These are the details I remember: 1) It was about a girl who I think was supposed to be 17, I'm pretty sure she had red curly hair, and it was a sign that her mother was from some other culture and she was shunned. 2) It was some fantasy world but not necessarily magic; kind of like an alternate reality with a medieval Scotland feel. It was a thick book, maybe 500 pages? And the cover was kind of foggy beige. One-word title I think. At the end of every chapter, there's a song/poem. 3) She lived with her dad and he was a really serious guy. 4) She was very close to an older woman who taught her other languages and songs. 5) She falls in love with a man from a legendary island; at one point they go back to the island and she meets his father who is the chief; she finds out he lost his sealskin, which is pretty important. The next details are more foggy so I'm not sure: 6) She has a brother and his wife is pregnant. 7) There's someone who travels around the world collecting songs. Might be the guy she falls in love with.
