Mary Ellen asked:

Is this book appropriate for middle schoolers?

Sydney This book can be educational for middle schoolers ,but it tells the story in a dark and emotional way. To warn you, this book contain triggering topics like suicide and public execution. I think it depends if you or ,if you're a teacher, class is mature enough to handle topics like that. (Sorry the late response.)
Felix Childress In my personal opinion (and no hate to you), if children during the Holocaust were seen as old enough to be the perpetrators of heinous crimes against humanity and were therefore worthy of death, torture, and experimentation, then children today are old enough to learn of the things that the Nazis did in their entirety. Sugarcoating what really happened during the Holocaust to make it "child-friendly" is simply dishonest. Yes, it's a heavy, sobering book that requires a lot of maturity. But so is every single other book worth reading about the Holocaust.
Julia While I can see it being an excellent introduction to the subject matter, note that is does not shy away from the horrors of the holocaust and the trauma is made much more personal by being able to so easily identify with the characters. (the more simple a character design, the more we project ourselves and see ourselves in that character) I do believe that 12-13 is probably the appropriate time to teach them about the atrocities that humans are capable of. Be prepared to have a full discussions and be an anchor as they try to make sense of these historical events.
Trilby O'Farrell I read it in middle school (I think I was 12 or 13, maybe younger). Although it was disturbing, I found it fascinating and I remember it to this day. I think it's actually meant to be read by anyone, including older children.
Vyyuk I am personally a middle school student tand I find that my teacher has given us the worst book she could it is not age appropriate and you should find another book.
