No, she's not based on a real person - but I wanted to bring to the page a character that embodied the spirit and experience of her generation of women. They were an extraordinary generation of women - the first in modern times to go to war in great numbers, not only close to battle, but on the home front. Arguably they were the true heroes of the Great War.

MAISIE DOBBS was the first novel I had read which gave me a clear insight into the struggles of the British during WWI -- the rationing, deprivations, fears for the men (and women) engaged in the war -- on a very personal level. Here in the US, we were isolated from the war, but for the last year, and while great loss was incurred, I don't think it matched the losses of England. What were your sources?

I truly love your books, both the Maisie Dobbs series and the stand alone, Care and Management of Lies, but I echo another questioner when I ask-why so much sadness and loss? Do you feel that it is more realistic, more true to life that everyone loses everyone they love? Will there ever be a happily ever after?
