I was born in 1989. My high school history class seemed to stop around WWII, and didn't go into anything that took place after that. I basically have virtually no knowledge of anything that happened in the last 70 years or so. It's extremely frustrating and annoying, and I have no idea where to start learning about it. There are plenty of books that cover very specific topics, but... I don't even know the broad basics. (Someone recently was trying to explain to me what the Velvet Revolution in Prague was, and I didn't have the heart to tell them I don't even know why East and West Germany couldn't meet, or why there was a wall, or... any of it.)
Imagine you are talking to someone who knows nothing from 1920-2000. Like they were in a coma or something. What book would you give them so they could understand recent history?
I want to learn and understand but I have absolutely no idea where to begin. Please help! :(...more

I tend to be overly snarky and make fun of everything, even books I LOVE. I'm also really, really hard on books sometimes. Or maybe a lot of the time.
A lot of these reviews were written in my early 20s when I thought my opinion was the only one that mattered in the world and also when I lacked any sense of nuance, tact, or common decency. Lol. I would like to apologize formally on past-me's behalf....more
