“You’re cooking?”
The vampire turned from the stove, a wooden spoon in one hand and a knowing smirk on his lips. “What gave it away? The heavenly aroma or the rare sight of me standing near a burner?”
“It’s been a while since I’ve seen you cook. I’m flattered,” Addison said, leaning against the doorframe, his arms crossed. “What’s going on?”
Kenji stirred the pot casually, tasting the broth. “Don’t be. It’s not for you, this time. Although I could save you a serving for your trouble.” Smiling, he turned to stir into the pot. “Our neighbor is sick. I’m making her chicken soup.”
Addison blinked. “Should I be worried?”
Kenji raised an eyebrow. “What, jealous? I sometimes cook for you, too.”
Addison snorted. “And I appreciate it every time. I’m not jealous, but it feels suspicious. Why her?”
Kenji shrugged, returning his attention to the pot. “She’s brave. I like bravery. It’s a rare and appealing trait. And she has a good heart. I’m simply being a good neighbor.”
Addison’s smirk deepened, his tone teasing. “Sure. Nothing to do with her being pretty, then?”
“I wouldn’t know,” Kenji said honestly. “I’ve never seen her. But brave? That’s far more appealing to me than looks.”
