Why was the Guide written in English? There is no mention of a Babel fish equivalent that translates written text. Also, how did Ford Prefect come to know that the Earth was going to be demolished?

As for Ford Prefect's prior knowledge, the plans to demolish the Earth had been at Alpha Centauri for 50 years. Prefect had only been trapped on it for 15 years if I remember that all correctly.
