Barb Welcome to the team, Lisa! And thanks Lara :)

Karla Welcome Lisa!

Lisa - (Aussie Girl) | 6399 comments Thanks Everyone. This is my first tower team challenge so I'll be learning as I go along but great to be here.

message 457: by Steven (new)

Steven (gallifreyan1218) | 5272 comments Not too much to learn -- I'm new myself (just joined in March) and already captaining a team (yikes!!!). We're on the tail end of a read-a-thon (read a bunch of pages during a set time, and a themed book and a book with our color cover).

Most of the time it's just read and tag your books for the challenge (aka READ READ READ!!!! We have to catch up!!!) We have random events like the read-a-thon to catch a few "book advantages" which are +4 books to our total books read. Other than those, it's really just read and have fun and "hang out" with some cool peeps!

message 458: by Barb (new)

Barb Most of us on the team are kind of wrapped up right now in the read-a-thon that's going on, so we tend to forget to post updates here in this "regular" thread. The RaT ends on Sunday, so we'll make our way back over here soon!

It's too late for you to join in, but it you'd like to see what we've been up to -- or maybe even cheer us on :) -- you can check out our team's RaT progress at Moderator's Read-a-Thon

Lisa - (Aussie Girl) | 6399 comments Thanks guys. I'll be sure to join the next RaT and good luck with this one.

Karla Update on Kayla: She is almost done with a book on Kurt Cobain. She went away for the weekend and has a two hour bus ride, so she will make a dent in her book. She also took another book to read and said she will work on that one this weekend as well.

She is also reading a book for school that will count for the challenge.

message 462: by Steven (new)

Steven (gallifreyan1218) | 5272 comments Awesome! Thanks for the update!

You're welcome

Karla Haven't been able to read today. Three of my nephews came over for a bit. Now I am working on my Mother's Day gift. Putting all of the videos I have taken of my nephews onto a DVD for her. I got the three who can talk to say happy Mother's Day.

Anyway, when I finish that I will get to reading. I have a ton of books from the library!

message 465: by Barb (new)

Barb copied from our team's RaT thread

Yay team! We were one of the four teams to have completed every part of the RaT challenge, so we've been awarded a 2-book bonus for our Tower challenge. Unfortunately, even with the bonus, we've dropped down to 9th place overall, so we have some catching up to do! We're about 30 books behind right now :(

Thanks to our captains for staying on top of our progress and keeping everything updated as the RaT continued :)

message 466: by Diane L (last edited May 13, 2013 06:20AM) (new)

Diane L I finished Original Sin by Beth McMullen Original Sin by Beth McMullen last night. Former spy, now stay-at-home mom who gets dragged back into the action. Funny but too much rough language for me to like it.

I'm working on Neuromancer (Sprawl, #1) by William Gibson Neuromancer by William Gibson which has been on my TBR for a very long time. Now it happens to fill a square in a challenge I need to complete this month.

message 467: by Steven (new)

Steven (gallifreyan1218) | 5272 comments I've not had much time to read this past weekend, and I've had a migraine since yesterday. I'm going to *attempt* to get some reading done, but I don't see me making too much progress today or tomorrow. :(

But We got our advantage for the read-a-thon, and we can catch up if we all keep reading. I'll be doubling up as soon as this headache is gone.

message 468: by Lisa Kay (new)

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments Ugh. Sorry about the migraine, Steven.

message 469: by Steven (new)

Steven (gallifreyan1218) | 5272 comments I hate them, with a passion. :(

message 470: by Steven (new)

Steven (gallifreyan1218) | 5272 comments Haha, that would totally make my headache better.

I'll have to settle for my grown up pup and my kitty... but that's not really settling :)

Thanks for the get-wells. :D

message 471: by Lisa Kay (new)

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments Look at those sweet little bellies!

message 472: by Barb (new)

Barb Thankfully, I'm not a migraine sufferer, but my daughter is, so I know how devastating they can be. Hope you're feeling better soon, Steven.

@Evana, please let me know what you think of Neuromancer. I've heard a lot of good things about it, but I'm not a big fan of dystopia or steampunk, so I'm a bit hesitant to give it a shot.

message 473: by Sheila (new)

Sheila (sheilalynn) | 206 comments Hi people! I finally finished finals! I am back and ready to read fun, fiction. What do I need to know about this challenge? What are we doing right now. Someone catch me up.

message 474: by Steven (new)

Steven (gallifreyan1218) | 5272 comments We just finished a readathon, which we tied for the win!

Right now we just need to read read read and try to catch up. We're a good deal behind on the main challenge.

Check out the spreadsheet (link near the beginning of this thread) to see where we stand as of yesterday.

message 475: by Barb (new)

Barb I'm thinking about the possibility of a mini-challenge or read-a-thon for our team, but probably not till the beginning of June -- unless someone else wants to take over and run it :)

Son has finally gotten his leave approved before he and his wife head off to Okinawa for three years, so I won't be reading much (and probably not online much) from May 25 till June 4. That's not as long as they'd hoped to be home, but it's better than nothing!

message 476: by Steven (new)

Steven (gallifreyan1218) | 5272 comments I'm so glad you'll get some time! Maybe you can go visit in Okinawa? I'd love to see Japan!!!!

message 477: by Steven (new)

Steven (gallifreyan1218) | 5272 comments And I can help or run a challenge. :)

Barb Steven wrote: "I'm so glad you'll get some time! Maybe you can go visit in Okinawa? I'd love to see Japan!!!!"

We're hoping to :) Hubby said we need to save our pennies; I told him it's going to take more than pennies LOL

message 479: by Steven (new)

Steven (gallifreyan1218) | 5272 comments Haha, yeah, well, it'll be well worth it!!!

message 480: by Jane (new)

Jane | 705 comments I am hopeless when it comes to reading challenges. I have joined another one which lasts this week.
Bout of Books RaT My goal for this week is to read 4 books, I am actually hoping for 5 but my official goal is 4.

I have already finished 2 of these. Just Doll by Janice Daugharty and The Lightning Thief (Percy Jackson and the Olympians, #1) by Rick Riordan

message 481: by Steven (new)

Steven (gallifreyan1218) | 5272 comments Nice work Jane!

Barb, Evana, and I will figure out this mini-challenge and post details asap!

message 482: by Steven (new)

Steven (gallifreyan1218) | 5272 comments Okay everyone! We have a new READING MINI-CHALLENGE! It's going to be a little bigger than normal, so it has it's own thread to minimize update posts getting lost in discussions.

Go here to sign up: Books by the Numbers Challenge!

message 486: by Karla (new)

Karla What happened to the picture of the door in the first post? Or is it just my computer that isn't showing it anymore?

message 487: by Barb (new)

Barb It's still showing for me, Karla.

message 488: by Karla (new)

Karla Thanks, Barb.
Then it is just my computer not showing it. That is so weird!

Sallie(GeorgiaGirl) (shuga) | 775 comments Hi everyone - I finished 2 more books: Succubus Shadows by richelle mead 281 pages & The Betrayal of the Blood Lily by lauren willig 401 pages.....

Hope everyone had a great week - Im glad tomorrow is Friday!!!

message 490: by Steven (new)

Steven (gallifreyan1218) | 5272 comments YAY SALLIE! :)

Did you check out our new mini-challenge that starts Saturday and has a PRIZE? :D

Books by the Number Challenge

message 491: by Barb (new)

Barb Go Sallie, go :) I've finished a couple more this week, too - - then spent several hours this evening trying to figure out which series books I'll be "allowed" to read without breaking the Double Dare challenge. I think I could have read half a book in the time I spent on that LOL

message 492: by Steven (new)

Steven (gallifreyan1218) | 5272 comments I have no doubt you will find some Barb... There's a reason I call you the challenge queen!

message 493: by Barb (new)

Barb I probably shouldn't admit this, but I found series books #1 through 14 that I can read without messing up either my own personal read-in-order requirement *or my Double Dare challenge LOL I know I won't read all of those during our challenge, but it's nice to know it's possible if I do nothing but read the whole time :)

message 494: by Diane L (last edited May 16, 2013 07:25PM) (new)

Diane L Finished Neuromancer (Sprawl, #1) by William Gibson Neuromancer by William Gibson with 278 pages. This book started the cyberpunk sub-genre in sci-fi. It won the sci-fi Triple Crown back in 1984 carrying off the Hugo, Nebula and Philip K. Dick Awards. It is futuristic on our earth. I can see it being classed as dystopia because life is not as we know it.

The world is ruled more by corporations than governments. Normal suburban life appears to have disappeared and people rent 'coffins' to live in - small stacked cubicles big enough for a bed and a couple of personal items. Cyber implants in people are normal though pricy. Case is a computer geek who plugs in with a deck and trodes (short for electrodes, I think) which he uses for cybercrime and hacking. After double-crossing an employer his ability to run the net is burned out and he struggles to survive. Then he gets an offer from a mysterious man who says he can be cured in exchange for a very dangerous run.

The lingo takes some getting used to and sometimes I had to re-read parts to be sure if they were supposed to be real or if he was plugged in and seeing some sort of CGI. If you know anyone who roleplays with Shadowrun, you will know this world.

Working on my last Arabian Nights volume before we start our new challenge on Saturday.

Steven (gallifreyan1218) | 5272 comments Sound like an interesting book. I'll have to check it out! :)

message 496: by Sheila (new)

Sheila (sheilalynn) | 206 comments Just finished a book! slowly, but surely I am getting back in the swing of reading. You Know When the Men Are Gone by Siobhan Fallon . I listened to this on audio tape and I think I probably would have liked it better in book form. The stories were compelling, but I did not like the narrator a lot. The narrator wasn't horrible, just not very engaging.

But the stories themselves are about military families and deployment. It really puts a human face on what sacrifices we ask of our military personnel and how that affects individuals.

message 497: by Karla (new)

Karla Just finished Broken Moon by Kim Antieau it was really good!

message 498: by Barb (new)

Barb Sheila wrote: "Just finished a book! slowly, but surely I am getting back in the swing of reading. You Know When the Men Are Gone by Siobhan Fallon."

That's been on my TBR list for awhile, but I've never gotten around to reading it. But, I say that about a lot of books LOL If only I could read as fast as I add books to my list!

I know!!! I will probably never read all the books I want to read. There are just too many books in the world!

message 500: by Steven (new)

Steven (gallifreyan1218) | 5272 comments But they all sound good, so I add them *sigh*

If only I could get paid to read all day!
