I am a self published author who has written over eight books and over 50 poems I write pretty much anything from fiction to nonfiction..writing is therapeutic..it starts from an idea then it grows into something more..a poem,short story or a novel..Writing allows me to escape into the character head in the story. As a reader, I am very picky and my rating is very harsh but rest assured I am twice as harsh on my own writing. As far as preferences when it comes to books. I read mainly Fiction books, that range from Drama, Mystery, Romance,etc. Non Fiction books will include anything from historical figures or modern day people.
What do I look for in a book? characterization, consistency and a solid ending.. I It depends on the type of novel though, but these three elements are generally what I look for. However, if I detest the writing style then the book automatically gets a one star regardless of what I initially look for.
