Lately, I've been thinking about the ideas I get for writing. Instead of writing for fun, I've been trying to find a story idea that is fandom and movie-worthy, and any ideas that aren't like that I turn away. When you first started writing, did you write for fun, and then work on really perfecting and polishing your works? And once a story, even a short one, is written, you can always go back and change it, right?
Gail Carson Levine
For me, writing has always been a mixture of fun, hard work, and struggle, and I still do a lot of polishing. Perfection is beyond me. Until a story is close to publication, yes, you can keep revising. When I'm considering ideas, I look for ones that spark more ideas. Fandom and movies don't come into it.

I just wanted to thank you for your writing style and books as I must have re-read "The Two Princesses of Bamarre" several times. The two princesses and their very different personalities reminds me of my older sister and me. It helped me cope when she moved out to college, then out of state, and eventually out of the country. It was a great companion during those times :). From a lifelong fan, Katie Corder

I have loved your books ever since I was a little girl. I grew up with Ella Enchanted, but I love The Two Princesses of Bamarre and Ever the best. Question, how do you get the idea for The Two Princesses of Bamarre and Ever? I figured Ella Enchanted is a different version of Cinderella and Fairest is a different version of Snow White. I could never figure out The Two Princesses of Bamarre or Ever, though.
