Sonia asked Deborah Harkness:

I started reading A Discovery of Witches because of a friend's recommendation. I was intrigued by the comment she made about the strength and intelligence of your female characters. How was this a focus of your's? It came across so naturally, and I've found so few books with genuinely whole characters.

Deborah Harkness Thank you! I take my characters very seriously--and they are very real to me, so I'm always glad when my readers feel the same way. I wanted to write the kinds of characters who could be models for my own female students. My female students often have enormous power and talent, but they are sometimes afraid of their own strengths. I wanted to show them all the different ways a woman could be powerful, smart, and strong--without being perfect.
