From the Edgar Rice Burroughs novels, Tarzan and his beloved Jane. For a romance in a series of "pulp" novels, their relationship is pretty amazing - filled with devotion, even at the cost of their own happiness (see the first 2 books in the series). The way ERB brings the characters together, then separates them and virtually crushes their hopes of being united again, is real classic writing. Plus, I like old-fashioned heroes with senses of honour and right & wrong.
