Rebel Miller
Great question. One you would think I'd have a ready answer, but alas, I don't! LOL. The reason is my reply kinda depends on where my head is at. I certainly have a type of couple I'm drawn to. It's usually one where there are two defiant and strong characters whose one (or primary) vulnerability is their love for the other. I love the conflict that brings to the characters in terms of how they discover aspects about themselves - namely how to manage their inability to control/dominate things like they always do and how they learn that to be in love means giving up that control, to some extent.
I suppose, bearing that answer in mind, the couples of today that I love are the 'Anastasias and Christian Greys' of fiction romance, but I have a deeper appreciation for couples like those written by authors like Roni Loren and Sylvia Day.
I have other favourite fictional couples, but I warn you, they tend to be a little twisted!
For example, I did my undergraduate degree in Spanish, so I studied a lot of Spanish language literature and there was a psychological novel called El Túnel that, to this day, I absolutely love. (I still have a university copy of the novel on my shelf, in fact). I won't ruin the ending for you, but it was bad. *cringe* However, leading up to the end, I was fascinated by the male protagonist's love/infatuation for the object of his affection. I guess in that case it wasn't so much the 'love' the male character had for the female character, but the journey he went through - how tormented and changed he became - all in the name of his 'love' for the woman.
What can I say? I like my couples messed up, vulnerable and defiantly strong. LOL
