Terri asked Bryn Greenwood:

Hello, Interestingly, I found many parallels between All the Ugly and Wonderful Things and one my favorite classics, Jane Eyre - was that intentional or simply serendipitous?

Bryn Greenwood It's been about thirty years since I read Jane Eyre, but I suspect any similarities between the two are more likely owing to the fact that they're both Bildungsroman, or coming-of-age stories. I think one of the things that make such stories so enduring is that we all go through certain rites of passage and developmental stages, so we readily connect to reading about others' experiences, even when they're drastically different from our own.
