umm it sounds like it's about selkies, who are shapeshifting seals/humans that need their sealskin to change back into a seal.

Thanks, Beth! I tried searching with that keyword, but I'm not sure that's what the author called it, and also it wasn't the main theme. But you pointed me in the right direction, and I found some other books I'd like to read ^_^
