Simon Watts I feel like Dune is something which really requires you to get into the world, as opposed to the characters. Something about the characters in Dune always fell flat for me, but I always loved reading about water retention and the worms. The worms are awesome.

Markus The first time I read Dune I loved everything about it, but I can hardly remember anything of what I read. The second time, though... let's wait and see.

Alexa Great review! But I still think the first part was boring as hell. :)

Thanks! And I must unfortunately agree with you. I think the reason why I enjoyed it this much the second time was that I was able to focus more on the awesome writing and the intricate details than the story itself :)

David Sven Great review Markus!

Thanks, David! I see your opinion about the book is quite similar to mine, based on the number of stars :)

David Sven I've read this a few times over the years - never seems to get old. Played the computer game too - Dune 2000

I agree. I've never actually experienced anything Dune-related besides reading, though. Never watched any of the movies or TV shows, and never played the game. I guess they never appealed to me that much.

Heena Rathore Rathore-Pardeshi Great review! I guess I'll be reading it pretty soon :)

Thanks! I cannot guarantee you will enjoy it as much as I did (though I hope so), but I would still recommend it to everyone :)

Carmen Nice review, Markus. I especially liked your status update about inept chess players! It made me laugh.

message 12: by Conor (new)

Conor Awesome review bro. I definitely have to check this one out sometime.

Thanks, Carmen! It made me laugh quite a bit while reading it as well :)

Thanks, bro! You absolutely have to do that. Though I must warn you that when reading this, you'll get to know the group that inspired the Aes Sedai :D

Kendra Dune has become a major favorite. I actually did better on the 2nd time I read the series, because I started with all of the prequels. Knocked the whole series out as he finished the very last book. Flipping awesome! And it all made sense. The first time I'd read Dune through Chapterhouse and was left confused.

The first time I read it I actually stopped after God Emperor, but this time I intend to go all the way :)

Kendra Brian Herbert and Kevin Anderson take a lot of flack for the prequels and sequels, but everything finally made sense with the machines, and then the whole Messiah storyline. It's one of the few series I intentionally went hardback with, along with WoT

Sounds awesome. The 'Prelude to Dune' series seems particularly interesting. I shall have to check out all of them when we're done reading the main series!

That there's a real life sandworm, only it lives in the ocean, and is about 4ft long. They're called Bobbit Worms and they're horrible.

Wow, it even looks strikingly similar. I'm done swimming in the ocean now...

You need to do that! There are few books I've enjoyed more than Dune, but I suppose it provides a different experience for each reader :)

Thanks! And that's of course no problem at all :) I'm ready whenever you are, but between the Silver Spike and the Hero of Ages, I have enough to keep me occupied at the moment. We can start today if you want to, and read slowly? Or wait a few days?

Your very own sandworm to ride!

Shii Yay! I'll wait for it in the mail soon!! Hope it's house trained!

message 32: by Richard (new)

Richard Guion I have the same feelings as you do for Dune, Markus! While I liked reading comics as a kid, Hardy Boys, Tom Swift Jr, Doc Savage, etc, reading Dune at the age of 13 years old made me into a science fiction reading junkie. From the first chapter, where Paul undergoes that Bene Gesserit test which seems to melt the flesh of his hand, I was hooked.

Awesome! Ooh, the Hardy Boys series brings forth memories. I never became a sci-fi junkie in the way of fantasy, but it certainly has been one of the most life-changing books I have ever read :)

message 34: by Robin (new)

Robin I'm thinking about starting this, but I'm a little nervous about the scale of the books, correctly if I'm wrong but the paperbacks run to something like 600 pages on average? Also, if I was to start delving into the series, what order should I read them in? As I know there are prequels so should I read those first?

message 35: by Richard (new)

Richard Guion No absolutely do not read the prequels first! Read the original Dune book then Dune Messiah & then Children of Dune. You can really stop there but if you want to keep reading go in order of publication.

message 36: by Markus (new)

Markus Richard is right, Robin. I tell everyone thinking about starting this series to read all the originals first. Do not read the prequels until you've finished the six books written by Frank Herbert.

message 37: by Kendra (new)

Kendra When I first read the Dune books, the originals (4,5,6) confused the heck out of me. I enjoyed the series FAR more after starting the prequels. By then they had also gotten the sequels out, and I flew through the group and have since gone back and filled in as they've finished. Wish they'd finish the third Guild book.

message 38: by Robin (new)

Robin Thanks for the feedback guys.

message 39: by Lennie (new)

Lennie Wynker I have the same feeling about Dune. I read it about 4 years ago. Since then, I've loads of other book but none surpass it. Dune embodies the word EPIC imo, lol
