Kathryn Bashaar
Kathryn Bashaar asked Kate Quinn:

How do you research ancient history when you write? My novel takes place in the 4th century and although I enjoyed the research process, it was really hard to find material. Do you have any tips and techniques that you can share?

Kate Quinn Ancient history has a lot of gaps, and this is both a curse and a blessing. A curse because you have less to work with, research wise, but a blessing because where you have gaps, you have license to fill them with your imagination! My rule is simply to fill gaps in history with whatever events will be historically plausible AND also serve my story the best--and to own up to it in the author note that X didn't happen, but we don't know what did because the records did not survive to tell us. Good luck with your research!
