Samuel
Samuel asked Matthew Quirk:

Dear Mr Quirk. I've just started reading CBZ and love it I'm up to chapter 17 now and I have a general question. What would you say was the inspiration of the story for Cold Barrel Zero and the genesis of the enigmatic operator John Hayes?

Matthew Quirk Hi Samuel. Thanks for reading! I got to know some people in the special operations community and was fascinated by their training (especially BUD/S and SEAL Qualification) and awed by their selflessness. That led me to think of what sort of scenario would have them using those skills stateside, which brought me to John Hayes, and his US homecoming.

Hayes's character came about from wanting to see how and whether a protagonist could hold onto what he believes in the face of insurmountable odds, a real crucible. Also, most people I know who do this kind of work are unassuming about it, and I was drawn to a deeds-not-words hero.
