Dan asked:

I am shocked that there are so many negative reviews. This is one of the greatest satires ever written, in a league by itself. Confederacy, and crime and punishment are my favorite novels. I read confederacy every 3-4 years and am continually astounded by the brilliance of this book. My circle of 10 literary friends place this book at the top of the list. Why are there so many negative reviews?

Mebalzahari different question. Why are movies such as Twilight and Hunger Games tops at the box office?

People are effin stupid.
Ryan That floors me as well. One respondent on another question here, answered that she disliked the book because Toole was not very sympathetic towards his characters (or something like that), and she got several "likes".
Zane There seems to be somewhat of a gender divide. I wonder if some women tend to view male protagonists differently. They must find the character compelling or even attractive to be interested. Because it's a guy they find repugnant they fail to find the humor. Also, some guys who take themselves too seriously can't identify with a flawed character.
Dave Harmon There is no universal humor. what we find hilarious and brilliant is met with confusion or frowns from others. Theres also no universal literature. i hate Dostoyevsky and Shakespeare, but i love Tolstoy and Hemingway.
