Goodreads asked Renee Darcy:

What’s the best thing about being a writer?

Renee Darcy For me, the best thing about being a writer is getting to be involved in these wonderful stories. As I write, these interesting characters begin to emerge, and the story doesn't always go in the direction that I intend. In some ways, I sort of get swept up and carried away - the same way a reader does - in what the characters say and do and where the story wants to go.

I can't count the times I've gotten up from a writing session, gone to chat with my husband, and started with: "Wow, my character just did something really unexpected" or "my character just said something totally outrageous."

As writers, these stories come from inside of us. For me, though, somehow between my brain and the page, the stories take on a life of their own and become these living, breathing things. Entire worlds populated with interesting characters. Even when I sit down with a plan, and think: "I'm going to work on X" or "I'm going to write this scene between these characters" - I'm often surprised by what comes out of that.

That process of discovery is my favorite thing about being a writer. The fact that I can sit down in front of a keyboard and something completely unexpected might happen, and I'll get transported to this wonderful place full of these interesting people. I get fully invested and insatiably curious, and I have to finish writing the story just to find out what's going to happen!
