions so I review the 2 books separately.

I don''t know but on the inside cover it says it was specially written and published for world book 2009 and it mentions UK and Ireland so you are most likely right.

Apparently it's in Rick Riordan's The Demigod Files, which I got from a very good friend today! :)

message 1688: by [deleted user] (new)

Didn't like Whiskey Beach by Nora Roberts so now i'm reading The Luxe (Luxe, #1) by Anna Godbersen .

message 1689: by Jane (new)

Jane | 705 comments @ Steven. Yes I read a review that said that, all that is missing is one page. A report card from summer camp, a silly wee thing.

Right it is now 2.45 am with me and I have done nothing but read the last 7 hours, this means I have finished The Son of Neptune 513 pages. I better go to sleep now :-)

message 1690: by Steven (new)

Steven (gallifreyan1218) | 5272 comments I told you Son of Neptune was great! The next two are even better!!!

Nancy, sorry your Nora Roberts book wasn't good. But glad you found one to move on to :)

message 1691: by [deleted user] (new)

The one i'm reading now is much better then the Nora Roberts. It feels like an easy read for me.

message 1692: by Steven (new)

Steven (gallifreyan1218) | 5272 comments I hate when I start something and I don't feel it working for me!

message 1693: by Barb (last edited Oct 26, 2013 10:16AM) (new)

Barb If a book doesn't hook me in the first couple of chapters, or the first 50 pages, I put it down and move on to something else. Sometimes I'll come back and give it another shot, but more often than not, I just cross it off my list and forget about it!

The days when I *had to read a specific book, and I had to finish it whether I liked it or not, are
l--o--n--g past, and there are too many books out there to waste my reading time on books I'm not enjoying.

message 1694: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm the same way. If i don't like it in the few pages that I have read, then i don't read it again and give it away to the library.

Lisa - (Aussie Girl) | 6399 comments I wish I could be like that! Not me, if I start a book some strange force compels me to finish...

message 1696: by Barb (new)

Barb I think it helps that I get most of my books from the library, or I buy them used (i.e., for very little money), so I don't feel like I'm wasting money if I don't finish a book.

message 1697: by Nicole (new)

Nicole Field (nicolefield) | 1778 comments I'm the exact same way, Barb. There's usually at least one each month. And library books are a great way of finding those things out. Also like Barb, though, I grabbed a couple of Rob Thurman books yesterday for a dollar each. If they aren't great, no big deal ;)

message 1698: by [deleted user] (new)

I get most of my books from the library sale for a dollar or 50 cents so if i don't like it then i don't get upset bout it and just give it back to them to resell.

message 1699: by Sallie(GeorgiaGirl) (new)

Sallie(GeorgiaGirl) (shuga) | 775 comments I hated whiskey beach too...I have luxe so let me know what u think

message 1700: by [deleted user] (new)

I didn't care for Luxe. I was half way through the book and i was losing interest in it.
