My first McCullough book was Truman. I listened to the audio and then read the book. It was wonderful. I love history and McCullough makes the past come alive!

I suggest the Johnstown Flood. Not too long a book, and you will get his writing flavor and decide whether you like it or not. Second choice is a recent book, Wright Brothers, for the same reason.
I don't do audio, so cannot comment there.

I would suggest A greater Journey and the Wright Brothers. John Adams and Truman are very long and could discourage you. The Johnstown Flood is a history of a one day event, it could get redundant.

1776 is great and the audio book is read by David McCullough.

Depends on what you like to read. McCullough does a lot of research and his writing is very detailed. As a pilot, "Wright Brothers" was a great read and it's one of his shorter books. "1776" is a wonderful historical read and "John Adams" told me some very interesting things about our 2nd President. McCullough won Pulitzer's for "Truman" and "John Adams", you'll enjoy any of his books.

I'm currently reading along with the audio book

1776 or John Adams, and yes: the audiobook

So far I only read his book on "The Wright Brothers". I'd given it as a Christmas present to people either in the engineering or aviation field. McCullough did a great job with this biography which includes details about the brothers' trips to Europe and interviews with a few of the Wright Brothers' descendants.

McCullough is a very good writer!! Love his books!

The Path Between the Seas is Excellent. But I agree the Johnstown Flood is not to big of a task to tackle.

I have listened to John Adams, which was read by a great narrator. Other books are read by the author, which is harder to get through because his voice isn't for everyone. My teens found it too slow to listen to him.
I would agree: Hometown Johnstown Flood is a great starting book. I read the physical book. For audio, I've listened to the Wright Brothers and the Americans in Paris (can't remember if that's the full name). I personally enjoyed the way he wove together the Paris book, being a huge fan of political and art history.

Skip this one and read Sedgwick's "Hamilton/Burr Duel". McCullough totally misses the boat here. Now that we know Hamilton's story, most American history books are gone....gone with the wind.

My local library suggested two books as an introduction to McCullough. The Johnstown Flood was one of them (still on my TBR), and the other was The Great Bridge, about the building of the Brooklyn Bridge. I chose the second, and though it was a challenge at times to get through the back-room politics and engineering, I loved it.
