There are many great fictional couples, but most prominent to me are Elizabeth Bennett and Mr. D'Arcy from Pride and Prejudice. I love how Elizabeth can hold her own against social conventions and inadvertently earn D'Arcy's respect and love by being an independent thinker instead of what conventional society expects. They are equally matched.
