I know you were looking for a fantasy novel which this is not it's realistic fiction. (sorry I don't read fantasy , I'm a dystopia girl) However it has a strong female protagonist and is a great book good love story as well. Also they both don't lose their personalities when they fall in love.
Also I know you weren't looking for sci fi but if you like dystopias (future societies that have failed) Try Divergent by Veronica Roth you may find that good as well. Hope this helps

I don't really know how to describe the world of this book. It's close to our world I think and takes place in what's probably the current day, but the entire book is set on a small, remote island that holds races of man-eating water-horses. This book is like a fairy tale or a myth or dream. The writing is so, so beautiful.
The last unicorn sets out on a quest to find the rest of her kind. She's a wonderful heroine, and you meet another along the way, Molly Gru.
The world reminds me vaguely of ancient England. There aren't any werewolves or vampires, but there are unicorns and harpies and wizards.
There's a bit of a romantic bent; you'll see it in the second half of the book. But there's a bit of a sadness to it, because she is, aft ...more "

This exists somewhere on the weird crossroads between fantasy and science fiction. I wouldn't call it fantasy, but I wouldn't call it science fiction either. Steampunk is probably the best word for it.
The world is an alternate version of World War I, complete with flying whales as airships. It probably isn't exactly what you're looking for (who goes looking for flying whales?), but you may want to read some reviews anyway. ...more "
