Goodreads asked Micheal E. Jimerson:

Who is your favorite fictional couple, and why?

Micheal E. Jimerson Huey Calloway and Spring Renfro from Kelton's Good old Boys or Monte Walsh and Hattie from Jack Schaffer's Monte Walsh. That sacrificial love is somehow more powerful, certainly more irony filled, as opposed to happy ever after love. Spring and Hattie won't change Huey and Monte, among other reasons it would destroy the very qualities they find so attractive. Huey and Monte would willingly sacrifice the lifestyles that define them for these women but they are neither asked nor volunteer. Rather they are already truly in love with an equally romantic way of life, being cowboys. Gus and Clara are similar and arguably better written in Lonesome Dove but not to the full extent of exploring the sacrifice by both characters. The purest example of this tragic love is Calloway and Renfro.
