I know you mentioned you want to stay from shoujo but if you ever want to see it done right, then this is the title for you. It is high fantasy of the Asian sort and stars a very strong female lead whose growth is ultimately what makes Akatsuki so wonderful. None of the clichés of the genre hamper this manga.
